Dogs on tables in Cafes !!

Bride2Be25 · 06/07/2024 20:30

I was in a cafe today (part of a very well known chain) and not only saw several dogs sitting up on the chairs & sofas but one delightful family had their dog up on the table!!! Staff didn’t been bat an eyelid.

I am honestly flabbergasted that people think this is acceptable. Not only do we have to put up with dogs barking at each other in restaurants and cafes & being covered in dog hair but we now risk eating our food off tables that have had an animal walking all over.

No point to this thread really but just giving people a heads up to be extremely mindful of where you eat - I will be avoiding any food establishments that allow dogs from now on and encourage others to do the same.

Yeah it's gross. Dog shit everywhere

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 06/07/2024 20:31

Was this at Megan’s?

Lifestooshort71 · 06/07/2024 20:32

And shouldn't be wiping their dirty bums and feet on the chairs either!

Darkfire · 06/07/2024 20:32

That’s gross, most places have a ‘paws on floors’ policy.

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/07/2024 20:38

Well of course it's unacceptable. But I hope your first action was to complain to the cafe staff, before starting a thread on MN about it.

No one here, not even the most ardent dog lover, is going to say YABU. So what exactly is your point?

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/07/2024 20:40

Never EVER seen that. Maybe you need to give people a heads up about exactly which cafe this is? That would be more useful.

Even more constructive, tell them that this has put you off using their cafe in future.

Personally whilst I wouldn't do it, I've seen significantly worse things be put on cafe tables, such as babies having nappies changed, shitty nappies, spit...

I tend to trust that cafes wipe tables down properly, and avoid any urges to lick the table myself.

Bride2Be25 · 06/07/2024 20:42

@LindorDoubleChoc yes of course I have complained to the cafe and as stated in my post there is no real point to my post other than to make people aware that this is what some dog owners now think is ok so if you are concious of hygiene to extra careful when eating out.

2dogsandabudgie · 06/07/2024 20:46

What was the name of the cafe and what was their response when you complained? I have seen dogs in a few cafes mainly tourist spots, but never on chairs and certainly not on tables.

NoMoreTories · 06/07/2024 20:52

i actively avoid any eaterie that allows dogs. I suggest you do the same, and we vote with our money. And tell the eateries why.

AmelieTaylor · 06/07/2024 20:52

@Bride2Be25

im with @WiddlinDiddlin I just resit the urge to lick cafe tables.

people put bags, babies bums & their belongings on tables - they're not hygienic!

they're less hygienic when they've been 'wiped' with a dirty cloth.

As least the dog reminds you not to lick the table.

(of course dogs shouldn't be on tables)

fungipie · 06/07/2024 20:55

As a forever dog lover and dog owner- this is absolutely NOT acceptable. And I would make this very clear to owner, and to restaurant Manager.

LenaMoon · 06/07/2024 20:57

My god another dog bashing thread. I'm in.

If I saw a dogs winking crusty sphincter at my eye level when I'm trying to enjoy a cucumber sandwich I'd literally vomit. Dirty, dirty beasts.

I’ve yet to see a parent put a baby’s bare arse on a table in a cafe. A parent sitting a baby on the table with a nappy and clothes on, is not the same as a dog sat with its hairy, shitty bare arsehole against the table, is it?

FOJN · 06/07/2024 20:58

What is wrong with people?

Why did the dog owner think this was is OK? Dogs on tables anywhere is unhygienic but surely people understand there are things you might do in your own home that are just not acceptable in a public place?

Why didn't the staff tell the owner to get their dog off the table?

TheChosenTwo · 06/07/2024 20:59

I choose not to eat at dog friendly places!
I don’t even mind dogs, I just don’t want bits of floaty dog hair wafting through the air and landing on my sandwich! Plus they do smell - fine when it’s your dog and in your own home, I don’t want to be eating around it though.
However we have quite a few places nearby that are dog friendly and quite a few that aren’t so everyone can go to a place that suits them and it’s never an issue.

There was a thread on here a while ago about someone changing a nappy on the table in cafe. I've never seen it but I haven't seen a dog on a table either.

Surely there is a big difference? Our dog will lie quietly in a far corner with us, and not bat an eyelid the whole time. We are very careful not to disturb anyone, sit too close, and always ask next table/s if they mind and move if they do. Why tar all dogs and dog owners with same brush.

Recently in two Hôtels, with a small area where dogs are allowed and nowhere else, we were unable to sit or eat as people without dogs sat there. On one occasion, the lady said we could not come as she is highly allergic to dogs. I did tell her quietly and politely, that it was not a good idea to sit there as it is the dedicated dog area, where we sat earlier, with other dog owners, and that the whole area would have dog allergens present. They refused to move so we quietly walked out and went to another eatery, in the rain (we were staying at the Hôtel for a few nights and paying very good money too, and had chosen Hôtel as having a dog friendly separate area).

fungipie · 06/07/2024 21:01

On both occasions, there were large notices saying 'reserved dog friendly area'.

Aspierational · 06/07/2024 21:01

My partner and I make sure to note if anywhere we go is dog-free, so we know to give them repeat custom! It's so irritating that hotels and restaurants are all advertising themselves as "dog friendly" now.

Why irritating? Why not be tolerant of people who are respectful and have well behaved, quiet and obedient dogs. If we are travelling, we can't leave dog in the hôtel room or holiday accommodation, so he has to come with us.

We will be respectful, polite, ensure those around us don't mind, sit in a corner, and the dog will just lie there on her clean blanket without a peep.

PalaminoPaint · 06/07/2024 21:16

I haven’t seen a dog on a table, but I have seen them allowed on the sofas and chairs in cafes and I don’t like this very much either. Especially as the sofa was fabric and could not simply be wiped afterwards.

I have seen a baby being changed on a table once whilst on holiday in the States, and I’ve seen babies changed on aeroplane seats far too many times, which I think is just grim, especially when planes have baby changing facilities in their albeit tiny bathrooms.

It seems that not everyone has common sense or just basic hygiene standards these days.

WhitesAndStripes · 06/07/2024 21:20

Disgusting. And I'm a dog owner.
I'd put that all over Trip advisor.

Your dog stinks. I am sure you either have a bad sense of smell, or are just inured to the stench, but me, I'd rather not eat a meal with that horrible smell in the air (especially when it has been raining). I will reward cafes/restaurants that ban dogs with my custom. Those who let dogs in, are obviously low on hygiene standards, so I'll give them a swerve.

You ARE disturbing people. Many people are allergic, and the country is so overrun with dogs now, it's getting hard to avoid them in public places like shops and restaurants.

Are you serious right now?😂 it’s not about ‘tarring all dogs and dog owners with the same brush,’ it’s about not wanting to have a dog in the same space as you. So what that you have a well behaved dog that’s lying down in the corner, people still have the right to not want to step into an establishment that accepts dogs.

I also actively avoid places that are dog friendly. Couldn’t care less about Mary and Joseph sitting in the corner with little doggy Halo. I don’t want to be around a dog and that’s all really

Oh my - what friendly souls you are. So just go to places which don't allow dogs- that is all fine by me.But don't tell me all dog owners are the same- my dog will never bother people or be on a seat, let alone on the table. And it does not stink either.

We will have to agree to disagree here. But let me tell you I never trust anyone who has such hatred and disgust towards dogs, and have always been proven right. Cheers- I wish you a lovely dog free day and life :)

My dog is not little, and it is a dog, not a doggie. Thanks.
