Working Cocker Spaniel?

Hi, posting here for traffic.

we've recently taken in an 8 month old dog, he's supposed to be a full pedigree Working Cocker Spaniel, however I'm not convinced that he is and now I'm thinking he's going to grow much bigger 🙈 he's seems quite big already and his ears look shorter then other working cocker spaniels I know. What do you all think, aibu to think he's mixed with another breed? We love him either way, I'd just like a heads up if he's going to get much bigger.

He looks like he has some retriever in him to me

I thought maybe cockador. You can always get a DNA test done.

gettingalife · 05/07/2024 20:28

Mine is female and weights 12kg. Yours looks very muscular which may make him weigh more?

choccytime · 05/07/2024 20:34

Mine is a working cocker . He came from a farm near us and both his mum and dad were working cockers ( we saw both ) . He does look as if he s got maybe a bit of labrador or retreiver his legs look different to my dog . working cockers are a lot bigger than show cockers . But who cares he s gorgeous just love him!

He's very nervous of anything loud, even the tumble dryer, but I'm assuming this may be due to how he lived previously, he hadn't been on a walk before and had never had any training, he lived in flat but he did spend alot of time on a long line lead on the grassed area outside the flats.

Wow no wonder he's hyper! I have a rehome who wasn't being walked, he was super excitable when I first got him - and he was 8!!!

Ah, I didn't know this was even a thing, thank you! It may be worth doing as it would be handy to know if he's mixed with another breed.

@Moon30

he's gorgeous. He's not pure bred working cocker though.

those paws belong to another breed entirely and I'd say another breed involved too. So probably parents not pure bred of their own breed either.

those DNA tests are not very reliable, so you could do one for fun, but I wouldn't put too much weight in it.

he'll be a wonderful surprise as he grows!!

He's gorgeous & with your training I'm sure he'll be a great addition to your family. He's lucky you've taken him in, I'm sure his previous owners (your/DHfamily??) are very grateful.

Aww he's a cutie! He has shorter ears too, but he has the curls, my dog doesn't 🤔 he weighs 17.7kg but he's only 8months old, so I would assume he would still have some growing to do? Yours does look smaller, but difficult to judge on photos.

His ears were trimmed just before that pic as he’d got them all tangled with grass seed. They’re about an inch longer on each side currently. He’s 14kg but his brother is taller and 16kg.

Yours has the distinct cocker breast but facially looks a bit like a retriever. They’re closely related though and he’s still growing. Ours is 4 and has a proper cocker look now. He’s changed a lot since 8 months.

TeenLifeMum · 05/07/2024 20:51

Has he been to a groomer? He actually looks like a much neater version of mine. Paws look like my purebred cocker too so I’m not sure what the other poster is seeing. I know both the parents of mine and the owners and have full family trees of each.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 05/07/2024 20:56

He's gorgeous - whatever he is!.
Doesn't look like working cocker (only my opinion). Previous suggestion of D.N.A. would probably be the best way to settle it for you.
I definitely wouldn't rely on his papers.
Springers and Cockers are nuts!
Enjoy your dog.

He was at the groomers at the weekend but that was with his previous owner so I've no idea if his fur has been clipped, it's possible though I guess, I'll see if I can find out. The fur on his ears don't look freshly cut though.

His legs and paws do look similar shape to another working cocker spaniel that my friend has although he's more petite and is 2 years old, the paws on mine seem to be on the larger size, which makes me think he still has some growing to do?

He is the sweetest, he gets lots of attention while out on walks! He was from a neighbour of a family member, so we can take him to visit him often, he actually went for a visit today and everyone was complimenting dh on how well behaved he was comapred to just a few days ago, he does enjoy the training we've been doing with him 😊

I definitely think a dna test is a good idea, it would be handy to know if he's mixed with anything, so we're aware of any possible health complications in the future. We have a frenchie who has had a few flare ups of ivdd and nievely we didn't do much research into possible health issues before we got her, it would have been good to know what kind of activities we should have avoided with her in the beginning.

The side on picture really looks dachshund-y to me!

Moanranger · 05/07/2024 21:28

The head shape is not typical for a spaniel, they usually have a short brow & rounded head. Yours has a squarer head than is typical & looks like a number of retriever/setter breeds.
If he is a cross, that will be good, reduces the chance of any health problems associated with a purebred & may make him a bit less hyper than a pure working cocker.
He’s very cute!

That was my first thought too. I have a working cocker too, and she has shorter ears, tail and coat than my show cocker. But longer than these. He's lovely (if he's nuts- he's a working cocker) 🤣

Shennie100 · 05/07/2024 21:31

Actually, the next few photos look cocker like.

Oh dachshund hadn't crossed my mind, I see a golden retriever every time I look at him haha I'll have a look at some images of cross dachshund types

He definitely has some of the cocker traits, his personality is so much like my friends working cocker, but he also has some traits similar to another friends golden retriever. He's so lovely though and very photogenic I think 😊

Omg yes that’s a retriever cross. Wisdom panel are good for dna testing, I did it on my dog and my cat. They have a huge database.

Less hyper if he is a cross is definitely something that crossed my mind haha, right now he doesn't stop unless we put him in his crate for some rest, otherwise he will just keep going, even after really long walks, he's still raring to go when we get home and we're knackered 🤣 We're looking forward to getting him off the lead so he can run off some of that energy!

Both are very lovely dogs so I'd be over the moon for him to have both of their traits! 🥰

I'll have a look at Wisdom Panel, thank you!

I've just looked at your side pictures,
Milo my cocker is similar in stature He's around 14.5 kg at just over 12 months.
Large breast/chest bone.
Some pictures to maybe compare?
See what think ??

Edit: can only post 1 pic for some reason ??

He does look very similar in stature and build, Mine has alot shorter fur but we've established that it's possible he's had his fur clipped at the groomers at the weekend. Mine also weighs 17.7kg though but I'll weigh him again tomorrow to double check.

He has the cutest little traits too although some of them may get annoying after a bit haha he picks everything up including mobile phones and he'll carry his blanket around in his mouth with him, he looks so cute carrying it 🥰

I think we can all agree that he's the cutest and sweetest little woofer!
