Is your school allowing children to come in late on Monday because of the football?

I've had an email today saying that primary dc can go in late on Monday if they are staying up to watch the football on Sunday night. They are usually really strict on punctuality and how much they miss by being just 5 minutes late but they have said that being 90 minutes late won't cause them to miss any lesson time!
I recall this for something last year too.
Is your school doing this? Is your child sleeping in on Monday morning after the late night watching football?
I'm not into football at all so I might be biased against this.
Aibu to think that schools shouldn't adjust the school day timings to allow for late nights to watch sport?

Head sounds a bundle of fun.

She is an extraordinarily acquired taste. I'm 8 years in and have yet to acquire it.

She also dislikes chalk.

I mean, heaven forfend that teachers might have slightly easier hour at work eh? Those lazy arsed slackers!! 🙄

and all that “overpaid blokes chasing a pigs bladders” snores ville stuff. It’s the national sport. It means a lot to a lot of people, including kids. Really you can’t get behind a bit of potential joy?

This, what a weird way to describe the most popular sport in the world across the ages.
Like they would complain if they were good at sport and choosen to represent their country.
Like they'd turn down the wage either while they were at the top of their career.
It's hard not be jealous I suppose.

Knowing our school we will probably get a text at 815 on Monday.

It’s just a load of overpaid blokes kicking a bag of wind around a field. Normal service will remain in this household

Are you my dad?!! That's exactly what he says. I couldn't agree more!

ListenLinda · 12/07/2024 22:49

No. School said on their newsletter that doors open at usual time on Monday. If England win, that may change and a message may be sent out about a later start.
my work have said we can all start at 11am on Monday, so makes no odds to me either way if they do or dont.
our school was slammed on attendance in the recent Ofsted, so they are usually pretty strict with it, but its also last week of term and as others have said, coming in late is better than not coming in at all.

Theunamedcat · 12/07/2024 22:49

I have kids with autism/ADHD they think sleep is for wimps and weirdos ds2 went to school on less than two hours did a full day at school stayed awake until nearly midnight was up and active 6 hours later the school noticed he was sleepy after he had 6 hours when he had two he was his normal happy self

Absolutely.

No.

Our school (the one that I teach at and DD1 attends) is not doing a late offer because we attract a lot of working parents as the only village locally offering affordable wraparound. Headteacher feels it would feel unfair to chidlren who have to come in to breakfast club anyway due to parents’ work.

However, as a year 3 teacher I can confirm that my class were SHATTERED the day after the match this week. 28/31 of them stayed up to watch it, and they just bickered and grumbled all day.

Therefore, I have replanned my lessons for Monday to be easier on us all. However, we will still be learning! Children without structure lose the plot, so I always teach right up until the last day, even if it is ‘fun’ learning. I wonder if members of my class go home and say they did nothing all day in the last week of term?

BitOutOfPractice · 12/07/2024 23:22

Oh good god the happiness police are out in force tonight 🙄 I don’t like football so all joy is cancelled for those that do.

Ifhappylittlebluebirdsfly222 · 12/07/2024 23:23

No but my 7 year old son is more about staying up for the eurovision song contest, not that fussed about football so we'll probably send him to bed as usual anyway.

I love this comment! 😂

Teacher bashing is alive and well on this thread!

Perfectlystill · 12/07/2024 23:38

No. How ridiculous. Also don't parents have jobs to go to?

AliceMcK · 12/07/2024 23:41

I remember something in the past were this was allowed, but they have had a 9am leavers assembly and awards ceremony in the calendar for months so I can’t see it happening.

We are huge motorbike racing fans here. Don't think the HT would like me keeping ds off for a race though. Luckily the TT was in half term.

I've just told Dd about it and she thinks it's ridiculous. She's in year 10 and her school is not allowing students in later.

2 children in different schools here- 5 year old's school sent an email saying the gates WILL NOT be open until 10am:

10 year olds school is business as normal on Monday at 8. 30am.

Fun Monday for me using my lunch break for the school run at 9.30am for the youngest who WONT be staying up to watch it

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/07/2024 00:04

I got an email today to say my son's school will be open at 10.30 am. He's a year 8 student. I think it's great! We can have a fun evening without worrying about getting up too early.

Ioverslept · 13/07/2024 00:08

My child’s school is doing a normal start time citing safeguarding reasons. If schools are happy to allow kids to come in late, that’s fair enough but not actually opening before 10 is not on in my opinion, what about those with parents who do have to go to work early? Those needing breakfast clubs? Those who struggles with changes in routine or who won’t be having a lie in? They should all be able to go in at their usual time if they want to!

ClareBlue · 13/07/2024 01:09

Whatever it is, it's not a once in a lifetime experience. If you are over 4 it's the 2nd time already in your life.

Takemeback02 · 13/07/2024 01:22

This irrationally annoyed me 😅 we get moaned at for not booking medical ap out of school hours like we have control of it… marked as absent for morning period but football sure - free ride come in late 😅 the country is bonkers - the education system even more so !

Highelf · 13/07/2024 01:37

My sisters son was in hospital with pneumonia and missed out on an attendance reward while the rest of the class got treats, yet she was emailed to say they could go late for the football🤨

EnglishBluebell · 13/07/2024 02:11

Nope. Attendance is important to DD's school and rightly so.

Utterly ridiculous idea. What message is that sending kids? That it's ok to bend the rules for something as trivial as football, when we spend the rest of the year/s insisting that attendance is so important and that unless they're ill or have a damn good reason, then they're to take it seriously. That it's very important and being late/missing school has lasting effects on their education etc etc.

Oh but it's ok if it's for that one football match....

EnglishBluebell · 13/07/2024 02:17

Also it's likely to start a precedence.
"Oh well there was that event on tv last night, so DC are late."
"Those astronauts are launching on that new vehicle in America so the kids will be in late tomorrow"
"Please can we pick DC up early on Friday as that sports match will be starting on the telly at 2"

Eventually it becomes: "Sorry DC wasn't in until lunchtime, there was a new series on Netflix he wanted to finish"

VashtaNerada · 13/07/2024 03:33

I wouldn’t have thought for a second that any school would do this! I’ve never heard of anything like it. Definitely not happening at either of my DC’s schools or the school I work at.
