They wont go where I go - original Stevie Wonder, covered by George Michael. It's just perfect in every single way.

AIBU or do you think there is a better cover???

I didnt know a lot of these were covers! I love The Killers doing Dire Straits Romeo and Juliet although I do like the original too

I didn’t know they covered this, I don’t think I could bring myself to listen to it 😂 Romeo and Juliet is one of my favourite songs.

I actually disagree with his, although I understand why most prefer Adele. Bob’s voice sounds awful in his version, one of the worst examples of his singing. But I love his music and I’m just not a fan of Adele.

I think they're two different animals really. Adele has that beautiful voice and really does the song justice. But Bob has the grit that comes of exactly where the song came from. It's such a lovely song that it's almost unexpected coming from him so it takes you aback a bit. He's such a grumpy fucker that it's particularly lovely when you hear songs like this from him 😄

A performance at the Proms by Dame Judy Dench of Send in the Clowns. It's on YouTube

Suspicious minds by the fine young cannibals

featuring Jimmy Somerville on backing.

He loves a good cover does Jimmy

Heard it Through the Grapevine by The Slits, love Marvyn Gaye but this is very good.

MayonnaiseOnMyChips · 11/07/2024 18:59

The Killers Romeo and Juliet

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 11/07/2024 19:14

I didn't even realise, but I love that George Michael song!

I think you're wrong though, as Johnny Cash has three awesome covers in the form of 'One', 'Hurt' and 'Personal Jesus'.

I prefer Steps' 'Tragedy' 😳 I think that Muse's cover of 'Feeling Good' is great.

Probably my all time favourite cover though, is 'Take Me to the River' by Talking Heads.

Thank you, yes!

The Dan Band - Total Eclipse of the Heart

(Once down a youtube rabbit hole I was shocked that "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany was a cover and the original version sung by four blokes in the 60's came across a bit creepy)

Spiderbait covering "Black Betty" by Ram Jam.

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Four Tops - Walk Away Renee
David Bowie - Sorrow
Siouxie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence

Jesus, I'm showing my age now...

I had to scroll down a surprisingly long way before finding All Along the Watchtower and Sorrow! Very much looking forward to listening to your other recommendations.

Cake’s cover of Gloria Gaynor’s I will survive -makes the lyrics and the strength in the song come alive for me

One of my favourite covers too

Needhelp101 · 11/07/2024 19:37

I haven't even read the whole thread yet but just wanted to say thank you for so many great songs that I'll be listening to tonight (and am also ashamed that I didn't realise a lot of these were covers!)

Weird AF to hear it in a male voice and sans technobeat.

Although the Billie Joe Armstrong cover with his sons is great.

Olivia Newton John's cover of Jolene is absolutely awesome, better than Dolly Parton's original. They did a duet of it shortly before ONJ died.

Disturbed's cover of Simon & Garfunkel's Sound of Silence. Incredible and brilliant. Even Paul Simon contacted Disturbed to say how good he thought it was.

Came here to say exactly this. I love disturbed's music anyway but this is next level beautiful music.

Nooooo to Hendrix and All Along the Watchtower.

I've seen Bob doing it live and it was awesome. Also showing my age, though several decades less than his...

In fairness I'm talking about Dylan's original acoustic version of the song. This is what Wikipedia has to say about Dylan's live versions:

"Dylan first played the song live in concert on the Bob Dylan and the Band 1974 Tour, his first tour since 1966. His live performances have been influenced by Hendrix's cover, to the extent that they have been called covers of a cover. The singer has performed the song live more than any of his other ones, with over 2,250 recitals."

I'd also add, cos I forgot it the first time round, The Byrds cover of Dylan's Mr Tambourine Man.
