To be so happy at so many women in the cabinet

Standupcitizen · 06/07/2024 19:16

Anyone else absolutely thrilled to see women represented equally in the cabinet for the first time ever?

22 appointments. 11 women, 11 men. It seems completely deliberate. Previously the highest % of females in the cabinet was something like 38%. First female chancellor in history as well.

I feel elated that for the first time in my life, we have equality of the sexes in government.

Whatever you think of starmer, the labour party or of the women in question, this is absolutely huge to me, i feel ridiculously emotional about it. I think as a woman who has been dismissed, talked over, belittled, discriminated against and overlooked for promotion in favour of men in the workplace - if the government can do it, then other companies have no excuse.

Welsh Labour has a black leader.

And Scottish Labour has Anas Sarwar, who is Asian.

urbanbuddha · 07/07/2024 08:16

Liz Truss is a woman who graduated from Oxford. It didn’t make her good at her job. Let’s wait and see.

It depends what you mean by her job. If it was to make a lot of money for some gamblers, who paid for her promotion, to be even richer than they already where, then she was hugely successful at her job.
If you take an alternative view and think the PM should be working in the interests of the country, then I think you are mistaken as to what she thought her role was.

I think the new cabinet and their supporting teams are impressive choices. With the exception of Lammy. Sorry, but I think he's an arrogant fool.

I think he is a bad choice. Not very diplomatic! But well connected. We will see what he does

But it’s not representative. Almost exclusively white and able bodied.

Are there any Labour MPs with (visible) disabilities?
I totally think people with disabilities should be seen and represented more, I just wonder if the right candidates were available to Keir.

Marsha de Cordova is blind (& black). She had 2 posts in the shadow cabinet so Keir has worked with her. She resigned which suggests to me that she perhaps didn't want to be a Cabinet minister. Not every politician does.

Why does skin colour matter more than class? David ‘men can grow a cervix’ Lammy is a terrible choice for one of the top offices of state - his skin colour is irrelevant to his intelligence/ ability, but probably guaranteed his appointment.

I’m depressed at the sight of all those women in cabinet. Every last one of them has sold out her sex by embracing the deeply misogynist gender ideology. Something which affects the most vulnerable women in society far more than others.

Not one of those women have uttered a word of condemnation re the avalanche of rape and death threats Rosie Duffield continues to receive. Not one.

Yep, the only message I’m seeing is that if you’re a woman and you are willing to sell out other women in order to pander to everything men want, they might make a space for you at the table.

SharonEllis · 07/07/2024 10:24

@WomensRightsRenegade @Naunet I feel that we are in a weird situation where otherwise decent people have a complete blind spot on this issue. I suspect its one of the reasons de Cordova hasnt progressed as she is not fully signed up to gender ideology. The way Duffield, Womens Declaration etc has been treated is scandalous. Im hoping the party can move towards some sense now. I think Streeting seems to be on the right track.

Thanks for that, just read about her, she sounds great!

I think there are only five MPs with disabilities in parliament.

Come on. You know perfectly well she was investigated by the police and HMRC and they found nothing.

Knowing the area, the circumstances and the houses, I can only wonder why, though I wouldn't be surprised at my conclusion!

Fortunately your conclusion doesn’t count

What is the guarantee that having 11 women in the cabinet will mean more talent and it being better for the country. Why is it better than 5 women getting there on merit rather a quote of 11?

How do you feel about the 11 men? Are they all there on talent?

Remember covid and how no one making decisions thought of the impact lockdowns would have on women's health, schooling of children, domestic abuse, etc etc.
And how when restrictions were lifted barbers were allowed to open, but salons weren't. Because men could get haircuts but women with pcos couldn't get their beards waxed because that was for vanity 😒
Yeah, that's what happens when women aren't involved in decisions.

How do you know there was any quota? Are you so sure that they aren’t the best for their role and the number is a coincidence?

The fact you aren't asking the same question about the men demonstrates why it's important to have equal representation.

It is wonderful however the truth will be if they can define a woman without any hint of irony

Maybe naive of me but I thought this Tory bot nonsense would end after labour got elected 🙄

readingmakesmehappy · 06/07/2024 21:06

The Conservatives have had three women leaders. Labour remains about 50 years behind there.

Thatcher, May and Truss.

Yay! Such wonderful examples of female leadership and an absolute role model for young girls 🙄

Moonmelodies · 07/07/2024 12:33

Is it true that David Lammy believes that some adult male mammals have cervixes? Really?

daliesque · 07/07/2024 12:42

It is if you're working class and didn't have the option of buying your way into a private education. Finally people like me are represented in government.

Totally agree. It's easy to be self made when your parents were able to send you to private school where you naturally have lots of advantages over those of us who weren't.

I don't think the people who go on and on and on endlessly about how people who aren't rich do send their kids to private school actually realise that for many families it is not, and never will be, an option. That it's just not a case of skipping a few foreign holidays and not buying a new car, it is a choice between eating and not eating, heating the house or staying cold.

I for one am glad that the new cabinet is made up of people like me who didn't have the option to have a private education, but who got where they were by talent and hard work.

If Jacob Rees Mogg had been born Jake Mogg in a council house in the shit bit of Glasgow where I grew up....would he have been an MP or able to form his own multi-million pound hedge fund or whatever it is?

Startingagainandagain · 07/07/2024 12:44

The PM hired the best people for the job: shadow ministers who already knew their briefs or highly qualified and respected outsiders.

No tokenism, no hiring mates or hiring incompetent people just to please a specific fringe of your party...that is how it should be.

Motomum23 · 07/07/2024 12:49

Amazing he managed to pick 11 women when be can't even define one!

daliesque · 07/07/2024 12:50

tennesseewhiskey1 · 06/07/2024 22:18

Is it great tho? They’re just ticking the box - to please everyone - look at us, look how equal we are. I think the best person for the job should get the job, if that looks like an all women cabinet - great. All men. Great. Lisa Nandy, minister of sport the best choice?! Don’t be silly.

Fucking hell. How to insult educated, talented, hard working women. I bet you dare to call your self a feminist?

I think you can safely give it a rest now. He's just shown he knows what a woman is.
