To think It's not THAT odd to order a baked potato instead of chips, with a burger?

Went for a pub lunch with my friend on Sunday.
Ordered a burger and asked for baked potato instead of chips.
I just don't favour the chips in this particular pub, and it saves fat/calories.

When my lunch arrived my friend was aghast (not exaggerating) kept repeatedly telling me how odd it was, that 'burgers go with chips that's that!' and 'You can order a baked potato on the menu anyway, so that's like you've got TWO meals!'
I see the point there but, a baked potato has fewer calories than a portion of chips, so doesn't that sort of negate that point at least?

I had the same comment a few years ago on a work do too-although they just made one comment rather than repeated ones.

There's a pub near me that offers any side with a burger, including baked potatoes, whereas most places I have to ask for a swap.

I kind of proved my friends' point in this pub on Sunday though, because the burger came with guacamole and roast veg on it, and I couldn't fit it into my mouth so I used them as a topping for the potato so I suppose that DID make it into two meals in the end!

The only people I know who do this are brainwashed from years of slimming world, utterly convinced that calories from rice and baked potatoes don’t count but a slice of bread is a SYN!

To be fair there are a lot less fat and calories in a small jacket spud than there are in half a plate of fries. (ETA I agree over the whole Slimming World pasta/rice/potatoes being ‘free’. It’s ludicrous).

Perfectly normal, OP, I would'nt think twice.

Burgers are one of those weird double-carb meals with the bread from the bun plus chips or a spud - or sweet potato wedges if you must.

Anyone for whom a baked potato is a main meal is either on a diet, skint or a joyless fun sponge. A baked potato is the carb, you need loads of protein and vegetables alongside it. Roast potatoes aren't "a main meal", nor are mash or chips. Why would a baked spud be?

You don’t nomally smother roast potatoes with cheese and beans. Or at least I don’t!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 02/07/2024 13:25

I mean, I have a lot of love for chips, so wouldn't personally ever sub a jacket potato for them, but I wouldn't think you were weird and I wouldn't comment on it.

It comes to something when you get a bit of a bashing for making a healthier choice!

shearwater2 · 02/07/2024 13:25

YABU for scraping guacamole out of the burger, that's the best bit!

McDonalds in other countries do the Wacko Guaco and it is the best.

I wouldn't class sausage, baked potato and beans as having a baked potato "as a side". You wouldn't have just a sausage and beans, and I view sides as things you can remove from the meal and it's still a meal (just a smaller amount of food).

That's a weird way of looking at it. On a restaurant menu the dish is usually the meat or fish or whatever, and the sides are the veg and the spuds or rice or breads (like naan)

In your example, Sausages And... would be the meal, with chips, mash or a baked potato as the carb and beans, peas or whatever as the veg.

Mrsjayy · 02/07/2024 13:26

Oh I don't think I'd be able to eat that texturely it be too weird for me my brain would see it as 2 different meals. I wouldn't go on about it though but it is weird. 😀

amusedbush · 02/07/2024 13:27

KreedKafer · 02/07/2024 13:21

I wouldn't say a burger and jacket spud are natural bedfellows, but I can see the logic if you want a healthier choice than chips. And it's not like having two meals at all; a baked potato can be a light lunch but it's also a side order.

Ah, the "light" part is where I fall down when making baked potatoes.

The potato itself is fine; it's the 800 calories of butter, cheese and coleslaw I add that gets me 😂

Bjorkdidit · 02/07/2024 13:29

amusedbush · 02/07/2024 13:21

I don't know. I can't even put it into words but it just feels wrong!

Even the thought makes me queasy. My brother agreed with me at the time, so I feel validated in my ridiculousness 😅

I don't fancy that either. I don't think beans or coleslaw go with baked potatoes either.

Cottage cheese (Longley Farm full fat), grated cheese, butter and loads of salt and pepper for me. Or maybe tuna mayonnaise.

I can honestly say that in all my 53 years, I've never seen burger and jacket potato on the same plate anywhere.

Same. And there's a reason for that 🤮

ahagiraffe · 02/07/2024 13:30

It is an odd combination but she should have just judged you silently.

