How do you separate laundry?

So.. need some honest opinions here. I posted a comment on a previous thread mentioning that washing tea towels together with knickers is gross IMO. Received quite a few comments telling me I'm uptight and bizarre. I honestly think that even if you wash them at 90 degrees, you still shouldn't mix tea towels and underwear. Am I in minority then thinking this? Genuinely curious.

Why? They are all clean once they come out. I generally do towels and tea towels together but I'm failing to see the issue ( apart from ruining lacy underwear at high temperature)

Washing at 40 degrees or less doesn't kill any bacteria. Mixing tea towels most people use on dishes with underwear and washing them together it's just gross IMO. You have people moaning that's it's all clean anyway , but the same people will say you shouldn't wash your meats for fear of spreading bacteria. Make it make sense.

Whites / non-whites / dog stuff /towels / bedding
Usually 40c but towels at 60. However the only thing I try and be strict about is keeping whites separate and doing the dogs stuff alone in a bag otherwise it all comes out hairy.

Really couldn't care less about pants and tea towels.

Hopefully this thread will make people think twice next time they put a wash on!! I actually feel sick at the thought of peoples poo particles spinning round with their tea towels 🤢

From the comments so far...highly unlikely. Apparently, washing tea towels in a nappy wash it's also a good idea.

What's so special about tea towels? If you don't think your washing machine actually works so it's just spreading poo particles over whatever is in it then surely you're also horrified about tje same particles remaining on your underwear and anything else in the wash.

It's totally illogical.

JC03745 · 12/07/2024 21:27

OP- Is it a cultural thing for you?
Some cultures see it as a taboo to wash undergarments with other clothes.
Edit- This stemmed from long before washing machines were available and it was all hand washing.

See below:
The average adult undergarment has about a tenth of a gram of fecal matter,” Dr. Charles Gerba, renowned germ researcher and professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, told CTVNews.ca by telephone earlier this month.
“By my estimations, a week’s worth of dirty underwearwould amount to about an airline peanut-sized amount of fecal matter.”
Gerba, an environmental microbiologist best known for his research in water quality, turned his attention to household laundry a decade ago thanks to a rise in energy-saving cold-water washing.
According to his research, Gerba says dirty underwear and jeans are among the worst offenders for collecting bacteria when it comes to our clothes.
But hand towels remain the number one culprit for containing fecal bacteria, with over 80 per cent testing positive.

So your fine with washing your kinickers with your Pjs though? Do you not worry about poo particles getting all over your skin when you put your pjs on?

cardibach · 12/07/2024 21:38

Screamingabdabz · 12/07/2024 19:48

No it’s disgusting to wash underwear with cloth you wipe plates with.

But people are mingers. I can be in the supermarket and see people who look perfectly nice and ordinary - but they clearly don’t wash or dry their clothes properly and they’ve gone nose blind - as they stink. Low temps, non-bio… it all keeps the bacteria hanging about and thriving.

Keep separating op. The dirty fuckers will say ‘no one died’ but yeah, that’s a low bar.

Isn’t your washing machine getting things clean then? I’d get that fixed if I were you.

As I said, my knickers and PJs are washed on a hot wash. Also, I wouldn't clean cutlery with my pyjamas. As I said, this is my way of doing things, right or wrong. But some of you getting defensive for some reason....

It's the obsessive separators getting defensive. Talking increasingly angrily about poo particles and people being minging and that only their way creates true cleanliness.

The rest of us are more amused than defensive.

cardibach · 12/07/2024 21:42

Moonlightdancing · 12/07/2024 20:05

Tea towels and underwear should be in a 60 degree wash, according to guidelines. Not my own, to clarify.

Should?
Guidelines?
What happens if not?
What about silk undies?

Ponderingwindow · 12/07/2024 20:24

I know I am uptight about separations. Cleaning cloths, tea towels, bathroom towels, knickers, etc all go in separate loads. I just make sure I have enough of everything that I can run a full wash when I do run them.

How many people do you live with/how many pairs of knickers do you have that you can muster up a full load of just them?

SundayTulips · 12/07/2024 21:46

Moonlightdancing · 12/07/2024 20:22

That's quite a standard you've set...

I do the same but at 30. Better for the environment and all seems clean when done

cardibach · 12/07/2024 21:47

IncompleteSenten · 12/07/2024 20:27

Do you find 30 and 40 are enough? I ended up having to rewash things so now everything apart from wool and delicates gets done at 60.
What washing powder do you use? I use Tesco tropical sunshine. Maybe I need to swap to a better one.

Most modern washing powder is formulated for 30 or 40 and probably doesn’t work as well at 60.
I’ve never had an issue. Wash most things at 30. No knicker separation. Also no ill effects.

Cheersmedears123 · 12/07/2024 21:47

I don’t separate anything. Not even darks, whites, etc. Never had a problem and it all goes in together.

cardibach · 12/07/2024 21:48

TooTiredOfThisShit · 12/07/2024 20:37

I wash by room, ie the kids who share one room go in one wash (or rather, their clothes do) and the others go in a different wash. So much easier to sort and put away.

But I agree, I'd feel icky putting something actually dirty in with just grubby clothes. My husband chucked swimming stuff in with school uniform once, and the kids smelt like chlorine all week!

There’s definitely something wrong with your washing machine if that’s the case.

Of couse one might surmise that those who did die, pointed at the laundry basket gasping...
" It was...it was the MIXED washing that done it."
before slumping on the floor on a heap.

That made me laugh 😃 thank you!!

LadyCrumpet · 12/07/2024 21:51

Everything goes in together, just separated by colour.
