How do you separate laundry?

So.. need some honest opinions here. I posted a comment on a previous thread mentioning that washing tea towels together with knickers is gross IMO. Received quite a few comments telling me I'm uptight and bizarre. I honestly think that even if you wash them at 90 degrees, you still shouldn't mix tea towels and underwear. Am I in minority then thinking this? Genuinely curious.

Slightly off topic… but for the record and from the food standards agency “You should not wash raw meat, fish, and poultry. Washing meat, fish and poultry under a tap can splash bacteria onto your hands, clothes, utensils and worktops. See our cross-contamination pages for further information.”
my bacteriology lecturer was very adamant about this being a risk factor for food poisoning as well. You should not wash meat.

Thanks. I am aware of the recommendations, but I prefer to clean my meat. I know this is controversial and i know restaurants dont wash meats etc. I am very careful and disinfect the sink , worktops.

What's so special about tea towels?? They bloody dry dishes that you eat from!!!! I couldn't care less if underwear is washed with other clothes but not with something I dry dishes with..but this isn't even an issue for my as I wash tea towels by hand only. However it'll make me think twice about eating at relatives/friends houses 🤣

Do you not think your washing machine works? And also, washing tea towels & knickers together at 60 is more hygienic than doing dish towels by hand. I’d be more concerned about someone who washed dish towels by hand than chucking everything on a hot wash.

spikeandbuffy · 12/07/2024 22:34

I don't separate anything but then tea towels I just use to dry my hands really
Everything at 40c with bio powder and dettol laundry cleanser
Occasional 60 wash for flannels and towels

mildlydispeptic · 12/07/2024 22:35

I LOVE doing laundry. It's my peaceful place.

Hot whites: Sheets and towels at 60C
Gentle whites: underwear, shirts etc at 40C
Blacks and darks at 20-30C
Lighter colours/ pastels at 20-30C
Tea towels usually on their own at 60C but it's a pain waiting until I have enough to justify a load.

I mean, so many unkind comments here, for a simple question. You can just answer if you wish, there is no need to mock, make fun or treat people this way. I feel some of the people here get off on belittling others,.from behind the keyboard. My washing machine is fine, my undercarriage is fine as well (that was such a strange comment?). I was genuinely curious what people do.

Theres plenty of mocking, meanness and making fun of people who do their laundry different to you. Cleaning threads always bring out the unkind comments from all directions.

Do I think you're weird for separating? No
Do I think people who don't are dirty fuckers? No. Some of the PPs make it sound they think not separating is equal to use the plate to wipe an arse.

Have you ever seen a toilet brush thread OP? Those are wild.

IncompleteSenten · 12/07/2024 20:03

I have to ask how dirty are people's pants that they need a boil wash, a flame thrower and a priest?
What the fuck's up with your undercarriage? See a doctor. 😁

This comments made my night 🤣

I don't separate anything. It all goes in together at 40 degrees.

Pretty much this, although I do a dark wash and a light wash and tea towels, knickers etc get chucked in with either.

The world has not ended

autienotnaughty · 12/07/2024 22:44

Well I only dry stuff that comes out of the dishwasher with my tea towels with clean hands so there aren't many germs on them when they are washed!! Sorry to disappoint you 😅

ThePoshUns · 12/07/2024 22:47

Whites and lights
Brights
Darks
Towels inc tea towels which I wash hot with laundry sanitizer

GreensFuckOff · 12/07/2024 22:48
  1. Whites/light colours, including white bedding (30 degrees)
  2. Dark colours including dark bedding (30 degrees)
  3. Towels and tea towels (60 or occasionally 90 degrees)
  4. Technical fabrics/gym kits (that need no fabric conditioner, 30 degrees)
  5. Delicates (rare!)
DementedPanda · 12/07/2024 22:49

Towels

Dog Bedding with a drum clean wash after.

Isnt that how you are supposed to do it?

Mystro202 · 12/07/2024 22:51

cardibach · 12/07/2024 21:52

Well, I wipe my arse so there isn’t generally poo on my knickers. If there happened to be for some reason the washing machine would wash it away, not just from my knickers but from everything else in there too. If you don’t think it does, you must think you are putting on knickers covered in poo all the time.

Unless you're putting pads under your arse then you're going to have poo particles in your pants, you may not see them but they are there!!

YellowphantGrey · 12/07/2024 22:53

Darks in one load
Lights and pants and socks with a colour catcher. These two loads are done on a Friday afternoon.

White towels (whole family) done every Thursday

Our bedding and child's bedding done alternate weeks

Cleaning cloths, kitchen cloth, oven gloves, tea towels, bathmat, toilet hand towels and kitchen hand towels washed Friday mornings (teatowels changed daily)

My pillowcases changed daily and washed weekly (Satin so delicate wash with bras)

FrangipaniBlue · 12/07/2024 23:01

Towels/cloths - hot wash and tumble dry

Underwear - so that it can be chucked in the tumble dryer

Whites/light coloured clothes

Dark coloured clothes

FrangipaniBlue · 12/07/2024 23:02

Oh and bedding although sometimes that goes in with towels!

ForGreyKoala · 12/07/2024 23:18

I really can't imagine having so little going on in my life that I need to spend time worrying about tea towels being washed with knickers. The only reason mine aren't is that all but one pair of my knickers are black so would be in the dark wash and the tea towels wouldn't.

And I wash things in cold water, as is usual in this part of the world.

JurassicClark · 12/07/2024 23:18

This thread mostly convinces me a lot of people have no faith that their washing machines actually work.

Nannyfannybanny · 12/07/2024 23:22

Wash your meat,do you use soapy water at 60c! I separate whites and pastels from dark. First go on at 40c, yup, that includes tea towels, towels, which are used on clean crockery and bodies. DH walks about in white socks,no slippers/shoes. Lidl none bio pods. The rest at 20c,my machine doesn't have 30c. It's a fancy LG, direct drive. My towels are expensive Sanderson.

Mystro202 · 12/07/2024 23:25

There was actually a meme on fb a few months ago of a tea towel on a washing line next to a pair of boxers with holes in them. The caption was something along the lines of "this is why I don't trust the food at other people's houses" and I honestly thought it was a joke but going by the responses here - obviously not 😆

Caswallonthefox · 12/07/2024 23:27

I don't separate anything. If I did it would take forever to get a decent load.
You'd hate me, I use reusable cloths for kitchen stuff and wiping after using the toilet. All go into a 30° wash, I also use an eco egg.
Washing liquid/powder/egg are formulated to be used at low temperatures.
Everything smells clean.

Cmon it's s not about having nothing going on in your life. I work full time and have kids and a husband. I don't have time to worry about silly things this is as disgusting as having overflowing bins and a dirty house.

Sherwil16 · 12/07/2024 21:54

I separate laundry totally by this colour scheme:
Whites
Black and grey
Blue and green
Pink and red
Yellow ( this pile takes a while to build up)
Other colours have to fit in somewhere
No separation by type

I admire your dedication with this. I think it would probably take me a year or more to have yellow wash though

Notthatcatagain · 12/07/2024 23:40

Lights and darks at 40, towels and bedding at 60. Very occasionally just whites. Dishcloths and tea towels go in with towels and bedding. My very favourite clothes I tend to hand-wash. I'm with you OP, never put teatowels in with underwear, seems nasty to me. Actually I think I prefer your way of separating out pj's and underwear completely, might give that a try see if I can make a load up. Would make drying more straightforward on wet days
