“Today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner”

Was their ever any doubt? Why say it? Was it a dig at Gordon Brown?

I just find it jarring.

I liked it. Very dignified.
I also liked him pointing out how ordinary it was that he had become the first Asian prime minister - his grandparents being immigrants - defo a dig at the fucking awful reform party

ToWhitToWhoo · 05/07/2024 12:33

It wouldn't be a dig at Brown. Probably Trump. Not a Sunak fan, but he was very dignified in defeat.

Emmanuelll · 05/07/2024 12:36

If it's a dig at Trump then that's the best thing he's done.

It is beyond the pale that someone like Trump can run for office after his despicable behaviour, last time.

Americans need to take a long hard look at themselves.

AlwaysFreezing · 05/07/2024 12:36

I'm no fan, but I thought he was incredibly gracious.

Uricon2 · 05/07/2024 12:36

Socialist but thought the speech was fine. Given the fact his predecessor as PM left the platform at her count without speaking, I'm not going to have a go at him for being polite and gracious.

Was it not because of America and the insurrection ?
He's admitted defeat and wished Keir Starmer well ,at least he's not demanding recounts, and calling it a fraud unlike Donsld Trump .

Wakeywake · 05/07/2024 12:43

He was just graciously conceding defeat, you're reading too much into it. I don't even think it was a dig at Trump in particular, if we are to look at the Brexit and Scottish independence referenda, they were followed by endless debates and feelings of discontent.

NasiDagang · 05/07/2024 12:44

He's a twat and I'm glad he's gone.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 05/07/2024 12:48

Ffs really? REALLY?! Why on earth are you offended with that? Would you rather him scream and shout or something? What are you looking to be offended about? What’s the issue? The guy can’t fucking win.

honeylulu · 05/07/2024 12:49

I thought he was gracious and dignified.
I didn't take the "orderly" comment as a dig at anyone, though (in hindsight) if it was it must have been meaning the Trump riots. I thought he was just saying we are all grown ups and there is a process to follow and we will do it respectfully to one another.

Also a complete contrast to Boris Johnson's outgoing speech which might as well have said I've had enough of this bollocks anyway so fuck the lot of you.

Teddleshon · 05/07/2024 12:54

I thought it was a very dignified and gracious speech. It’s a shame more countries aren’t willing to learn from the way democracy works in countries like the UK.

tuvamoodyson · 05/07/2024 12:55

He’s a Tory…like any other man, he can do nothing right on this site.

HowIrresponsible · 05/07/2024 12:25

How is Palestine relevant to our Island? A non state who elected a proscribed terrorist organisation to government in 2006.

And yet people think it's relevant in our election.

Perhaps they've all forgotten we're no longer a colonial power and there is literally fuck all we can do about the middle East. We have no influence and haven't for decades.

Because our "little island" is the one who helped create that mess if you would care to study a little bit of history.

And lest we forget, Gandhi and Nelson Mandela were also considered terrorists but all fine now with a little whitewashing, hey.

And "fuck all we can do"? We supply arms and provide cover at the ICC, ICJ and the UN so i would say we do a little more than "fuck all"

He's a twat and I'm glad he's gone.

I hope you feel better for being so rude. You obviously have had a rough life! What a stupid, pathetic thing to say!

Confusedbythistreat · 05/07/2024 12:56

Lol looks like no one agrees with you apart from one rude poster. It was very dignified and gracious.

Caththegreat · 05/07/2024 12:57

U think this is a sensible island ??,,its quite a cruel place made worse by people not admitting how cruel it is

WildFlowerBees · 05/07/2024 12:58

I found his speech irritating, if he had listened and read the room a long time ago he probably wouldn't be apologising and being all heartfelt. He didn't put anyone's best interests at heart except his own. It's so frustrating that a government that is meant to apparently work for the greater good are a bunch of self serving idiots who are shockingly unaware.

For someone who has got such a lot wrong, I thought he got his leaving speech right.

Agree - I'm far from a Sunak fan, I was pleasantly surprised at his speech. He left like a gentleman on good terms

SonicTheHodgeheg · 05/07/2024 12:59

Having read some of the replies I have to agree that it’s not a dig- he’s saying that Conservative voters aren’t going to riot over the results because they are good people.

Yes. He was almost likeable.

Moonopoly · 05/07/2024 13:02

I think it was at Trump and to put a marker between the Conservatives and Reform around ‘fairness’ of the electoral system (whether you agree with FPTP or not that is the system we have)

LazyGewl · 05/07/2024 13:03

Whatafustercluck · 05/07/2024 12:27

This. I thought his speech was dignified and respectful of both his opposition and the will of the electorate. He's setting a tone for a more serious, stable era of politics I think. Lord knows we need it after what went before, and what's happening here in Europe and across the Atlantic.

I thought Hunt's speech was good, too and seemed to nod to needing unity now in the UK after all the division.

I voted Labour, by the way, and I've never voted Tory in my life. Sunak was the best of a very bad bunch.

we don’t talk enough about how Boris Johnson changed and damaged British politics and society.

Farage and his mob need to be stopped in their tracks. His speech sounded like a threat.

Scottishgirl85 · 05/07/2024 13:03

It was a lesson to the world, great speech. I'm very proud to be British.

Yes Sad

crochetmonkey74 · 05/07/2024 13:04

long time Labour supporter here and I've been impressed by the dignified and calm speeches of Sunak and Hunt

This is what we need - I think the rise of Reform has worried people - dangerous culture wars rhetoric will take us all into a very dark far right place ALL parties must remind people of calm kind respect
