Voting in an hour - tell me why I shouldn’t vote reform

This isn’t a wind up. I’ve done countless different quiz type things and the policies I most align to come out strongly reform. I would previously have been a Tory voter. I don’t like farage and I do feel prejudiced against reform from what is portrayed in the media - but their policies appeal to me. Anyone have any actual facts or glaring holes that I might have missed?

A standing candidate (Ian Gribbin) said all of the below and was not booted out of the party. Can you really vote for a party that doesn't condemn this from someone who might represent them in parliament? Really?

His comments:

"Do you (women) think you could actually work and pay for it all too like good citizens?

"Men pay 80% of tax – women spend 80% of tax revenue. On aggregate as a group you only take from society.
"Less complaining please from the 'sponging gender'."

He added that women are "subsidised by men to merely breath (sic)".
In January 2022 he posted: "Men pay 80% of tax. Women take out 80% of expenditures.

"Square that inequality first by depriving women of healthcare until their life expectancies are the same as men, Fair’s fair."

In December 2021 he wrote female soldiers "almost made me wretch (sic)" and were a "total liability".'

It's madness that any woman would vote for that candidate.

They are racist, sexist, homophobic wankers.

This.

You don't want to vote for them because you aren't a dickhead.

Ereyraa · 04/07/2024 08:53

You can vote for anyone you want, that’s the beauty of democracy.

When will the you must vote for X posters realise being told who to vote for has the opposite effect.

Edited

Well it's pretty pathetic to vote for the opposite party just because someone tells you to vote for a particular party. At least have the guts to stick to your beliefs and values and tune out the noise.

@HebburnPokemon what do they say about women’s rights? I hadn’t seen anything, so really do want to be educated. I approve of their stance on transgender ideology being banned in schools and women’s safe places?

For this policy alone:

"Reform will change the definition of a hate crime to raise the threshold needed to trigger an investigation".

Every other party is proposing to include misogyny as a hate crime, reform want to get rid of many. If that's not anti women I don't know what is. That, along with removing us from the European convention of human rights should make anyone who isn't a white male very very scared

LadyVanDijk · 04/07/2024 09:27

There is a significant shortage of teachers, schools are literally falling down, children with SEN are not getting even a fraction of the support they are entitled to, and Reform’s number one education policy is to introduce “a patriotic curriculum in primary and secondary schools” where “any teaching about British or European imperialism or slavery must be paired with the teaching of a non-European occurrence of the same to ensure balance.”

If that’s your priority for education as well, then vote away.

User135644 · 04/07/2024 09:28

You can vote for them as a protest if you wish, but their polices are pie in the sky and unworkable. You may as well vote for the return of Truss.

alldayeveryday247 · 04/07/2024 09:28

It's madness that any woman would vote for that candidate.

Isn't it just. And even for people voting outside of his constituency, voting for reform means you're voting for a party that hasn't kicked out this member.

If he had said those things about a particular race, would people think it was ok for a party to keep him on their books and have him potentially represent them in parliament?

Maybe they would.

It's so depressing to see women think so little of their own sex that they would vote for a party that supports someone so overtly (and aggressively) sexist.

His words aren't those of someone clumsily expressing themselves. He hates women. The vitriol and contempt for us drips from his words.

He believes he subsidises us to 'merely breathe'.

Men like him are dangerous on an individual level. Men like him are terrifyingly dangerous when in positions of power.

It's hard to see what is appealing about all that.

You vote what you want to vote. Voting Reform is fine - we need something to balance out labour.

It’s lazy to say reform are racist - the reform candidate in my area isn’t British

just do it

"It’s lazy to say reform are racist - the reform candidate in my area isn’t British"

How can they stand then? Don't you have to be British or Irish to stand as a candidate in a UK Parliamentary General Election?

Pelham678 · 04/07/2024 09:31

BorgQueen · 04/07/2024 08:56

For clarity I’m not voting Reform -
if they are so awful, why have I seen Black people, a big group of Sikhs and plenty of Women campaigning for them?

Also, lots of people agree with the death penalty.

Lots of people vote against their interests. Partly because they don't understand the implications, partly because of their internalised misogynism, racism, etc, - even immigrants can be against the idea of other immigrants - my father was an immigrant and was terribly racist!

Yes you do.
Maybe the poster meant they're not white so can't possibly be British?
Disclaimer - not my view!

"It’s lazy to say reform are racist - the reform candidate in my area isn’t British"

I've got a horrible feeling that you mean they aren't white, because they have to be a British or ROI citizen to be a candidate.

NCfor24 · 04/07/2024 09:34

MammaMiaPizzeria · 04/07/2024 08:46

You might like their policies but they have absolutely no way of actually making their policies happen. They're not to be taken seriously.

Didn't Farage essentially say this the other night?

Commonwealth citizens can stand as MP's:

Who is eligible to stand as an MP in the UK?

Restrictions and Requirements

You'll need to: be over 18 years of age. be a UK, Republic of Ireland or Commonwealth citizen.

First They Came – by Pastor Martin Niemöller

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Lots of women vote for Trump despite him being demonstrably sexist (grab em by the pussy), accused of sexual assault by at least 25 women and happy to limit or remove their reproductive rights. Does that mean that he isn't sexist?

if you cant do your research and vote for the people with the less fucked up views then you shouldn't vote at all. You are obviously being swayed.

Harrumphhhh · 04/07/2024 09:04

(Not for the first time) I feel like MN is a whole different world to the one I live in. In real life, I don’t know anyone who would consider voting Reform. The candidate came into my school as part of a sixth form hustings and could barely form sentences, let alone explain policies. They’re literally a laughing stock.

Yet on MN, reform seems like a valid option? Is there really a risk from them?

They are not. All parties have campaigning budgets and some of it will be spent online. Reform also won’t be subject to the same campaigning rules as actual political parties. They will have a strong social media operation (they are owned and backed by rich uber-capitalists). They are also supported by Russia so will have a significant bot operation in place.

The real worry is not this election, it’s using tactics such as supporting Andrew Tate to appeal to young white disaffected males who are too young to vote this time around but will be ready next time.

The strategy is to blame poor foreigners for the state the country in, rather than blame the affects of uber-capitalism, plundering and Brexit. This will be done in parallel with aligning with ‘strong men’ to show that to be a winner, you need to be a dick and hateful. The bots will also be in gaming chat rooms chatting shit to influence them.

They are playing the long game.

Zimunya · 04/07/2024 09:35

@BeachParty and @alldayeveryday247 - yes, that was my initial take, but I thought that couldn't be right. If so, it's somewhat ironic that someone defending Reform against racist claims has just been totally racist and not even realised it.

alldayeveryday247 · 04/07/2024 09:35

@TheNoonBell

I'd be interested in that poster confirming then if they are referring to someone who isn't British but is a commonwealth citizen.

I doubt it, unfortunately.

Hummingbird75 · 04/07/2024 09:36

Vote for yourself and preserve your own human rights, and that of your dds and vote for the only party that recognises you are woman.

Do not let the other parties take women back to the dark ages.

The end.

Many of the people they have put up on TV are not very bright. They have sacked or disowned a few people already because they are tending to be more extreme.
For a year or two they will be embarrassingly weak in explaining how they intend to progress.
Do they have many women on their team? I don't see many. Maybe you could become an influencer for them, a sane voice that explains without hatred.
