CF renting out our communal parking for Wimbledon!

WarsofWimbledon · 06/07/2024 12:20

I have NC as the location is outing. I live in a block of flats behind Wimbledon as in the tennis courts. I understand they host a large-ish summer event which is happening now.

Street parking has been suspended for the fortnight. Driving in general or trying to go anywhere locally is inadvisable.

This morning my DP alerted me to a large G Wagon in our front parking area which as well as being offensively large (cannot cope with Londoners having massive tanks) is not a resident’s. We can’t rule out that it’s a visitor (and someone did query a strange car last year which turned out to be visiting family (apparently)) but DP has seen people stumbling up the road in their tennis finery and getting into cars.

So we assumed these people were just chancing it - block of flats, hopefully no one notices.

Shortly thereafter I was at my garage about to go out when I woman in a car pulled up and asked me about flat 16’s parking space. She said flat 16 had put their space on Just Park! I said it’s communal - he doesn’t have a space!

DP enquired with our neighbour on the same floor as flat 16 and he thinks it’s a Portuguese guy with an Audi. His car isn’t here but regardless, it is communal parking for residents and visitors. There must be 20 flats and there are 12 parking spaces. Him not using a space does not entitle him to rent it out.

I looked on JustPark and there is a long term bloody listing for a space in our car park with 60 reviews!!! “Great parking for Wimbledon” etc.

Now what? I guess I report to our management agent but do I also take it up with JustPark? Given that there are currently two strange cars I suspect there may be even more renting out going on.

But according to the OP, there are no designated spaces

They are communal spaces for all the residents of the block of flats.
If they are rented out on just park there will be no spaces available at all.

They are designated communal spaces for those who own and/or rent the flats.

Are you always this hard of thinking? 🤦‍♀️

Myblindsaredown · 06/07/2024 14:16

If the listing is removed why report?

WarsofWimbledon · 06/07/2024 14:17

@Myblindsaredown they need to be told not to do this any more so they don’t list it again elsewhere

Yes, it does matter "who parks anywhere" - what a bright and breezy attitude!
The residents complained en masse because our tiny cul-de-sac was crammed on both sides by cheeky buggers who were visiting the nearby hospital, church and supermarket. No room for residents, emergency vehicles and certainly no room on the narrow pavements.

Clamp them and fine them!

Jeez, lighten up.
What difference does it make who parks anywhere?
If there's room for you, why are you bothered?
Well done to whoever is making a few quid on Just Park.
😂

Hmm

Can I come and park on your driveway?
Have a picnic in your garden, and sleep in your bed?

But according to the OP, there are no designated spaces.

Yes, but where they usually park if there's no space in the designated parking for the flats is all no parking for anyone for the fortnight. Are you totally incapable of reading and lacking in empathy?

PoopingAllTheWay · 06/07/2024 15:11

The majority of areas around there are given a temporary parking permit.
Iv lived there for 20 years and always received 4 in the post.

Weird that you living so close to the Tennis, they dont give you all temporary parking permits

graceinspace999 · 06/07/2024 15:23

I’d rent mine out and go away for a nice break. Life’s too short to bother about small things.

It's also too short to answer the ‘what abouts’ that usually follow these comments. 😉

JoBrodie · 06/07/2024 15:27

Also check Google maps. When this happened in our block of flats we ended up with a large 'P' on Google, indicating that our (unmarked, but each space allocated) forecourt was a "parking lot".

Yes, I had them last year

Fortunately not so far

Not likely, I have tickets for the women's semi finals

Complain to your managing agents. That's what they are there for.

"I understand they host a large-ish summer event which is happening now. "

Umm sorry what? Have you never heard of the extremely worldwide-famous Wimbledon Tennis tournament that's broadcast on BBC every year?

Have you been living under a rock?

mumsthewordi · 06/07/2024 15:42

If they park in the right spot - what's the harm? It's hard to make a buck these days

Menora · 06/07/2024 15:42

There are always chancers making a buck off someone else, a lot of rentals you can’t sublet so he might even be breaking his lease.

This guy cant rent out space in a freehold parking lot with no allocated parking and keep the money for himself he doesn’t own it and isn’t entitled to profit from it.

In my case someone was renting out their rented parking space but also another one, without the consent or knowledge of the real owner, frankly they had got cocky thinking the owner would just assume airport parking and confront the driver but the neighbours all got together to investigate and it was listed on just park, and did not belong to this person. If I want to rent MY space out then that is fine, if I legally own it and am able to sub let but this is not the case here for OP. We stopped confronting drivers because they had paid money as a customer but had no idea about the fact the seller was renting space that didn’t belong to them, it wasn’t really their fault.

Maybe read the OP properly. 20 flats and only 12 spaces. That means that none of the spaces are designated to particular flats, so no-one is entitled to rent any of them out - which needs to be the case for Just Park. Especially since this could result in a resident having nowhere to park.

mumsthewordi · 06/07/2024 15:42

If the person renting out doesn’t own the parking space then there is no’ right spot’. 20 flats and only 12 spaces means a resident may be left with nowhere to park. If the flats are leasehold whoever is renting it out isn’t entitled to, or to keep the money for themselves.

She doesn't have one. There are 12 spaces for 20 flats. Not sure how people aren't getting this. They don't have allocated spaces.

pleasehelpwi3 · 06/07/2024 16:00

Good for them. You should do the same thing.

Rosscameasdoody · 06/07/2024 16:04

The last few comments have illustrated perfectly the growing tendency on MN to wade in without reading the OP properly !! 20 flats, 12 spaces. None are allocated to specific flats so no-one is entitled to rent any of them out.

I lived on Merton Road and rented my parking space out. We made several thousand pounds doing it. Maybe get in on the action?!

My aunt lives in Merton Park, her son years ago suggested that she rent out her 4 bed and stay with them during Wimbledon, she'd have made a lot of money.

Exactly. I didn’t even tell the woman parking to eff off. She very clearly thought there was a space for the flat that’s why she gave me the number. Feel bad for her although then again she has left her car here and gone to the tennis so she’s fine.

It’s pretty much the first thing everyone said when we moved in and I certainly wouldn’t be averse to hosting a tennis player for a few weeks but this whole “everything for sale” thing is overall just depressing.
