It’s shit isn’t it?

everything is wet. The sound of the rain on the tent is too loud to sleep.

I might consider this…

In a different colour maybe.

But by the time you’ve bought all that, packed it, set it all up, pack it away, store it in your house…..why not just stay in a B&B?

This! I will never understand the concept of camping. If you have to take the kitchen sink to make it remotely tolerable, why not just stay in a cottage?

Cost and an availability. We are going away later this month. My sister is paying £1000 a week for her cottage and booked a year ago. I booked our camp site nearby today and it’s costing us £150.

Packed it? Everything is in it. We just attach it to the car and drive off.

The only things we pack are clothes. Presumably you still need to pack clothes if you stay in a b&b?

I love camping and actually love the sound of rain on the tent at night, I find it relaxing🙈 The key is having a good tent though, with plenty of space so you’re not touching the edge, somewhere to sit, and a porch to dry things off.

can’t believe PP is taking a 3 man tent for 3 people - you always need at least one ‘man’ extra for your stuff!

OhmygodDont · 06/07/2024 13:00

This is exactly why we camp big. Electric hook up, with heater, fridge, air fryer. Huge tent and a tv and dvds for wet days only.

GnomeDePlume · 06/07/2024 13:09

I always think the number of people who can 'sleep' in a tent is actually just indicating the number of bodies you could store in a tent. It's a service provided to serial killers.

😂😂😂

like I said, it’s the simplicity- it’s hard to explain to people who don’t get it, but that’s what a lot of campers enjoy about camping. I have at times enjoyed luxury experiences, but I don’t enjoy being ‘pampered’. It feels uncomfortable/embarrassing to me.
We're all different but I'm team simplicity

Whattodo112222 · 06/07/2024 13:20

I'm not even camping.. we're glamping in a wooden pod this weekend. Woke up to puddles of water in our pod as there are leaks in the roof.

Topseyt123 · 06/07/2024 13:45

To me camping is just a bag of shite and in the rain would be even worse.

I don't want to drive for ages to go on holiday only to have to build my own accommodation in the middle of a muddy field. I'd really rather have no holiday at all if that were all I could have.

Yes, I've tried it. Struggling to get the tent up, cooking breakfast in the rain, traipsing across large fields to go to the very grim communal toilets or do the washing up, then back again. Yuck!

I know some people seem to love it, but it is not my bag as I am sure is clear by now.

Toomuch44 · 06/07/2024 13:55

Doesn't really bother me, I've learnt to take an extra pair of shoes and extra socks. I take a blanket anyway for extra warmth and we always take games/books so can chill inside with a hot drink.

I think the thing about camping is that while you may get miserable ,everything is a challenge .I get easily bored and being nice and dry at home contemplating all the cupboard clearing and housework I have to do is more boring than working out how to apply guy ropes and bungees to keep the big tent upright .
It's a rollercoaster of emotions,a distraction from the worries of real life .

Yes, really well explained. I relate to this.

Be a shit serial killer could stack up them dead bodies on those 6man tents you can stand up in 🤣

Probably but a 2/3 man tent is definitely only for non-moving occupancy

for sure one double air bed and it’s full

Similars · 07/07/2024 07:03

I really hope @EyeOop and teens are proving us all wrong and are having a brilliant time. Hoping for an update.

Mysterian · 07/07/2024 09:44

Always take 1 off the number of persons a tent says it's suitable for. My tent is even worse. "4 people" when it's really only good for maybe 2 adults and a dog. I use it on my own.

cakeorwine · 07/07/2024 09:46

We have a ridiculously big tent for when we camp abroad. I think it's 6 people. It has 3 separate areas and a central zone.

DS has his area. I have mine. We use one for storing food. And a lovely central area to just spread out in.

BiddyPop · 07/07/2024 10:36

See, I am so used to the bad weather here that I am used to camping in the rain. Especially for Cub camp - that's at least a 50% chance of rain when packing up and also at least 1 of 2 nights every June. And as the hostel we use in March has limited space (we officially just all fit, but the mix of boys and girls means sometimes not enough rooms for the leaders - and it's a choice of the 3 men or 1 woman taking the 1 room available...so I often end up in my tent outside).

I have a rug, or sometimes just a flattened cardboard box, inside the door and all shoes/boots come off there to stop tracking mud further in. Rain gear comes off there and I hang them dripping onto mat.

I keep a full change of clothes (knickers and bra included), dry shoes and a towel in a bag under the front seat for when packing up is done to drive home in dry things.

But you have to embrace it. I love the sound of the rain on the roof, so different and calming compared to the usual sirens etc. Bring a good book always and a book of sudoku puzzles for peaceful time. A board game and deck of cards for family enjoyment.

I will admit I bought a new tent a couple of years ago with a porch to have cover to cook in on rainy days. That made a big positive difference. And a good sleeping set up so you are well rested also really helps being able to deal with whatever weather and other difficulties that might happen.

TheaBrandt · 07/07/2024 11:34

It is not a normal holiday goal to “build resilience” in your family but to ….have an enjoyable time surely?! Fair enough if you enjoy it but I don’t aim for “character building “ on holiday!

Waitingfordoggo · 07/07/2024 12:57

@TheaBrandt No, of course I wouldn’t take my family on a holiday they didn’t enjoy just to build resilience 😂 It just works out well that something we all enjoy is also quite good for us.

TheaBrandt · 07/07/2024 13:08

We camped for years as kids (albeit soft euro camping) and teens and enjoyed it. Though was disturbed to find the smell of human sewage triggered happy holiday memories for me!
