To want to do something other on holiday than lie on a sunlounger?

The people I'm on holiday with just want to lie on the sun loungers by the pool all day every day. Is this common?

People like different holidays, if it’s not for you, tell them you’re going out to the market or sights or whatever and meet them later, was it not discussed before you all booked together what kind of holiday it was going to be?

Echobelly · 02/07/2024 11:55

It seems to be not uncommon, but has always puzzled me how some people can have zero curiosity about the place they are staying and just want to sunbathe. But each to their own - you go off and explore if you want OP.

LoveWine123 · 02/07/2024 11:57

For me there are different types of holidays - the ones where you relax, eat, sleep and spend your time on a lounger in one of those big resort type places that you never leave. And then there are the holidays where you do lots of activities, go hiking and traveling around. Which one did you agree to go on?

Waitingfordoggo · 02/07/2024 11:58

I don’t sunbathe so any relaxing I do on holiday is in the shade. I get bored quickly too so although I do a lot more lazing on holiday than I would at home, I generally need to do something most days of the holiday, but nothing too strenuous- going for a walk, visiting a market, sitting in a town square and people watching…

I think you can surely do that anyway though regardless of what your holiday companions are doing?

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 02/07/2024 11:59

Normal for me . That all I do. Beer , crisps ,book and sunlounger. Its the best allllllllll day . I might venture to the beach but again , beer , crisps, book and sunlounger
Go and see sights if you want . You don't need babysitting

Zwicky · 02/07/2024 12:02

I think it’s very common. Lots of people are absolutely shattered and really value the chance to “do nothing”. I despise hot weather and hate sitting/lying in the sun but I can go to a lodge/cottage somewhere like the Cairngorms or Eryri with a stack of books and spend a few days reading, watching tv, playing board games, walking (by which I mean 2 miles, not 20), and eating and nobody says a word about it. Do it in Crete and everyone is “I couldn’t bear it!”

LoftyMember · 02/07/2024 12:02

That’s me! But to be fair I do a very mentally and physically demanding job, endurance sports as a hobby and run around after teenagers the rest of the time so holidays for me are an opportunity to lie very still in the sun for a week with a book and recharge myself. The only week of the year I’m not constantly active.

Teenagekicksmyass · 02/07/2024 12:03

I’ve just come back from a week in Majorca. I spent the majority of it on a sun lounger reading books. Myself and DH have had a really tough year so far and desperately needed some downtime.

We picked Majorca because we’ve been loads before and seen all the usual sights so didn’t feel the need to be up and off every day.

I am usually a sightseer but I’m not snobby about why people don’t move from their sun loungers - I don’t know them or what their stories are so I don’t try to guess or judge them.

Epicaricacy · 02/07/2024 12:03

is that even a question? Why wouldn't it be common?
People are even ready to fight to get a spot on a sunlounger, surely you must have heard of that.

Lying down all day doing nothing for a week is not my idea of a good time, so I just.. don't. I do something else.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 02/07/2024 12:12

I'm not a fan of lying in the sun all day either, I like to see the place I'm visiting, but I don't necessarily want to do loads of activities either.

My activities stretch to lots of walking (not hiking), hiring a car and actually exploring the place I'm holidaying in, visiting the big outdoor markets, lunching out in local restaurants, stopping in different places for a drink and then moving on.

My idea of hell is lying in the sun all day, sitting in the same bar all day, going to the same places/restaurants every day

circular2478 · 02/07/2024 12:21

I'm going on holiday soon and plan to do very little. Sleep in, lie in sun lounger either dozing, reading or listening to podcasts. I'll also swim, eat and drink. Will walk down to the private beach and swim there and might do some water sports. We have booked one excursion that we all want to do. We've had a few city breaks and skiing holiday in the past few months so a holiday with no schedule is needed.

hopeishere · 02/07/2024 12:29

We are going on holiday tomorrow and DH is pulling together a packed agenda for each day. Next year I want to fly and flop.

PassingStranger · 02/07/2024 12:30

Nobody has mentioned its possible to do a bit of both. Relax and swim and explore.
For those saying I hate lying in the sun, you can always go in the shade.

Wexone · 02/07/2024 12:34

Different people like different holidays. Some times you need a week of doing nothing. We do a bit of both. have done the fully packed schedule holidays where its all go and we are wrecked by time come back. Or the doing nothing but relaxing wondering and we are refreshed when we come home. No one is forcing you to do it get up and go somewhere if you want. Currently looking at my hols this year - hoping a holiday end of sept somewhere hot as this year has been very hectic for both of us we have both agreed a nice hotel with a pool and a few nice restaurants is what we need this time. With the odd excursion if we want to

YellowAsteroid · 02/07/2024 12:34

I hate holidays like that. I can lie about on a sun lounger at home. I like to be doing & seeing new stuff.

So, YANBU.

Sunnydiary · 02/07/2024 12:35

Is there something stopping you from doing what you would prefer whilst the rest of your group lie in the sun?

BingoMarieHeeler · 02/07/2024 12:36

Neither party are unreasonable. Why would they be OP? Do what you want on holiday.

bananaboats · 02/07/2024 12:36

Very normal, also depends where you are a lot of beach resorts don't exactly have a lot of other things to do as that's exactly why people go there. There's nothing stopping you going off on your own though.

JMSA · 02/07/2024 12:37

Sounds blissful to me Grin

That would do my head in tbh. You can do that in the garden - at home!

Can you not just do your own thing?

Did you not know what these people were like before you went on holiday with them?

SallyWD · 02/07/2024 12:37

This would drive me mad!!

spandle · 02/07/2024 12:38

I like to mix it up...out of seven days we got out on excursion and trips for three days and then rest on resort always get water park for kids. Love more trips but can't afford it.

Drivingmissmarigold · 02/07/2024 12:40

Surely you actually knew these people before agreeing to holiday with them? Just go off and do your own thing if laying around isn't for you 🤷

CyanideShake · 02/07/2024 12:42

Of course it’s common. But surely you know that?

I like to mix it up a bit. Some days I like to flop and some days I like to sightsee. Can you not just take yourself out? Hire a car, or see if there are any bus trips to nearby sights etc.

DappledThings · 02/07/2024 12:44

Lots of people do, lots of people don't. You obviously know this OP and you know you're not in any way unreasonable to go off and see the sights so crack on. I can do a couple of days of nothing but not a full week so I'd be off in the day and meeting up later.
