Working Cocker Spaniel?

Hi, posting here for traffic.

we've recently taken in an 8 month old dog, he's supposed to be a full pedigree Working Cocker Spaniel, however I'm not convinced that he is and now I'm thinking he's going to grow much bigger 🙈 he's seems quite big already and his ears look shorter then other working cocker spaniels I know. What do you all think, aibu to think he's mixed with another breed? We love him either way, I'd just like a heads up if he's going to get much bigger.

He looks like he has some retriever in him to me

I agree. This is/was my families working lockers. And our lab from when I was a kid 😂 I think your dogs face is similar

He definitely has some of the cocker traits, his personality is so much like my friends working cocker, but he also has some traits similar to another friends golden retriever. He's so lovely though and very photogenic I think 😊

His face looks less lab in this photo

UPDATE for those who was interested to see the DNA results.
He is mostly cocker with a little springer and surprisingly with a hint of beagle! So I guess we would call him a sprocker?

There's also some of his relatives shown and looking through those I see the resemblance to a few of the closer ones, even the ones that are full cocker have a very similar shape and coat to our beautiful boy.
I know the dna tests aren't always accurate but still it's interesting to see and it has been rather fun waiting for the results to see what they come back with, the kids have been really excited about it 🥰

I'm still surprised that there is no Lab or Retriever in him, I was certain there would be!

Wow that definitely got lab in there! Can you do a dna test
just seen update lol 😂 I’m shocked no lab
not shocked about being mix breed though

MaryLennoxsScowl · 15/08/2024 14:36

My wcs is 13kg at 5 years old. His breeders were aiming to keep the breed small though as they felt the bigger ones were verging on springers. And he did calm down after he was a year old! He’s very chilled in the house or in the local park; he saves up his bonkers-ness for the beach, the woods or hills. He was so quick to learn, they’re so rewarding to train!

That's step away from this .

Your dog is a mixed breed or mongrel.

Good luck!

My rescue was a darling. Suspected collie x russell cross.

Totally normal unintentional farmyard mating.

She wasn't a trollie or a rollie or whatever else.

She was my darling girl and that's all that matters

Surprising isn't it, I was so sure there would be lab or similar in there!

He's very eager to please and loves learning. He's very stubborn when it comes to leave though but we're getting there ☺️

It's just a bit of fun, he's not loved any less whatever breed or not breed he is ☺️

It's ok I get it. Flowers

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/08/2024 20:50

He may not be any sort of hound cross in recent generations at all..

Not that long ago (couple of hundred years at most), most of our gundogs were some sort of houndy/settery/pointery mix - mostly of british, french and spanish origins. (The retrievers came later, mostly being of american/canadian origin and they have their roots in the mastiffy hefty water dogs like Newfoundlands).

So his 'hound' ancestry may well be a remnant of those origins rather than a distant great grandma actually being a beagle.

Similarly it is not that long back that all the spaniels were pretty much the same breed with regional and family (noblemen having little to do but gamble, hunt, shag and breed dogs) differences/lines.

SpanielintheWorks · 17/08/2024 08:00

I completely misread 'shag and breed dogs' there, WiddlinDiddlin. Relieved to see that you meant something rather different!

And I hadn't thought about 'retrievery' dogs originally being from across the Atlantic, despite the obvious but in a Labrador's name. Are there no European origin retrievers, then?

Oh thank you for this, that's really interesting.

Looking at these older photos, I can see that it's very obvious now that his previous owner had his fur trimmed while at the groomers, his ear fur has grown so it's now just below his actual ears so he's starting to look a little more spaniel like.

Awwww. My favourite dogs

My dear girl was put to sleep on Friday last week after 12.5 wonderful years. She was my heartbeat and we miss her so much. She brought so much joy into our home. I need to post a picture of her

Aww I'm so sorry to hear this, she's absolutely beautiful, those eyes look like she would have gotten away with everything! ❤️

It takes just one look from our boy with those eyes and we can't be mad at him, even if he has just chewed another hole through the throw for the sofa 🥰

@Moon30 yep she certainly had the ability to get away with wrecking the house!!
