Dogs on tables in Cafes !!

I was in a cafe today (part of a very well known chain) and not only saw several dogs sitting up on the chairs & sofas but one delightful family had their dog up on the table!!! Staff didn’t been bat an eyelid.

I am honestly flabbergasted that people think this is acceptable. Not only do we have to put up with dogs barking at each other in restaurants and cafes & being covered in dog hair but we now risk eating our food off tables that have had an animal walking all over.

No point to this thread really but just giving people a heads up to be extremely mindful of where you eat - I will be avoiding any food establishments that allow dogs from now on and encourage others to do the same.

@Anonym00se you are absolutely right, dog unfriendly places are very few and far between because we dog lovers are more sociable, spend more money and don’t leave grumpy reviews on Trip Advisor!

You all need to get a dog and let a little joy into your hygienic, anti-septic lives!

I only go to dog-friendly places and I have NEVER seen a dog on a table..

Totally agree 👍.

I read “Dogs on tablets in cafes”. Crikey, if it’s not bad enough that parents are giving iPads to toddlers to keep them quiet, now the dogs are all screen addicts too!

I try and avoid dog friendly places but unfortunately dog-free places are few and far between these days where I live. Dogs are everywhere, cafes, pubs, even at the supermarket. It’s really weird.

@Anonym00se - that really made me giggle. Mind you, I have a very firm image in my mind of little English children all sitting cross legged on top of the dining room table to eat their supper, as I have seen so often on Mumsnet posters refer to "getting down from the table", as if they were on the table, not merely eating at the table.

Witnessed similar in Cafe Nero. They had those low coffee tables and a lady put the dogs water bowl on it and the dog stood with its paws on the table slobbering at the water. I was feeding the baby at the time. People used to criticise me for going over the tables/high chairs with Milton wipes - this is why.

I won’t go to a cafe that allows dogs. Yuck. 🤢

i actively avoid any eaterie that allows dogs. I suggest you do the same, and we vote with our money. And tell the eateries why.

I've started doing the same, it's got too much.

When two dogs start barking at each other it's unbearable.

LorettyTen · 29/10/2024 16:54

YANBU. I don't mind some dogs but I can't stand smelly or yappy ones. I think the trouble is that people think they're their children and treat them as such. It's disgusting letting them climb on furniture in a cafe.

Totally agree, but where can you find somewhere that does not allow dogs in? My heart always sinks when I see someone with a dog coming into a restaurant or cafe, and feel like telling the place I won't be back. But just about everywhere seems to allow dogs now.

We had a few days away last week in a lovely area. The large village we stayed in did not have one dog free cafe, tea shop or restaurant. Through one tea shop window I saw a dog sitting on its owner's lap, snuffling round the plates on the table.

Fortunately I had anticipated this and took all the food we needed, including cake and other treats. We didn't spend a single penny on hospitality in five days.

I would have liked to be able to tell all the cafe & tea shop owners why we didn't visit them but I doubt if they would care anyway.

Oh look, another anti-dog thread. Imagine having such hatred towards innocent vulnerable creatures.

This thread's a few months old tbf.

As for innocent and vulnerable, come on, there's a broad spectrum of dog breeds. Some not so vulnerable.

And why is it 'hatred' if someone dislikes dogs sitting on sofas in coffee shops and eating from tables in cafes? It's possible to like dogs and still not be ok with this sort of behaviour. Plenty of dog owners wouldn't dream of letting their dogs do stuff like this in a place where people are eating - and presumably there is no hatred of dogs involved.

Mochudubh · 29/10/2024 17:46

Wetherspoons are all famously dog-free, even outside, the owner has no plans to change this.

OonaStubbs · 30/10/2024 00:37

Rats are innocent and vulnerable creatures. I wouldn't eat in a cafe that had rats running around.

MrsClatterbuck · 30/10/2024 01:37

While in Marks and Spencer tonight one woman had her dog standing in her trolley. I know these trolleys sit out overnight but still thought it was a bit gross
