CF renting out our communal parking for Wimbledon!

WarsofWimbledon · 06/07/2024 12:20

I have NC as the location is outing. I live in a block of flats behind Wimbledon as in the tennis courts. I understand they host a large-ish summer event which is happening now.

Street parking has been suspended for the fortnight. Driving in general or trying to go anywhere locally is inadvisable.

This morning my DP alerted me to a large G Wagon in our front parking area which as well as being offensively large (cannot cope with Londoners having massive tanks) is not a resident’s. We can’t rule out that it’s a visitor (and someone did query a strange car last year which turned out to be visiting family (apparently)) but DP has seen people stumbling up the road in their tennis finery and getting into cars.

So we assumed these people were just chancing it - block of flats, hopefully no one notices.

Shortly thereafter I was at my garage about to go out when I woman in a car pulled up and asked me about flat 16’s parking space. She said flat 16 had put their space on Just Park! I said it’s communal - he doesn’t have a space!

DP enquired with our neighbour on the same floor as flat 16 and he thinks it’s a Portuguese guy with an Audi. His car isn’t here but regardless, it is communal parking for residents and visitors. There must be 20 flats and there are 12 parking spaces. Him not using a space does not entitle him to rent it out.

I looked on JustPark and there is a long term bloody listing for a space in our car park with 60 reviews!!! “Great parking for Wimbledon” etc.

Now what? I guess I report to our management agent but do I also take it up with JustPark? Given that there are currently two strange cars I suspect there may be even more renting out going on.

Good for them. You should do the same thing.

yeah lol we all should then we’d all have to park across the entrance and no one could ever leave 🙄

Oh the joys of that area during Wimbledon fortnight. I sympathise op. Can you call the council and ask for the permits?

This fortnight is grim for local residents although by some miracle District Line delays never happen during Wimbledon fortnight.

Prisonbreak · 06/07/2024 17:05

This is genius 😂

EmeraldRoulette · 06/07/2024 17:13

Never sure which is worse.
The CFs or the posters who are too thick to understand what's going on - or think they're being funny for some reason. They don't even NC though that strengthens the argument for an "ignore" button! 😂

OP, I think it's dreadful that the council haven't issued any permits for you. And you have my sympathies. this stuff is really infuriating. I'd be sitting on the Audi (when they return) waiting for a little chat. And I'm heavy 😂

WarsofWimbledon · 06/07/2024 17:13

given the length of time it took the council to collect the rubbish after we reported it I don’t think there’s any point trying to get permits now @RosesAndHellebores

@WarsofWimbledon Wandsworth Council used to be pretty efficient. There has been a change of administration and I imagine that explains the deterioration. No longer well run and presumably becoming more expensive.

WarsofWimbledon · 06/07/2024 17:20

To be fair it is generally good it’s just the last few weeks with the rubbish and now the permits. I will say the tip is very well run.

We used JustPark for Wembley stadium last year. When we got back to the car we were confronted by an angry guy - turned out the grandson of one of the residents was renting out the parking space without permission or knowledge! We felt awful, but there was no way of knowing it wasn’t legit.

"I understand they host a large-ish summer event which is happening now. "

Umm sorry what? Have you never heard of the extremely worldwide-famous Wimbledon Tennis tournament that's broadcast on BBC every year?

Have you been living under a rock?

I think that may be a little tongue in cheek. Your rock clearly blocks irony…

WarsofWimbledon · 06/07/2024 17:22

@BabbleBee people are such dicks! JustPark should be demanding very clear proof of ownership of these spaces.

Just speak to the Managing Agent and they will contact Just Park and have the listing removed. No need for any drama.

Your neighbour is likely very happy with their 'side hustle'

It’s pretty much the first thing everyone said when we moved in and I certainly wouldn’t be averse to hosting a tennis player for a few weeks but this whole “everything for sale” thing is overall just depressing.

We live in Hoylake and cashed in when the British Open golf was held here twice. We rented out our home, along with a few of our neighbours and all went away for the duration of the tournament. I think the problem is that some of the wealthier fans are prepared to pay daft prices and people get greedy.

He may well be, but he’s not making himself any friends if he’s restricting parking for his fellow residents.

I lived on Merton Road and rented my parking space out. We made several thousand pounds doing it. Maybe get in on the action?!

Depending on where you live, it could be in breach of your lease. I live in flats with communal parking, and it is against the management rules for people to do this.

I had issues a few months ago with different people repeatedly parking in my dedicated, numbered space which I assume was due to improper instructions or people unable to follow them. Checking JP showed that a number of spaces on the site were being rented out.

I contacted the property management company and they sent reminders out that renting spaces was not allowed.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 06/07/2024 18:34

I looked on just park to see if anyone near me was renting out a driveway (not really needed as plenty on street parking on good side roads). One place I know who lives there and wouldn't be surprised if members of the owners family had hotwired the car and used it.

TheShellBeach · 06/07/2024 13:10

Jeez, lighten up.
What difference does it make who parks anywhere?
If there's room for you, why are you bothered?
Well done to whoever is making a few quid on Just Park.
😂

Agreed

Lots of just park around airports I'm told

To have the definition of humour, it would need to be funny.

I checked just park and 4 of my flat neighbours are advertised there lol

Luckily we have allocated spaces.

Do you take these things seriously enough to verify in advance that people listing spaces with you do have the full exclusive right to that space - and are not listing a communal/somebody else's space - or do you mean that you expect innocent affected people to contact you, before you will step in after the event?

Would you send a representative out there in person to take charge of what will obviously be a very heated situation - when somebody who has booked via your platform quite reasonably believes that they have legitimately paid for a service; and the actual owner of the space, or the people who have a right to use it and are totally unaware of somebody taking money for renting out their space - or do you just 'do your best' from the safety of your remote internet connection?
