Reasons you wouldn’t move to US

1000 replies

Preiu · 10/07/2024 14:08

Dh has been offered a job in the US. The increase in salary would put us into a completely different wealth bracket but I really don’t want to move.

  • fear of home invasion with guns
  • school shooting - guns in general I guess
  • American exceptionalism attitude annoys me
  • Being away from family
  • Not having Europe on doorstep

Can I ask if you have any other reasons

Bear!! Was it greasy?

In Canada I had some things with caribou meat, it was so delicious. I wish I could get it in the UK.

Edited

Yeah, bear is greasy. He said the venison was really good, though.

As for religiosity, it is incredibly regional! I won't discount the importance of the Christian nationalists who want to rule the country but on a day to day basis the religious makeup of the US varies immensely, from how much people practice to what religious group they are. In New England people are not really any more religious than the UK. Catholics are the largest denomination but a lot of people aren't church-goers. New York City is interesting because there are quite a few religious people as well as many who aren't, but it's so mixed that no one group dominates at all, more like London. You go 5 minutes from an Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood and you're in an Indo-Guyanese and Indo-Trinidadian one with lots of Hindu temples.

Now you go down South and it's very evangelical, lots of Baptists, more what people think of when they think of American Christianity. And there's the Mormon Belt in the western US from Idaho down to Arizona.

Oh and the lack of recycling! Jesus! Nobody has recycling bins. They use polystyrene and plastic one-use cups like it's the latest fashion. Am talking big companies as well as private individuals, big restaurants and small.

This is particularly bad in the South, my relatives won’t drink the tap water so they buy bottled water at Walmart individually 100s at a time - and throw them in the trash after.

Re Bins, in some areas of Upstate New York I'd be surprised if they had wheelie bins as they have twice weekly bin collections because of the bears. Actually at the resort I stayed on the owners on the other days took the rubbish to the dump themselves because of bears.
But that's not a problem in NYC. In Chicago apartments used to have huge shared "dumpsters" 30 years ago, and I think sorted waste for recycling even then.

London has piles of bags on the streets. I get that there's no room in a densely-populated area like NYC or London for people to store wheelie bins, but they ought to look at Amsterdam's solution, which as well as being tidier, cheaper and more convenient than scheduled collections, should also be animal-proof:

You are allowed to criticise the US without being accused of racism and xenophobia, you know?

BlueskysandWind · 13/07/2024 12:51

Sure you are. But posters shouldn't make shit up.

This.

The US/American bashing around here is quite sad really. It’s the only country that is ever bashed, like every other country is perfect. The US is huge, it is very diverse unlike many other countries. I see that as a plus to be able to meet and work with people from different backgrounds.

And someone said it was ugly, how can an entire country be ugly. There are mountains, rivers, canyons, cities forests etc. there’s a lot to see here, lots of different foods to choose from from different cultures.

I grew up as a POC in Germany, travelled to France, Italy, and Austria and I experienced more racism in those countries than I have in my 30 years in the US.

people should stop making sweeping statements about an entire country, it’s basically the same as making statements about a certain race or culture of people.

Every state, city has its own characteristics and of course depending on who you are will make it make a difference how much you enjoy living/visiting that place.

British people have no business commenting on fat people in the US given the obesity stats in the U.K. .

Bashing an entire country without an iota of understanding of regional differences says more about the clowns commenting than anything about America.

DrCoconut · 13/07/2024 13:13

I have relatives in New York State. They have a lovely lifestyle as they have good jobs which provide decent money, nice house in the suburbs, health cover etc. They don't seem unduly worried about gun crime but to us even the less gun centric states are arguably more relaxed about ownership than the uk. I can imagine it could be awful being poor and living in a bad area and worrying about becoming ill.

BlueskysandWind · 13/07/2024 13:24

Low income people in NY can get a free or inexpensive health care plan through the state.

VeryQuaintIrene · 10/07/2024 14:13

Do you really think the Brits (I am one, btw) don't have a serious case of exceptionalism?!

Where would the job be? That makes a massive difference. In 30 years here, my home has never been invaded by guns, amazing though it may seem. The others, I grant you, though if you are going to be very well-off anyway, there are planes that go very regularly between the US and UK.

