How do you separate laundry?

So.. need some honest opinions here. I posted a comment on a previous thread mentioning that washing tea towels together with knickers is gross IMO. Received quite a few comments telling me I'm uptight and bizarre. I honestly think that even if you wash them at 90 degrees, you still shouldn't mix tea towels and underwear. Am I in minority then thinking this? Genuinely curious.

How long does it take you to get a full load of knickers?

😂

Hopefully this thread will make people think twice next time they put a wash on!! I actually feel sick at the thought of peoples poo particles spinning round with their tea towels 🤢

Well, I wipe my arse so there isn’t generally poo on my knickers. If there happened to be for some reason the washing machine would wash it away, not just from my knickers but from everything else in there too. If you don’t think it does, you must think you are putting on knickers covered in poo all the time.

See below:
The average adult undergarment has about a tenth of a gram of fecal matter,” Dr. Charles Gerba, renowned germ researcher and professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, told CTVNews.ca by telephone earlier this month.
“By my estimations, a week’s worth of dirty underwearwould amount to about an airline peanut-sized amount of fecal matter.”
Gerba, an environmental microbiologist best known for his research in water quality, turned his attention to household laundry a decade ago thanks to a rise in energy-saving cold-water washing.
According to his research, Gerba says dirty underwear and jeans are among the worst offenders for collecting bacteria when it comes to our clothes.
But hand towels remain the number one culprit for containing fecal bacteria, with over 80 per cent testing positive.

Link won’t work but - tenth of a gram per pair leading to a peanut sized piece in a week? How?

Sherwil16 · 12/07/2024 21:54

I separate laundry totally by this colour scheme:
Whites
Black and grey
Blue and green
Pink and red
Yellow ( this pile takes a while to build up)
Other colours have to fit in somewhere
No separation by type

I chuck tea towels straight in the washing machine as they need washing and they get wasted with whatever load goes on next.

Apart from that I only tend to wash towels and bedding separately as they tend to take up a full load, nothing else gets separated at all. I tend to avoid white clothes in general anyway.

Exactly what I do. Anything white gets bunged in there aswell. All on 40 with bio gel , jobs a goodun 😁

CoastalCalm · 12/07/2024 21:56

Whites inc tea towels and very light greys (husband work polos) together on a hot wash

Everything else in on a 40

Handwash woolens as and when

Guavafish1 · 12/07/2024 21:57

colours
whites
darks
delicates

7 tenths of a gram would be roughly the weight of a peanut.

7 tenths of a gram would be roughly the weight of a peanut.

On that case the first figure is wrong. I definitely don’t have 1/7th of a peanut of crap in my knickers.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 12/07/2024 22:04

I do:

All towels on 60.
Colours on 40.
Whites/lights on 40.
Mixture of colours and lights on 30. Loads of clothes seem to be wash at 30 nowadays, which I hate as it doesn’t get stains out. Not sure if they have to be or just encouraging you to wash at a lower temp.
Bedding on 40 (used to be a 50 setting on our old machine). Sometimes goes in with clothes if need to make up a load.

I generally don’t put towels in with clothes, although I have done if I need one washed quickly.

Cinocino · 12/07/2024 22:04

Some please explain to me how it’s better to leave well over a weeks worth of knickers and pjs lying in a washing basket, which is just a huge breeding ground for bacteria than to wash everything immediately and together?
Maybe the reason some of you need to boil your pants is because they’re a month old!

Absorbed into the weave of the fabric? Guess it's an average that includes men and children?

What's so special about tea towels? If you don't think your washing machine actually works so it's just spreading poo particles over whatever is in it then surely you're also horrified about tje same particles remaining on your underwear and anything else in the wash.

It's totally illogical.

What's so special about tea towels?? They bloody dry dishes that you eat from!!!! I couldn't care less if underwear is washed with other clothes but not with something I dry dishes with..but this isn't even an issue for my as I wash tea towels by hand only. However it'll make me think twice about eating at relatives/friends houses 🤣

You honestly think that after being washed in a washing machine (with some pants) that your tea towels are going to be dirty enough to leave shit on your dishes?

VeryStressedMum · 12/07/2024 22:11

I separate in a similar
Towels and tea towels and underwear and bedding go in together on a 60
Other clothes go in on a 40 separated by colours.
Some clothes go on a 30 separated by colour
Occasionally do a delicate wash if necessary.
Probably making a load of work for myself but it's what I've always done I actually don't think I could change it!

So you don't think washing machines actually clean what goes in them. You think anything that goes in with underwear will retain bits of poo but you aren't bothered about poo being on any of your clothes because you don't dry plates with your clothes.

It just seems odd to me that someone so worried their washing machine didn't work properly would be upset about wearing clothes with poo on them rather than only worrying about the tea towels.

Caroparo52 · 12/07/2024 22:14

If I'm feeling keen then white get separated out. All on cold. Boom.

YorkshireTeaBiscuits · 12/07/2024 22:14

I separate lile this:

Bedding and towels
Dark coloured
Mixed coloured
Light coloured
Whites
Pink/purples/ŕeds
Undies and socks
Tea towels

I do realise that I am a bit strange

Funfaxfan · 12/07/2024 22:18

Sorry but the academic studying poo smear on knickers and hand towels needs to have their computer hard drive looked at by the authorities.

Thenakedwineglass · 12/07/2024 22:19

I separate:
darks
lights
gym / sports kit - goes in with dettol
wet bedding / soiled pants (small children) again with dettol
dog beds and blankets - lots of dettol

ive got germ related ocd and even with that my tea towels go in with my knickers 😁

Changingplace · 12/07/2024 22:19

Ponderingwindow · 12/07/2024 20:24

I know I am uptight about separations. Cleaning cloths, tea towels, bathroom towels, knickers, etc all go in separate loads. I just make sure I have enough of everything that I can run a full wash when I do run them.

If I waited until I had enough knickers to do a full wash of knickers I’d have none left to wear

JacJac77 · 12/07/2024 22:19

I agree with you, I think it's a bit grim to wash tea towels with underwear. I separate lights and darks (clothes), then I usually wash only underwear together, and then bedding and towels together. I keep dirty tea towels in a bag, and when I have a few I do a mini load of them on their own at 60 degrees.

mitogoshi · 12/07/2024 22:20

All in together but separate whites of course ish

I do. We also have and use bidets in our bathrooms, so maybe my standards are different than yours.

Slightly off topic… but for the record and from the food standards agency “You should not wash raw meat, fish, and poultry. Washing meat, fish and poultry under a tap can splash bacteria onto your hands, clothes, utensils and worktops. See our cross-contamination pages for further information.”
my bacteriology lecturer was very adamant about this being a risk factor for food poisoning as well. You should not wash meat.

Why avoiding cross-contamination is important

Cross-contamination occurs when bacteria is transferred between different foods, from food to surfaces, and from surfaces to food.

Yes!! So basically if poo & manky undercarriage stuff spreads around anything that pants are washed with then even if pants are isolated and washed alone they will still be contaminated with poo, so in this mindset you’d never ever have clean pants 🤷‍♀️
