Football free Sunday

Just curious...if anyone isn't watching England play on Sunday are you planning to do something else instead?

I couldn't give a flying flipadoodle about it so thinking film and a take away. DH will be out at the pub watching it so have the remote and Deliveroo app to myself.

Football is rarely on at 8pm on a Sunday night so just do whatever you'd ordinarily do. I hear there's streaming platforms available these days and everything.

Yes but the OP needs people to know just how uninterested she is in football...

Londonrach1 · 13/07/2024 07:54

I don't care about football but this is england so I'll watch it...

Yes, I wouldn't normally watch sport but I'll
watch this one as it's a big game. I do think I'm a curse though: I only ever watch sport when it's important and when I do my side tends to lose.

MayonnaiseOnMyChips · 13/07/2024 09:52

Oooh hummus and pizza is a good shout.
Might swerve the take away idea and do myself a little picnic infront of a film.

I absolutely do.
More excited about the prospect of having the house to myself to be quite honest.

You know this thread is called football free Sunday which sort of implies that it’s a place where people who don’t want to watch football and are sick of having it rammed down their throats can talk about what they’re going to do?

MayonnaiseOnMyChips · 13/07/2024 09:54

Ineedaholidayagain · 13/07/2024 08:21

I'm halfway through a good book so will be curled up in bed reading, DH and DS will be watching in the lounge so I'll use the general sound level to guess how it's going.

Which book? Enjoy!

Long bath may feature in my plans too.
Not sure if the cinema will be showing films at that time- our nearest cinema is showing the match on the big screen 🤯

Our local cinema is also showing the game on the biggest screen, but unless it's a single screen cinema they will have other options showing.

History???? It’s a football game 😂

And??? What qualifies as an historical event then?
Not saying it means anyone should watch it btw. Just responding to the poster who claimed not to understand why a non football fan would choose to watch this game

AmelieTaylor · 13/07/2024 09:55

FunIsland · 13/07/2024 08:03

I usually go to the cinema but maybe it won’t be open. If it’s not I’ll go for a long walk or run. Or have a long bath. Or watch paint dry 😉

@FunIsland

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes! Just checked the listings out of curiosity and other films being shown as normal 😁

Friend coming round for wine and a chat. Organised before football.

You know that posting on a public forum is going to attract responses from people who may have an opposing view? A bit like your response to mine? It's called discussion.

LilBowWow · 13/07/2024 09:59

Just do what you’d normally do when there’s something on tv you don’t want to watch. Must’ve happened before.

AmelieTaylor · 13/07/2024 10:00

BogRollBOGOF · 13/07/2024 08:00

I'm aware that there's a big match.
Don't know what time.
My policy of not watching has served England well so far so do I attempt to witness history, watch it and jinx it, or quietly ignore to improve their odds Grin

I have a history of triggering devestating penalty shootouts when I show too much interest.

@BogRollBOGOF

please quietly ignore!

if it was just a penalty shoot out, I'd be quietly confident, it's the initial 90 odd minutes that's filling me with 'fear'. My hope is that we get through that without it being a humiliating defeat. Not very positive I know, but Spain have been playing really really well.

HelpMeGetThrough · 13/07/2024 10:00

Because it might be a chance to witness history being made?

Hardly, it's a few overpaid people kicking a ball around.

They'll get shafted anyway.

You might as well go onto a post asking ‘what are you growing in your garden this year?’ and accuse the OP of only posting because they want everyone to know they have a garden. It’s just a bizarre thing to do.

If you don’t want a football free Sunday that’s your choice, just as it’s other people’s choice to have one.

So 1966 world cup win isn't a significant part of English history?
I suspect people who don't understand why there will be an increase in interest in this one particular game from people with absolutely no interest usually don't understand a lot of things to be honest

AmelieTaylor · 13/07/2024 10:13

Rafting2022 · 13/07/2024 08:22

Going out with my hiking club as usual. Will probably get home around 9pm.

Just in time for the second half then!

Historical event - something important in the world, something that signifies a change in the world, a significant event, not over-paid idiots kicking a ball round a field.

Dontcallmescarface · 13/07/2024 10:13

So 1966 world cup win isn't a significant part of English history?

Hate to break it to you but this isn't the world cup. So no, winning the European cup isn't a "significant part of English history". I guess people who don't understand the difference between the two, don't understand a lot of things to be honest.

@Dontcallmescarface
Well put, and totally sums up the mentality of those who think winning the Euros is a historical event.

AmelieTaylor · 13/07/2024 10:24

MrsStottlemeyer · 13/07/2024 09:47

I'll be about an hour into a four hour journey home with DH and two DC They are huge football fans but are not England fans so will be willing England to lose.
I will hopefully find a good book to listen to because football on the car radio unlocks an intense rage in me.

What a nasty attitude.

I am hoping England wins, but not wishing Spain loses, I just accept it as the consequence. I still hate to see how upset the losing team is.

I don't understand the hateful attitude to wish for a team or someone to lose

Yesitisnotthatitbe · 13/07/2024 10:32

As I seem to have stumbled in to pedants corner I better make it clear that I do indeed understand the difference between the world cup and European championship. Having watched every tournament starting with the 1982 world cup I think I've about grasped that concept 🙄
As the phrase 'history' seems to have triggered one or two, may I suggest that there are SOME non football people who want to enjoy watching the match with family/friends or just share (hopefully) a rare moment of national joy?
Obviously, they are all really shallow for watching 'overpaid idiots' kick a ball around.
God, this place sometimes!!

For me it's far more interesting than say a royal wedding, funeral, jubilee, coronation, or whatever. These happen pretty much every year and take over everything for days.
On the day of the queen's funeral we thought we would make the most of it and go to our favourite walking place, sadly we were not the only ones who are not in the least bit interested and it was rammed.

HelpMeGetThrough · 13/07/2024 10:40

Only for people who have an interest in football.
