They wont go where I go - original Stevie Wonder, covered by George Michael. It's just perfect in every single way.

AIBU or do you think there is a better cover???

Not so much a cover but Marc Almonds duet with Gene Pitney to make a duet of 'Something's gotten hold of my heart' originally sung by Gene as a solo record is wonderful.

I remember that song from when I was a young girl.

1988 so I was 4 when it came out.

It's the first song I really remember being aware of, and even at that age it did something to me, even though I wouldn't have understood what the lyrics were about.

It's a song I never hear. Never hear it on radio or anything, but anytime it pops into my mind I am instantly transported back to being 4 years old.

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

Strongly disagree with this one. The original is fantastic. I don't see what AAF have done really other than turn it into their style. I don't see that they've added anything to it.

Disturbed's cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Sound of Silence. Incredible and brilliant. Even Paul Simon contacted Disturbed to say how good he thought it was.

I'd never heard this version until recently at a young man's funeral & it is brilliant but sad 😔
I love Dancing in the dark by Bruce Springsteen & covered by Amy Mcdonald (Scottish singer).

plainjayne8282 · 11/07/2024 17:56

Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet but Creedence Clearwater Revival's version of Heard it Through the Grapevine is fantastic.

Obviously Marvin Gaye's is great, but I love the dark, menacing feeling of CCR's.

GlitchStitch · 11/07/2024 18:06

Agree with:

KD Lang- Hallelujah (best version of this song by far)
Always on my Mind- Pet Shop Boys (this was voted best ever cover version in a poll I saw)
Communards- Don't leave me this way

Also love Cyndi Lauper- I'm Gonna Be Strong but love the Gene Pitney original equally, can't pick between them.

Same for Cyndi Lauper and Roy Orbison versions of I Drove All Night. Not sure which one is the cover, think Roy, but love them both equally.

Sugababes version of Freak like me is a true cover. The original was by Adina Howard and came out in the mid 90s

It’s a mash up - Adina Howard and Gary Numan

To be fair, any Dylan cover is likely to be better than the original!

The Animals' version of House of the Rising Son is a cover of an earlier US version of a traditional English folk song.

It's absolutely the best cover mentioned on this thread IMHO!

Nah, I prefer the Old French version.

House Of The Rising Sun 1270 A.D (Cover in Old French 800-1400 A.D) Bardcore/Medieval style

1270 A.D was a bad year to be in Tunisia, nobody won 😢 Also, take me back to when the French used trilled R's 😂Original song by @TheAnimalsOfficial : https...

Songs good, voice awful!

Mind you, I think Janis Joplin had a grating voice, but what passion!

There was a woman on a talent show ages ago who sang Running Up That Hill better than ANYONE!!!

Placebo does the best version of this.

Also,
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley

The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

Wicked Game - Stone Sour, even though I hate Corey Taylor.

ETA
Feeling Good - Muse

I also really like Ryan Adams’ version of Wonderwall, though not better than the original.

This is the original Make you feel my love by Bob Dylan. Whatever you think of Adele, you must agree, her version is miles better than this!

I actually love this! Bob is a mad man but he has some very heartfelt songs and the love comes across perfectly. Also love Adele's though.

Yes I know what you're saying. I was very surprised when I found out it was a cover. It feels almost disrespectful to say a cover is better, as it's so much harder to create a song out of nothing than cover a song that's already been written.

I actually disagree with his, although I understand why most prefer Adele. Bob’s voice sounds awful in his version, one of the worst examples of his singing. But I love his music and I’m just not a fan of Adele.
