To go abroad for one day?

Teacherbee85 · 02/07/2024 19:32

I'm reading about people who do 'extreme day trips' from the UK to abroad.

I've been looking into it and I've found flights that go to various European cities - leaving first thing in the morning and coming back late at night.

I'm so tempted to say fuck it and just book a solo trip.

Any thoughts?

Do it! Why not? If you don't have to pay for a hotel you can splash out on other touristy stuff. If you can time the flights right, just sleep then.

Coffeeandcinnamonbuns · 02/07/2024 19:38

Do it! It would take less time to go to Amsterdam than to travel from London to Manchester.

thistimelastweek · 02/07/2024 19:38

Why not?

Easyjet is just like a bus.

The timings are more relevant than the mode of transport.

Shit, I just remembered the eco argument.

So , logistically why not? But maybe not for the environment.

GoneFishingToday · 02/07/2024 19:39

Personally I wouldn't bother OP, it is absolutely exhausting, and you really don't get that much time where ever you go, but obviously if you're keen, then go and see for yourself.

iamtheblcksheep · 02/07/2024 19:40

Do your research. Some of the airports are miles from where you think you’re going

The tiredness does worry me but would love to do one personally

cointos · 02/07/2024 19:42

I've only ever done it for one night rather than one day but I don't live next door to an airport and I'm the type to arrive 3 hours early 🤣

NuffSaidSam · 02/07/2024 19:42

Environmentally it's not good.

I'd rather pay for a hotel and stay a few days and actually see the place I was going. You won't see much in a day.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 02/07/2024 19:43

I did the Dublin dash, first flight out last back, last year from Midlands cheaper fare than a London train trip. Enjoyed it

Anotherflaminggalah · 02/07/2024 19:43

Following! Sounds amazing!!

Sunnydiary · 02/07/2024 19:44

Do it!

I did a day trip to Turin and it was amazing.

JMKid · 02/07/2024 19:45

I’m off to Edinburgh for the day, I’m down south. Flights leave at 8 and then just before 8. Got 1 tour booked then the rest will be a wonder around at leisure. Will defo be booking more.

Theimpossiblegirl · 02/07/2024 19:45

I've done a few from Bristol. It's great fun.

It's still a return flight whether you stay 12 hours or 2 weeks.

helpfulperson · 02/07/2024 19:47

Amsterdam would be good if flights from your local airport work. 20 mins by train to the centre. You could do a museum, lunch, boat trip, people watching in a cafe quite easily in one day.

Of course. I don't think anyone thought otherwise.

Jk987 · 02/07/2024 19:48

Do it once and see how you go! Don't wait for mumsnet to approve!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 02/07/2024 19:49

My sister did Venice, Prague (with one of our SILs) and Monte Carlo - she had great fun.

I think her trips were done through a travel company.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 02/07/2024 19:50

I follow the Facebook group extreme day trips and I’m really keen to do it but maybe one overnight stay. It’s just bagging the cheap flights! Not found any bargains from Gatwick yet!

Jk987 · 02/07/2024 19:50

@NuffSaidSam I was making the point that it's no better or worse environmentally, especially for a one off trip.

SeismicSalad · 02/07/2024 19:51

Sounds awful to me, but each to their own! If on a budget, I’d rather crash in a youth hostel for a night or 2 and have time to see a bit.

It has an impact if it means people flying more and not less. We need to be reducing air travel.

For a one-off trip it's the same of course.

But using planes for multiple day trips is of course worse for the environment than one two week holiday. It's worth bearing in mind.

budgiegirl · 02/07/2024 19:56

I would if flights were more reliable. Having just done two easyJet flights (not on the same day) and both being delayed by 3 hours, I probably wouldn't risk doing it for one day. That would be a total of 9 hours sitting around an airport.

I would do it for one night though. My DS flew to Amsterdam yesterday morning, had a wander around the city, went to a concert last evening, stayed in a basic but decent enough hotel, then flew back in time for a late lunch today. He had a great time.

perhapsatea · 02/07/2024 20:02

Do it! It's one day in your life. If you have delays and a horrible time you'll know not to do it again! Why think negatively, it could be brilliant!

I used to do one day European site trips for work - being 'tired/exhausted' isn't the memory that sticks. Go for it!
