1 in 4 voters still Tory

After the last 14 years how have they still got so many voters for this election (which was lost long ago)? And that's despite loads of Tories going Reform as a protest. Labour only just over 1 in 3.

They'll be back again for sure. Really is a Tory country.

Presumably they haven't had to use the NHS or go to a GP in the past decade so are unaware of how the Tories have wrecked healthcare... .

We don't have an independent press. Apart from the Guardian, our press is owned by a handful of billionaires. I believe the Daily Heil is Britain's best selling paper.

Imagine voting for 5 more years of this

Exactly this.

It's all those with children at private school who don't want to pay VAT.

‘So many voters’ No! Turnout was horrible.

Even Jeremy Hunt in his speech basically admitted they've spent their time underfunding and dismantling the NHS. He said "hopefully Labour will be able to reform the NHS in the way it's difficult for a conservative government to do"

Amazingly hard to believe isn’t it.

But I know why - as I think I know some!

To some people, that’s ’their tribe’. That’s who they believe in, a bit like following a religion or something. They are Conservatives. That’s how the identify.

They truly believe that these people ideologically offer the best for the country.

Yes I know, even with the torrent of shit that has been the last few years, they believe that they have the best ideological position.

Yes - although.

I think there are a lot of people with a paid-off mortgage for a nice house, no childcare costs, a good pension etc who are quite truthfully really very comfortable.

They probably think things are quite good.

vs someone on an identical or higher income feeling like they’re struggling because of their insanely high mortgage / childcare / commuting costs.

The average retired household has a higher disposable income than the average working household.

Zanatdy · 05/07/2024 15:18

I’m in a safe Tory seat, they did make losses but still won by a fair chunk. I don’t understand why my neighbours are happy with this government

purplesparklydinosaur · 05/07/2024 15:18

First time Tory voter here.

I work in the NHS, I was in an NHS hospital as a patient during the ambulance strikes.

I do not 100% agree with any party, I read the manifestos and the Tory one was the one that made the most sense.

Hugesunflower · 05/07/2024 15:19

Nope, just over 12% of those eligable to both chose to vote conservative so I wouldn’t say 25% of the country are Conservative voters.

But yes, thes things are cyclical so of course they will be in power again at somw point.

Billyandharry · 05/07/2024 15:21

It's depressing how crap do the Tory party have to be before people stop voting for them? The bar is set sooo low for them. Literally what would it take to put people off them/see them as unelectable? I will never forgive them for partying thru lockdown whilst people lived/died alone. Never.

AssortedLabels · 05/07/2024 15:21

I do think a lot of the British public are conservative with a small “c” and that inevitably lends itself to voting Conservative. I’m a Labour voter and I think I’m probably small “c” Conservative on some issues, like law and order.

'1 in 4 voters' though near enough. Not non-voters.

It's probably because most of them ( quite rightly so imo) don't trust Labour either not because they think the conservatives are any good!

That's the thing though they've not even been at all conservative. They've been useless on law and order and border control etc and hence lost a lot of votes to Reform/Labour.

But they still have so many voters for 5 more years of the same.

I worked for the NHS under labour ,it was shit than too ,what it really needs is a complete overhaul and cross party support but I can't see that happening or labour doing much other than tinkering with it.

Not really! More a case of better the devil you know! Because let's be real Labour will turn out just as much of a shit show over the next four years! The tories are openly grasping and self serving whereas Labour try to hide it!

Which may explain low voter turnout/reform doing well.

Better the devil you know is hardly a thing if the devil we know has completely wrecked the country.

Jesus Christ, are these the only options we have?

WiseBiscuit · 05/07/2024 15:30

Historically yes, this country has been Conservative for far more of modern history than it has ever been Labour and that isn’t likely to ever change.

We have Labour blips every now and then before Conservatives are restored. That’s just how it is. It’s not exactly a surprise.
