To not want floor wipes in same bag as cakes and ice cream

Engagebrain · 04/07/2024 18:41

Received my Ocado delivery today and my citrus floor wipes were in the same carrier bag as my cakes and ice cream. One of the floor wipes pack was leaking slightly. Although nothing was ruined I was charged for 7 carriers and there were only 6. Had there been 7 the wipes would have been in a separate carrier. Should I complain or shut up and stop moaning?

@Wonderwoman98

Ah just seen you've edited your post and my comment makes no sense😆

Can't believe all the posters who are happy to have cleaning materials packed in the same bag as food items. When I'm packing my shopping I have a separate bag for eg washing up liquid, soap, wipes etc. Doesn't everyone?

People were actively disinfecting their shopping as it arrived a few years ago. Some still are.

No I don't pack cleaning items in a separate bag, but I do pack anything that's not packaged (loose fruit and veg etc) into a separate bag.

Complain to customer service that the cake was open and that the floor wipes were leaking and that you were charged for a bag you didn't get (though I'm charged a flat fee regardless of how many bags). Open or damaged packaging is not acceptable. Or you could have just refused the delivery of those items (if you caught it at the time). I think they normally do separate these kind of items, though I hate it when it's one item in one bag.

fleabites · 04/07/2024 19:33

I don't get why people are all saying they'd be fine with this. The cream cakes box was damaged. The floor wipes were leaking. The floor wipes and other cleaning items should be packed separately from food items such as cream cakes, fruit and vegetables etc. I don't pack cleaning materials in bags with food items because they could leak.
Who the hell wants to eat cream cakes that have had floor wipe juice on them? And I think the OP should ask for a refund for the cream cakes if they are inedible because the box was squashed. Ocado should make sure they pack things properly so they aren't damaged.

I had problems with a pet store delivery company who kept sending stuff in cardboard boxes which weren't fit for purpose because they got bashed in transit and a couple of times dry cat food bags were ripped inside and the food was everywhere. I messaged them saying look, I don't want a refund but just wanted to make you aware that the cardboard boxes are being damaged in transit. They sent me a refund anyway which was nice and they've now changed the cardboard boxes to sturdier ones.
So in a way, if you do contact them and say what has happened you are helping them to improve the service for everyone.

Needmorelego · 04/07/2024 19:37

@QuillBill Iceland do a "packing fee" rather than per bag.
Some stuff - like a giant pack of loo rolls - they don't put in a bag.

FlyingHorses · 04/07/2024 19:37

Totally understand you @Engagebrain I had a bottle of bleach in with food items once and it leaked onto other stuff. I sent photos and got a refund for the inedible items as well as the bleach. Put me off online food shops!
All those commenting about how frivolous it is to worry about these sorts of things clearly have zero clue how debilitating anxiety can be, especially when dealing with cancer. Take care of yourself OP 🌷

Girlwithapple · 04/07/2024 19:41

OP I'm totally with you. I use sainsburys rather than ocado but have stopped getting cleaning products delivered with my online shop now. I've had 2 incidents of having washing machine cleaner and also drain unblocker balanced on top of loose veg, cauliflower etc. The bottles were lying on their side and were leaking all over the food ....

We decided to take this down as it is not in the spirit of the site.

Choochoo21 · 04/07/2024 19:43

I personally don’t pack cleaning products and food together but it’s not something I would even think to complain about.

Perhaps ask that they’re packed separately next time and if it happens again then go with someone else or shop in person.

Andwegoroundagain · 04/07/2024 19:49

It's not unreasonable to ask for a refund on any damaged items and also any items the damaged item damaged. So the other items in the bag. I also wouldn't want to eat something that had been covered in cleaning products (unless it was packaged such that it was not in contact with the food itseld)

But I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to pack everything in separate bags. Because where does it stop? What about liquids or alcohol for example? So I think just there's a risk to getting delivery which is that occasionally things get damaged. Request a refund job done

Needmorelego · 04/07/2024 18:46

You should order from Iceland instead. They don't charge for individual bags.

No they just charge £1.30 so 13 Ocado bags so swings and roundabouts really

Needmorelego · 04/07/2024 19:52

@butterfliesandrainbows2022 yes but the OP was complaining she was charged for 13 bags but only got 12.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/07/2024 18:58

I am baffled with some of the responses - are people really saying they would be happy if lemon floor cleaner had leaked from the wipes onto their food?

It is pure common sense to pack food items and non food items separately from each other, isn’t it?

To be honest, I don't assume the outside of an ice cream tub thats come from a supermarket is going to be particularly clean anyway. So if it was still sealed but had something on the outside I'd just wipe it off.

If the cake packet was damaged to the extent it was open, I'd probably send it back regardless of the cleaning stuff leaking.

WednesdayWeWearPink · 04/07/2024 19:55

Ocado often get the number of bags wrong. I always count and get a refund for the missing bags. I know it’s just 10p a bag but it does add up.

They do! I just go by what my receipt says. Today I had 7 bags but my receipt said 13 bags. I wrote 13 on my bag of bags for next week.

I have brain cancer and I don't want to get sick from ingesting liquid from floor wipes. I also think other people wouldn't want to ingest floor wipes?

Adding the bit about brain cancer after is a bit harsh. However… am pretty sure even if you did somehow ingest the liquid which is highly unlikely unless you licked the bag, it won’t harm you!

pandasorous · 04/07/2024 20:03

@Engagebrain hi OP you can request a refund for both the broken pack of icecream and the floor wipes (they refund for broken packaging/crushed items).
they usually pack quite generously as you can return the carrier bags and they then refund you the price of the bags.
the inside of the bags are actually filthy. if you are undergoing chemotherapy and are immunosuppressed, I would disinfect your shopping. I do this as I am immunosuppressed.

I'd love to be able to shop in person but I have a terminal illness so it isn't an option.

Dguu6u · 04/07/2024 20:06

Yes, of course complain - they shouldn't put any cleaning stuff in with food, it can affect smell and taste and obviously you wouldn't want it leaking on anything. Ignore anyone on here who thinks this is over the top, very simple minded people. Ocado usually has very good customer service who will be understanding.

Thedayb4youcame · 04/07/2024 20:07

Not the point I know, but exactly four years ago some people were dousing their shopping in cleaning products and disinfectants. How times change.

unsync · 04/07/2024 20:11

I always send an email when there's something not quite right. Apparently the feedback they get on things like this, helps with the packing robot programming.

Ignore the snark, some people make themselves feel better by behaving badly towards others. It's rather pitiful.

Ginkypig · 04/07/2024 20:14

The issue isn’t that they were all in the same bag together. In my opinion that probably wouldn’t warrant a complaint

the actual issue is

you were delivered three items in a bag and two of them were damaged which meant that a non edible chemical has leaked onto a food item that had a box which was also damaged.
that deserves a complaint and a refund for both items. You were also charged for a bag you didn’t receive which I’d mention because I was complaining anyway although I wouldn’t complain about that alone.

Screamingabdabz · 04/07/2024 20:16

Ignore the low-standard dipsticks on here op. You’re 💯% right.

Irrespective of your health, no supermarket should be packing cleaning products with food. Even if the packaging is intact there can be a taint. I would’ve refused them and sent a stinking email.

The people who pack should know how bags should be packed so things don’t get bashed, bruised or tainted. It doesn’t make their job any harder to actually give a shit about what they’re doing but they couldn’t be bothered. That’s why I’d complain. Management should be aware of such sloppy customer service. Especially with Ocado prices!
