Is your school allowing children to come in late on Monday because of the football?

I've had an email today saying that primary dc can go in late on Monday if they are staying up to watch the football on Sunday night. They are usually really strict on punctuality and how much they miss by being just 5 minutes late but they have said that being 90 minutes late won't cause them to miss any lesson time!
I recall this for something last year too.
Is your school doing this? Is your child sleeping in on Monday morning after the late night watching football?
I'm not into football at all so I might be biased against this.
Aibu to think that schools shouldn't adjust the school day timings to allow for late nights to watch sport?

My kids school is the same. We aren't into football though, and we'll have to work so DD will be dropped at breakfast club the usual time!

I've seen on social media that our old primary is allowing a delayed start.

However youngest is now at secondary and they have sent out an email saying that students are required in at their usual start time.

No, they are not (primary).

Onyoupop · 12/07/2024 20:12

Not heard anything from ours about it so assume it's business as usual!

Allmarbleslost · 12/07/2024 20:12

How utterly ridiculous!

Crunchymum · 12/07/2024 20:12

Nope. Nothing of the sort from our school.

We'll have a few early nights tonight and tomorrow and all of next week - the older two will be fine (9yo and 11yo). Younger one has fallen asleep on the sofa by about 8.15pm whilst watching the other 8pm England games this tournament 😂

My work circulated an email yesterday offering annual leave for anyone that wishes to take it (global company so even if the whole UK booked AL it would be fine - lots of people won't be booking leave though, myself included!)

Merryoldgoat · 12/07/2024 20:12

No. In fact a message came out specifying they should be in as normal.

UpUpUpU · 12/07/2024 20:14

It’s just a load of overpaid blokes kicking a bag of wind around a field. Normal service will remain in this household

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/07/2024 20:14

Normal Monday here.

phoenixrosehere · 12/07/2024 20:14

No. Neither of my sons’ primary schools are doing this.

Would be surprised if they did.

LuckysDadsHat · 12/07/2024 20:14

Haven't heard anything from our school, but it's the last week of term where they do hardly any work anyway so I can't get het up about it if other schools choose to do it. Won't make a difference here as DD doesn't watch the football anyway so will be asleep.

nadine90 · 12/07/2024 20:15

I do find it a bit strange given how ott schools seem to be about attendance at the minute. Not a football fan though, and my kids are old enough that a slightly later bedtime won’t affect them much. I was glad to see my kids school are sticking to their normal day, I’d have felt a bit guilty dropping youngest at breakfast club while all his mates strolled in at 9.30 x

Fizzyjuice · 12/07/2024 20:15

My DS is in Y6 and he's already come home every day this week saying he's done no work and been on the iPads.

I don't think the school would be arsed if he didn't show up at all next week, nevermind rock up late on Monday.

HansSolo22 · 12/07/2024 20:16

Yes, we had an email at the end of the day saying children could come in up to 10am, but the school would be open from normal time. To be honest, it helps me but appreciate it’s not good for everyone. In the last week of school, they are winding down anyway. Is a bit double standards though when they are pretty strict on attendance.

ARichtGoodDram · 12/07/2024 20:16

They are all doing it here.

However, Ofsted are due soon for several of them so it’s as much about stats (better to have 50 arriving late than 35 absences on record) as anything else.

Lincoln24 · 12/07/2024 20:16

No word from the school but I'll probably send my child in late (she's early primary). This might only happen once in her lifetime!

Amberpants · 12/07/2024 20:17

Yes, my son is at primary school, they’ve said they can go in late (up to 10.30am). I’m not sure my son will stay up to watch it but I kind of want to let him go late because how’s it fair if some do and some don’t?!

Secondary yes, primary no.

MaureenYoureNoHelpBehindTheDoor · 12/07/2024 20:18

Yes, my primary school have said children can come in up until 10am.

Works well for me as my children will be staying up to watch!

Losing will happen all the time

Hellskitchen24 · 12/07/2024 20:19

I don’t have kids yet so perhaps my opinion isn’t valid, but I think that’s a really nice option for schools to give. It’s the last week of term so I’m assuming schools wind down a bit next week anyway? For the kids I mean, I’m sure it’s hell for the teachers.

Also, a huge number of school kids will be up late watching it. If it goes all the way it won’t finish until around 11pm.

It’s a major European final. It doesn’t happen often. And it’s an option from the sounds of it, not a necessity for you to send your kids in late.

user1984778379202 · 12/07/2024 20:20

Spare a thought for the teachers who still have to be at school at the usual time to register the kids who go to breakfast club and those want to come in at normal time. My footie-mad primary teacher OH is praying it doesn't go to extra time and penalties!

Billyandharry · 12/07/2024 20:22

Yes ds's high school going in 2 hours late! Crazy! On same day we get a letter from LA getting wrist slapped for 'only' 94% attendance!! Madness.

y0rkier0se · 12/07/2024 20:24

Yes, we are. The reason for this are that on days after major tournaments such as this, attendance drops massively as parents don’t want to bring them late and get into trouble, so they keep them off all day. By allowing them to come in until 10am, more children are likely to attend. Staff will be there as usual for morning drop offs at normal time, it’s the last week of term so they’re unlikely to miss substantial learning, just consolidation activities.
