To go abroad for one day?

Teacherbee85 · 02/07/2024 19:32

I'm reading about people who do 'extreme day trips' from the UK to abroad.

I've been looking into it and I've found flights that go to various European cities - leaving first thing in the morning and coming back late at night.

I'm so tempted to say fuck it and just book a solo trip.

Any thoughts?

personally id like to , its just having enough zzzz to enjoy the trip

Pre-Covid I used to have a day in Dublin quite often, flying out from Birmingham on the first Ryanair flight and then leaving Dublin around 9pm. A return flight would often cost less than £20.

Funnily enough me and our adult son were talking about this last night, I said I’d got out of the habit of travelling anywhere in the last few years so we said we’d have a Dublin day soon.

Eurostar to Paris, Lille or Brussels would be easily doable in a day and more environmentally friendly.

Personally I wouldn't want to do a day trip though. I'd want to stay at least one night so I could see the city at night and wake up in the morning and enjoy a nice fresh pastry.

Only if you live in the south east of England

I'd do it, but probably only if I lived near an airport, and I would probably stay one night, for loads of reasons (delays and flight changes being one, getting the proper experience the other) I get all the comments about climate change, but the flight is going anyway tbh, and if you are not going, someone else will. These things need to be changed at the core, not around the fringes of personal choice. I am sure the OP was asking if it would be an adventure worth enjoying, not a hefty debate on the rights and wrongs of flying. (mind i do add that Wizzair recently changed my flight to depart 32 hours ( I know ! ) after it was meant to, I coped but beware that you could have been coming back before you went, so to speak, or you could have had a sudden extended stay that you did not intend...) Bon Voyage. x

Re Wizzair it is definitely with looking at the flight history on Flughtradar. Wizzair is notoriously unrealiable A friend took a flight from Gatwick to Rome this week (not a day trip ) and was marvelling at how cheap it was. I had looked it up and saw that it was always delayed, sometime by several
jours song on one day was diverted to Pescara, a couple of hours drive away.
If she had been going for a day I would have told her, but luckily here was only delayed by an hour.
Would not risk Wizzsir for a day trip.

Many years ago I went on a day trip to Iceland, we left Birmingham very early to fly there and had time for a coach trip looking at volcanic areas and a swim in The Blue Lagoon, followed by an afternoon wandering around Reykjavik before an early supper then the flight back. It was a brilliant experience!

I'd like to go for atleast a weekend, a one day trip would be too tiring at my age!

Yeah, I've been put off this idea by the Aer Lingus pilot's work to rule causing cancellations (I could do a Leeds to Belfast trip on this airline) and also the same by French air traffic control. I've been on longer trips to Italy and Spain recently and on 3 of the 4 flights, there's been delays of an hour or two due to this.

I did consider putting in my original post 'please don't turn this into a discussion about the environment' but I knew it wouldn't make any difference 🙈

Thanks for everyone's input. I still haven't booked one but when I find the right location/flight times/price I'm absolutely going to go for it!

As a newbie to this, I used the Skyscanner ‘everywhere’ option to choose cheap options and that is the reason I have been randomly to Malaga/Madrid/CopenhagenStockholm//Lisbon -lovely places I had never been before and spent a day in 😁😁

@Bjorkdidit "... I've been put off this idea by the Aer Lingus pilot's work to rule causing cancellations (I could do a Leeds to Belfast trip on this airline) ..."

Leeds - Belfast is operated for Aer Lingus by Emerald Airlines (U.K.) no Aer Lingus pilots are involved with this route :)

I did this last month, my friend and I went to Copenhagen for the day from Edinburgh, would definitely recommend it. We had a lovely lunch, did the canal boat tour to see the main sights and then sat at the harbour for a couple of drinks and did some people watching. It was just the perfect amount of time for us.

I'd never considered Copenhagen but I just looked into it and the flights are at good times and are pretty short so this could be a goer!

Portugal is a great option, Lisbon or Porto, both beautiful cities, only a couple of hours away and on the same timeline.
