“Today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner”

Was their ever any doubt? Why say it? Was it a dig at Gordon Brown?

I just find it jarring.

Island? What about Northern Ireland?

you are right, I apologize. I thought island read well and had the right connotations, but not accurate

I think the constant call for people to be perfect is really damaging. Sunak can have failed to address racism effectively AND have given a really dignified speech.
We keep constantly running to the extremes of tribalism.
Time for a return to moderate decency

HoppingPavlova · 05/07/2024 14:39

Well since it didn’t need saying and was a given I’d rather he didn’t say it, wouldn’t that have been the most gracious way

It did need saying as it’s in no way a given these days anywhere really.

Are you someone that is serially offended?

Topseyt123 · 05/07/2024 14:40

Don't be ridiculous.

It was a very respectful and dignified speech. He was defeated and he knew and accepted it. Not jarring at all.

Sunak and Starmer were both respectful of each other. There was no undignified snarking. Stop looking for things to take offence at.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/07/2024 14:48

I thought he spoke very well. I voted LD in a Tory/LD constituency (Labour always far behind) but I did still feel for Sunak, since nearly all of the shitshow that caused the Tory wipeout was down to Boris and Truss.* Some TV commentator earlier said Sunak was ‘the worst Tory leader ever’ - WTF?? I found that comment very mean and grossly unfair.

*not to mention Cameron/Brexit earlier, of course.

IHaveNeverLivedatTheCastle · 05/07/2024 14:49

Or France?

Meant to quote about dig at France. I doubt France will be orderly next week.

Goldenbear · 05/07/2024 14:54

I thought it was a good speech and well delivered considering how intense the whole situation must be for the leaving PM! I don’t thing a dig but more highlighting the importance of democracy and civility.

BMW6 · 05/07/2024 14:54

Well I appreciate his speech and doubt that hundreds of disgruntled Conservative voters will be rioting rallying in London, denying Democracy and clashing with Police as happened in 2019.......

He has highlighted the differences between how we can conduct ourselves in UK compared to other countries.

Try to grow up OP.

Justcallmebebes · 05/07/2024 14:56

JustPleachy · 05/07/2024 12:23

It’s relevant because the debacle Trump caused is a dangerous president, and therefore good to condemn it on the world stage and show that there is a better way. Also because the US system is, in large part, modelled on the U.K. system.

Eh? The US political system is not modelled on the UK system at all, its vastly different

5128gap · 05/07/2024 14:58

It was a pretty speech, pitched well to appeal to our national love of a bit of mea culpa and a dollop of gentlemanly grace in defeat. Well done to whoever wrote it and to Sunak for his performance.

crochetmonkey74 · 05/07/2024 15:00

Totally agree
Isn't it a stark contrast to see Mordaunt, Hunt, Shapps, Sunak and Starmer all talking about decent public service and calmness - we are going to need to live this, not just pay it lip service if we are going to work to halt the growth of the far right. I personally am glad to see it. One of the scariest things I have heard was on a political podcast about the Democrats being unable to replace Biden in part due to not having enough time for the media to pull them apart and for time to pass to make them palatable again. Terrifying that media and social media have that kind of real life sway. Talk about straw man villains

WindsurfingDreams · 05/07/2024 15:03

I found it incredibly problematic to have a member of the global plutocracy (albeit by marriage) in government never mind as PM and I thought his election campaign was dire, but this speech struck the right note

It's a dig at Trump to demonstate that this is how grownups deal with electoral defeat. It was a good thing.

That didn't occur to me at the time - despite the emphasis on Britishness in that speech - but if it was it was well-placed.

I appreciated the admirable absence of emotion or hand-wringing which made a welcome change from most of today's politicians.

I voted for an independent candidate. Had she not been standing I would, for the first time in my life, have spoiled my ballot paper. I genuinely feel I have no horse in this race: the two mainstream parties are currently both awful in their different ways and the radical change they promise at every general election never materializes.

The big ideas some have of Labour - that they'll ride in on their white horses and 'rescue' education and the NHS from certain death - can't be anything but naive. As one who works in one of those sectors most badly decimated by 14 years of Tory rule, I have to say I don't have much cause for optimism or feel better or worse about this result than I did yesterday. Fixing this mess is going to take a lot more than a change of government.

But, unlike most else of what he can be said to have achieved, Sunak's valedictory speech hit the right note.

Yes, I heard that on the radio and it does appear to be a massive interference in democracy.

His speech in Swindon was excellent.

I dont say this often but I was proud of Swindon

Zanatdy · 05/07/2024 15:07

I thought his speech was dignified and respectful to the new PM. It’s a shame it’s not Boris up there apologising to the nation

swimsong · 05/07/2024 15:08

Mojodojocasahous · 05/07/2024 12:28

I liked it. Very dignified.
I also liked him pointing out how ordinary it was that he had become the first Asian prime minister - his grandparents being immigrants - defo a dig at the fucking awful reform party

It's the elephant in the room that many in this country would never vote for someone of Indian heritage.

Fungkew · 05/07/2024 15:10

It is all such a bunch of phoney baloney from bottom to top anyway.
Most of these MPs are career politicians with no real life experience. The ones that advocate for the redistribution of wealth blah blah blah are multi millionaires or will be when they quit office and write a book.
They are all, without fail, essentially conservative and they do not practise what they preach.
We’re heading really quickly towards a communist state; you won’t own anything in 20 years time because it will all be far too bloody expensive. Good luck if you continue to live in Britain!!!

TriesNotToBeCynical · 05/07/2024 15:12

HowIrresponsible · 05/07/2024 12:25

How is Palestine relevant to our Island? A non state who elected a proscribed terrorist organisation to government in 2006.

And yet people think it's relevant in our election.

Perhaps they've all forgotten we're no longer a colonial power and there is literally fuck all we can do about the middle East. We have no influence and haven't for decades.

A bit of a contradiction there. They are a captive population, with no citizenship of anywhere, in a non-state - so how can the elect a 'government'`? Twenty years ago (when Hamas was not proscribed) the occupying power manipulate them into voting for Hamas to administer the prison camp as a bit of divide and rule against the PLO. There has been no election for a generation and the occupying power has controlled their borders and not allowed them any international status since.

Even if we have no international power we could at least stop selling weapons of genocide to Israel, and express a tiny bit of doubt about what they are doing.

extreme, scaremongering, asserting your theory as though it were provable scientific fact. Not a moderate or thoughtful response

Exactly the problem

WTF

In what way is the use of the comparison to an Orangutan pertinent?

Are you just being a common or garden Racist Fucker?

I'd have thought it was more about like what we saw with America and Trump the other year.
Saying that we're not stooping to "It's A Fix, stop the count!" tactics and they'll bow out gracefully.