DiscoBeat · 02/07/2024 13:31

I would have that instead of the bun with a skinny burger. But then I don't have chips with the bun - it's odd to me to have two lots of carbs on one plate.

Edited

I have never done slimming world but I have heard of this and I agree it is a bit ludicrous! I can see the logic with bread though. It's very easy to get through half a loaf of bread just by going and grabbing it from the packet, whereas pasta/a baked potato etc. takes a thought process?

My MiL once served pizza and mashed potato….

Bloom15 · 02/07/2024 13:34

I'd think it was a bit weird but I wouldn't say anything as a) I'm not eating it and b) I wouldn't care that much

GalacticalFarce · 02/07/2024 13:34

Eat what you want. No one would think anything of you having a jacket potato then saying "I'm still really hungry. I'm going to get a burger"

CurlewKate · 02/07/2024 13:34

I wouldn't be ordering chips because I thought I'd need more food. I'd be ordering chips because chips! So I do think a jacket potato is a bit of an odd choice. And I might tease a friend about it a bit- depending on the friend, of course.

Bloom15 · 02/07/2024 13:35

TheChippendenSpook · 02/07/2024 13:10

I also eat mashed potato sandwiches when I have beef stew.

You. Are. A. Monster

Marygoround22 · 02/07/2024 13:09

I didn't have anything on it! I wouldn't order a baked potato with topping AND a burger. It was just a side baked potato. Some pubs/restaurants offer a choice of chips/baked potato/mash do they not? And they're on a lot of menu's side orders.

If I am weird I am weird. I don't usually mind eating junk food or calorific foods if I am out for a meal but the difference with chips and jacket potatoes is a LOT so if I don't particularly fancy chips I do this. I don't really like fried food generally speaking so to me it makes sense, but if I am weird I am weird Smile

My friend honestly must've made at least five comments sounding very shocked. If I was ever surprised at something someone had ordered to eat I don't think I'd comment at all, or if I was it would be 'ooh that's different' and then that's that-I am sure there are more interesting things to talk about!

And yes, both potatoes! Although I can see why one wouldn't want a mashed potato sandwich, or to put a baked potato in one although chip sandwiches are widely acceptable.

I don’t know what everyone’s problem is. Would you all have such a strong reaction if she got a salad instead of chips or baked potato??

I think it’s a great idea to swap chips for baked potato.

ScattyHattie · 02/07/2024 13:37

It's the same potatoes in another form so think friend is rude & weird to bring it up, especially as seems to be suggesting your overeating with 2 meals comment, suspect you triggered her internalised guilt about less, healthy chips. Salad can be rubbish in some pubs and isn't as filling so I wouldn't want that swap either.
It's not so different to ordering the curry with chips or jacket potato if didn't want rice.

We often had baked potato as a side growing up, for 'meat and two veg' type meals, so that's no issue with me at all.

But I still wouldn't have it with a burger, in the same way you wouldn't have it in a sandwich. It just doesn't go.

Jacket potato is a traditionally home cooked food whereas burgers are an iconic fast food option and generally served with quick options - fries/ onion rings/ salad etc.

It's like having sweet and sour chicken with penne pasta. You just don't 😅

The weight loss/ health reason is also a bit strange, because usually if trying to save calories, people just have the burger with a salad, or skip the bun, or have something other than a burger to begin with. A burger in a bun and a baked potato is still a very calorific meal.

Februaryfeels · 02/07/2024 13:41

I'd probably order a baked potato if the chips were rank

It's even ruder to comment on what others are eating so your friend should wind her neck in and concentrate on her own plate

stayathomer · 02/07/2024 13:41

I’d see it as two meals too, fries/ chips are a side, whereas I’d see a baked potato is filling on its own.

Westfacing · 02/07/2024 13:41

We have jackets as a side some times at home.

Jacket spuds

Jackets

What with the jackets? Shock

Its a baked potato!!

DinnaeFashYersel · 02/07/2024 13:42

It's completely normal

Your friend is odd. Or doesn't get out much.
