It’s shit isn’t it?

everything is wet. The sound of the rain on the tent is too loud to sleep.

I am camping with two teenagers as a treat for finishing exams and we leave in the morning. My tent is a 2.5kg three person tent which you can’t stand up in. We won’t have electricity or toilets. There is nowhere in the tent that doesn’t touch the sides. Tell me it will be OK?

Oh no, sounds awful!! 😱😱😱

just don’t do it, find another treat 🤗

A treat? Grin
Man, I wish my teens were this easily pleased!

It’s bad enough in nice weather. Sand or dust in bloody everything. Kids whining. DH constantly saying, “Isn’t this great?” Or “Isn’t this relaxing?”. DH has gone off to show off everything he knows about “tenting” to some poor sap that ‘a just lobbed in from god knows where with their family under the guise of “helping them set up their tent”. Some fucker nearby with a boombox playing thumping bass or reggae music until stupid o’clock, cans and bottles being dumped, screaming kids, dirt bikes, shitty coffee, being expected to cook gourmet food on a single gas burner - or conversely, being expected to eat toasted sandwiches and tinned soup for a week. Bugs. People blaming you - the collective brain - for all the things you forgot to pack. DH blaming you for all the things you packed but didn’t use. (Because you they were probably on the forgotten list last time.) Other people’s kids. Other people’s dogs. Your own kids and dogs. It’s too hot. It’s too cold. Their devices are flat. They miss their friends. Their friends went to Spain and didn’t go stupid camping. You’ve run out of wine day 2 because that was one of the things DH decided you over-packed. Boy, did you show him!

Girl Guides camp aged 10. It was like this weather. No where to cook, the toilet tents were down a hill which flooded.

Hated every minute of it.

MrsStottlemeyer · 06/07/2024 07:41

@Fraaahnces, brilliant 👌

The only way I will camp is to get so drunk I don't care I'm camping, which rules out going with the DC.

llamajohn · 06/07/2024 07:43

Camping is what you make it.

I personally can't be bothered with hauling a massive ten, Yankee, has burners, chairs, half the kitchen, clothes, wellies, food, electric hook ups etc and staying for 7-10 days.

So we camp for a maximum of 2 nights on a bare minimum set up, and we love it. Will have 1 frying pan, one saucepan. 1 knife etc. A bowl each and a spoon for eating, and a thermal mug thing. We eat bacon sandwiches for breakfast, find somewhere for lunch, have a takeaway one night and then might do a really easy pasta and sauce dinner or something. Might do a sausage sizzle depending on what the campsite is like.
Sit on the picnic rug. Don't bother with chairs
.

Suits us just fine!

TheaBrandt · 06/07/2024 07:46

Camped with teens for a festival. Never again. The first night was bitterly cold. Not normally that sensitive to cold but this was next level. Put on every item of clothing I had still lying there shivering. Awful.

missshilling · 06/07/2024 07:47

We started that way but now drag a trailer tent behind us. Proper beds, heating, carpet and running water, all in an insulated tent.

Haha! I agree with this. On the plus side, it may go down in family lore and be more enjoyable in the retelling.

The possibility of rain and the way in which everything is always slightly damp is why I do not camp in the UK. I think it can be done comfortably but it requires at least one, possibility two multi room tents you can stand up in, a gazebo type thing with a groundsheet to store cooking stuff if it rains, an electric hook up, airbeds and camping chairs, plus a stocking great SUV to transport everything. At which point, the whole 'low impact, at one with nature' vibe is completely lost under a sea of polyester and you'd be better off booking a private room at a hostel with heating, and a bed, and a roof and showers.

Brainded · 06/07/2024 07:52

This is why I refuse to go camping anymore…I bloody hate it! It’s grasses a kid when you have nothing to be responsible for but as a parent it sucks…it’s the answer to “how difficult can I make life whilst trying to have a holiday at the same time?!” Bloody ridiculous…I would rather stay home and just have days out or just have one night away in a hotel.

Brainded · 06/07/2024 07:53

It’s great as a kid I mean…

UtterlyOtterly · 06/07/2024 07:54

Imo the most essential thing to take camping is a list of nearby hotels.

Cellotapedispenser · 06/07/2024 07:55

We're going camping at the end of August. Really hope it's dried up a bit by then. We had several bad camping experiences over the years so invested in a much bigger tent with an inside living space you can stand up in and a covered outside space to cook under. That combined with electric hook up and blow up mattresses and it's not completely terrible (as long as there's enough wine). Kids love it so I'll do it once a year til they're too old.

RabbitsRock · 06/07/2024 07:55

Enjoyed camping when I was younger but my back would protest too much these days. We still talk about the time when we camped in the tail end of a hurricane! DH was frantically trying to stop the tent from taking off whilst I snored through the whole thing! 🤣

Vladthecat · 06/07/2024 07:56

Doing an over nighter camp in my roof tent tonight. Up North in Scotland where it’ll probably rain and I’ll have midges to contend with too.

I don’t mind rain at night but it’s grim in the morning when you have to get up and pack everything away.

Why do we do it ?!🤣

Sux2buthen · 06/07/2024 07:56

My son is going on a residential camping in a week or two 🤔I'm having doubts about how fun it will be now

Hummingbird75 · 06/07/2024 08:16

We had a HUGE storm here at 3am (in south west) with gale force winds and torrential rain. I hope op isn't anywhere near here, because I don't know how any tent would stay up in that kind of weather.

It was thunder, lightening, monsoon rain and winds. It woke me up and I am knackered and inside.

Hope she is okay. No battery. So prob no update. Grim!

Curlewwoohoo · 06/07/2024 08:20

My 7yo is away camping with beavers this weekend 😬 It was torrential rain and thunder last night!!! And the forecast is rain rain rain. Such a shame for them. Including the leaders.

YABU because camping is shit generally.

This. And anything communal is 🤢. Just go home op. It's going to be rained out this weekend too.

Katherineryan1986 · 06/07/2024 08:30

If I was you I would go home, get dry and sorted and then have some lovely days out from home instead.

Camping in a tent is a PITA most of the time anyway, nevermind in the rain.

If you can afford it, buy a caravan and you will NEVER go back to a tent again, you will have a dry place, you will have heating, you will have your own little bathroom and you will enjoy it so much more.

User364837 · 06/07/2024 08:31

I like the sound of rain on the tent but yes, no two ways about it it is shit if it’s persistent rain