So if they do, that means Americans don't? Not how it works.

AllPrincessAnneshorses · 13/07/2024 13:52

It's irrelevant why I wouldn't move there. You need to have, and stand by, your own reasons.

YankSplaining · 13/07/2024 14:29

Everyone I know recycles, has for decades, and has bins with wheels.

It’s perfectly fair to list reasons why OP might not want to move to the US, but lying about Americans and trashing an entire nation is unfair and mean-spirited. You know what’s particularly sad about the American-bashing on this thread? The fact that so many Americans are such big fans of so many people and things from Britain. You gave us so much awesome cultural stuff! Shakespeare, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Lord of the Rings, James Bond, Paddington Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Agatha Christie, Roald Dahl, Jane Austen, Monty Python, Amy Winehouse, Downton Abbey…I could literally spend the rest of the day typing examples. We’re a country packed with Anglophiles. We like you.

Sometimes I can't for the life of me imagine why!

But I, for one, have felt some of this goodwill when living and travelling in the US in the past, and appreciated it. My home is in the UK but I love the states. I'll always continue to enjoy my return visits there.

BigFatLiar · 13/07/2024 14:56

I think the US is great for people with access to good healthcare and good jobs. Remember though that its a big place and not uniform. For a lot though it can be tough. There is a lack of job security, you can get fired without any reason in many states, no maternity leave, little access to welfare.

Death penalty, self ID, Trump supporters, Biden supporters, healthcare, guns, lack of legal safe abortion, it’s 50 degrees in California this week.

You couldn’t pay me any amount of money to live there. It’s a mad country.

50 degrees? My app says mid to high 20’s, low 30’s on the coast

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 13/07/2024 15:17

50 C in Death Valley, 50 F in San Francisco

BlueskysandWind · 13/07/2024 15:21

Personally I stay away from Death Valley in the summertime. The name suggests why it's a good idea.

IClaudine · 13/07/2024 15:28

I would love to have the chance to live in the US for a while, as long as I had a decent job and health insurance.

Maddy70 · 13/07/2024 15:29

Project 25
TRUMP
American exceptionalism
Unhealthy foods/portions
Safety
Distance from Europe
Healthcare

BigFatLiar · 13/07/2024 15:36

If you or any of the family have existing conditions check the healthcare package covers them.

He needs his existing holiday cover carried over.

At least your kids won't fail at school. From what I hear you can get a pass for simply enrolling.

If its not permanent then give it a try check what happens on return re pensions etc.

It'll be an experience.

Of course, the US is famous world wide for its generous free and subsidised healthcare for those who can’t afford insurance.
And the reasonable costs of medical care for the insured.

Renowned. Envy of the world… it’s a mystery why the world it’s ranked 70th behind, well most of the West, Cuba, Turkmenistan, Costa Rica and on and on…

Pandadunks · 13/07/2024 15:56

The travel insurance we have for going to the US costs 3 x that if anywhere else.
Absolutely mad to go without it though. Fall over and break an arm and you can be £10k down.
One DC needed to spend a night in a US hospital for observation after falling and bumping head. The bill, that the travel insurance cowered, for one night, no specific treatment came to $ 10,698.
The ambulance was another $2,4k separately.
Mental prices.

I didn't say that. You might want consider why it upsets you so much that the US is not quite as bad as you thought.

Many of the posts on this thread are as ridiculous as much of what Donald Trump says, and show similar levels of bias.

However it is true that Palm Springs reached 51c this week. That was a record. Even sith climate change temps ‘in the 50s’ are far from a regular occurrence.

Even elsewhere, raccoons are a problem! I remember a story a few years back about Toronto trying to invent raccoon-proof bins. The raccoons beat them. There's a reason they're nicknamed "trash pandas".

Oh hell yes. I have a garbage shed because of those little buggers. We can't put the garbage on the street the night before collection around here either, because they'll rip it to shreds. They are smart and they are relentless.

Trumpers don't. They can't even find the UK on a map and they're pathological xenophobes. So that's actually a significant % of Americans who don't like the British. People like them are the reason the US gets bashed.
