The "terrifying threat from Labour"

BigWordAtlas · 02/07/2024 13:50

I know that Tory HQ staff often come on here and post, and will be doing even more so at the moment.

I also know that Kier Starmer has done a terrible job in gender critical thinking, and members like him, Rayner and Lammy are currently an absolute shitshow when it comes to the rights and protections of women and children. I'm not looking forward to the battle we'll face after the election to reverse the damage that's been done and to protect those rights, and fully bring down all the MRA policies that have formally or informally kicked in over the last few years.

But does anyone else feel like the absolute barrage on here in the last few days about the Holy Bloody Handmaid Terror that will be Labour's government is a bit... overblown? A bit Tory HQ-flavoured? They're absolutely panicking at the moment and will do any kind of astroturfing they can to chip away at votes, particularly in swing constituencies like mine.

No party is perfect, and Labour is currently far from perfect for me and my children. But realistically, I have to vote Labour where I am if I want to keep a Tory candidate out. I hate their gender ID policies, but this nail-bitten tone of total and complete apocalypse (and yes, I've heard posters use that word in this context) feels unhelpful and not really equipping anyone to improve things after the GE. They made me feel extremely anxious until I just hit a wall with the frantic language, and now I'm feeling much more pragmatic and ready to fight with Labour on this stuff, rather than against them and allowing another party to get in.

So AIBU to feel that most of these posts are at least seeded by Tory HQ, rather than actual Labour voters like me?

Yep I thought the same last night to the point where I thought I'd just stay off Mumsnet until Friday (didn't work lol). The trans threads have also gone into overdrive, I'm GC but I'm not putting up with another Tory govt, I'll be voting Labour with fucking bells on.

None atm they aren’t in power

Great level of discussion.

There's a lot of very stupid scaremongering and out and out lies here. Desperate is indeed the word.

I agree. I am fed up of reading out and out lies on MN. Some by people who have been shown links that what they are saying is untrue, and yet keep posting it.
It is like the Brexit bus all over again. They hope if they keep repeating a lie, some people will believe it.

If you go on conservative twitter (which to me seems totally unhinged but I understand it doesn’t to everyone) then it is quite interesting how they seem to seed themes (‘supermajority’ is the current one) that are basically aimed at causing fear, rather than talking about hope for the future.

labour also have some weird shit on theirs but I would say compared to the conservatives, much less wacky. I mean, the conservatives have a gif of Keirs head as a lightbulb, exploding, it’s fucking weird.

Yes, very much this, but this is where most politics is at the moment, hence the growth of populism.

Get everyone terrified of everything, and the whole population is much easier to control.

Yeah. One of the latest Tory tweets actually opens with ‘this is terrifying.’ Which seemed a bit on the nose given the thread title.

Youre right though it’s all the same, just finding multiple little niches to scare people with and then exploit those fears. There are loads on this thread and it makes me so angry

Melisha · 03/07/2024 13:05

I would not even mind if they were true. But so many lies are being told about Starmer.

i see it so much on X and MN. it's constant fear p*rn and its all baseless stuff thats easily disproven?! they just bank on people being too stupid or lazy to fact check

Tomatina · 03/07/2024 13:12

The Tories are on Last Gasp Desperation Island. Nothing any of them say at this point would surprise me, and their fear-mongering is almost funny. I'm voting Labour.

I think anyone earning over £50k will be pretty pissed off with the prospect of a Labour government. They make it clear time and time again that 'rich' people are their target, and by rich they simply mean high tax earners.

For me it will be the lack of incentive to do well because of the tax burden that is terrifying - when will people realise that socialism doesn't work?!

Nope, the 'higher earners' I know (including me) would be delighted to pay more if it means better services. What use is a healthy bank balance when friends and family have no access to the NHS services they need, bigger class sizes with fewer teachers and resources, crumbling classrooms, police who only turn up in the most extreme cases etc? Not everyone earning above £50k has such a narrow minded, self centred view of the world. And if you look at independent research on how Labour and Tories have fared in terms of the economy, it's actually Labour who come out on top, despite the popular Tory narrative of "you can't trust Labour with the economy". So perhaps socialism isn't all that bad after all, providing it is rooted in a belief of a strong economy.

Melisha · 03/07/2024 13:16

I am voting Labour because their policies will bring about a strong economy.

Aladdinzane · 03/07/2024 13:16

Ooh the high earners and GCs are out in force today.

Lots threatening to leave the country.

delighted to pay more

I wonder how many will be delighted on here, there does seem to be a few saying they will be. We’ll see when taxes go up what people say

If people can get better healthcare, schools etc, most would be delighted to pay a bit more.

Taxes are at their highest rate ever after 14 years of Tory rule, and we've got fuck all to show for it. The country is worse off in every measurable way. I'll happily pay higher taxes when I know they won't be spaffed up the wall on dodgy contracts, nepotism and lining the pockets of the super rich.

Melisha · 03/07/2024 13:29

I agree taxes are higher than ever before and public services are shit. The issue is not taxes, the issue is how the government are spending their money.

Under the last Labour government I was told that I couldn’t have an MRI (too expensive at £300)

Instead they left me in constant agony for 7 years treating me for something I didn’t have) Eventually went private.

My experience of the NHS whatever government is in charge has been pretty crap.
The lack of foresight is staggering

Eg if dementia can be brought on in older people by hearing loss and to treat a person with dementia costs thousands

Why stop ear cleaning on the NHS.

I'm sorry to hear about your personal experience.

But cold hard statistics show that waiting lists, across the board, came right down under the Blair government.

No they are not

Do we have a basic rate of tax at 30%
Do we have a higher rate of tax at 80%
Do we have a higher rate of tax for income and savings at 98%

Or the Supertax in the 60s at 95%

And still we had shit services with rubbish piled high

Edited

I am sure they did as you couldn’t actually get on one as doctors would diagnose and treat you for something that wasn’t wrong with you rather than putting you in a waiting list for anything

Melisha · 03/07/2024 14:01

@Yalta You show little understanding of medical protocols. Ear cleaning has not been stopped under the NHS. It has simply been reversed for people where other methods do not work.
Ear cleaning brings risks. Virtually everyone can have wax removed by using olive oil. But it can take a while. Most people try for a week or less, and then give up.

Gallowayan · 03/07/2024 14:31

Yes, the tabloids put out blatant misinformation and not news. This is nothing new.

Elections are decided by people who can't read the DM or other tabloids without moving their lips and the Tories control the media. In this way The odds are stacked against Labour and The SNP. The DM has been running a smear campaign against the SNP for years.
