To want to do something other on holiday than lie on a sunlounger?

The people I'm on holiday with just want to lie on the sun loungers by the pool all day every day. Is this common?

@JennyBeanR

There seems to be a level of snobbery in discussions like these. Some of the comments can be read as "only chavs like to lounge and eat from buffets all day on holiday. Cultured people like myself can't imagine anything worse".

Can you point out exactly who said this - or anything like this. Who - on this thread - has said - or implied that 'only chavs like to lounge and eat from buffets all day on holiday?'

I mean, ya know, apart from YOU!

@catin8oots · Today 13:21

You're clearly a much better and intelligent, worldly-wise person than your scummy sun-lounger dossing travel companions OP.

I'd ditch them personally.

ANOTHER poster with a weird attitude problem. You - and JennyBeanR, are both clearly projecting. Wink

@KreedKafer

Totally agree. There's always a huge snobby subtext whenever this subject crops up on Mumsnet.

So is that poster. ^ No-one on this thread has acted like they think they're better because they like to explore on holiday, and not just sit on the sun loungers all day. As I say, some serious projection going on with you 3.

DontBiteTheCat · 02/07/2024 14:24

Yes!

I love nothing more than lying in the sun with a book, however I do go exploring later in the day as it gets cooler. A nice walk, the local town etc.

suburburban · 02/07/2024 14:25

I like to do both, I can't sit in the sun for long as I burn

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 02/07/2024 14:27

God, I can't wait for the kids to grow up so I can have a holiday practically catatonic on a sunbed. There isn't one insult, even common, that would shake me off that lounger.

pontipinemum · 02/07/2024 14:29

I've been on holidays with friends who love to lie in the sun. I get bored after about an hour, I also burn so don't like to stay out long. So just take yourself off somewhere. My holidays these days are a bit of a mix, a day doing 'something' then a day chilling.

You can do that in your back garden. Why go to an exotic country overseas, (and spend a fortune getting there and staying there,) just to lie on your bloody sun lounger for the entire holiday? How boring, and dull, and tedious, and unimaginative! Confused

Thankfully I have a DH (and DC) who, when we are on holiday in a foreign country, want to spend at least some of the time, exploring the area, meeting the locals, immersing yourself in their culture, going on excursions, and having adventures! I would NEVER go on holiday with them again, if they just wanted to lie on the sun lounger all week! Some of the time yeah fair enough. But not ALL the time!

And here's another one 🙄

Maybe your back garden is similar to a sandy Spanish beach, but mine isn't. Not to mention the fact that I still will have to cook and clean if after toasting in the 15C summer weather here.

Being warm, swimming in beautiful surroundings while having lovely drinks and food, listening to music, going for lazy strolls, watching evening entertainment is certainly not dull, or tedious to me 🤷

Yeah, nobody's sneering at a sun-lounger holiday and implying that there's something wrong people who enjoy them, are they - oh, except they are.

For example:

You can do that in your back garden. Why go to an exotic country overseas, (and spend a fortune getting there and staying there,) just to lie on your bloody sun lounger for the entire holiday? How boring, and dull, and tedious, and unimaginative!

Those were literally your own words. Your post couldn't have been more judgemental and snobbish if you'd tried.

Also these sorts of comments.

It seems to be not uncommon, but has always puzzled me how some people can have zero curiosity about the place they are staying and just want to sunbathe.

People who just want to get burnt and bloated on a lounger, never leaving their all-inclusive resort, baffle me.

I think it’s far more boring and tedious to judge other people for how they enjoy their holidays!

Does it bother you that some people like to explore their surroundings and gain local knowledge on holiday?

KreedKafer · 02/07/2024 14:37

FrenchandSaunders · 02/07/2024 14:34

"immerse myself in culture and meet the locals" 😂😂

I also laughed at this.

I can guarantee that the locals have absolutely zero interest in being either a tourist attraction or a vehicle for cultural immersion, and just want to get on with their working day.

GirlOverboard123 · 02/07/2024 14:37

Is this your first foreign holiday? It just seems like you haven't really thought about what you want your holiday to be like or researched places to go and things to see. You just need to use a bit more initiative.

I'm not a super active or adventurous person, but I wouldn't want to lie on a sun lounger by the pool all day either. I always look for places that have a good coastal path nearby so I can go for nice long walks by the sea (my absolute favourite thing to do on a beach holiday). I'll have a walk down to the beach and go for a wander around the town every day. I'll plan a couple of days where I'll go further afield and visit a nearby town or local attraction. I'm not a sunbather but I like finding a shady spot to sit and read a book or listen to music/a podcast for a couple of hours.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/07/2024 14:40

Depends where you are really. Can’t do with schlepping around for the sake of it. I go on holiday to relax. We’ve seen all the main sights in the usual fly and flop places so it’s sunbed all the way when we do them. Our main holiday is usually long haul and somewhere new though. So then we’ll spend ten days or so seeing the place the collapse on a lounger for the last few days.

Normallynumb · 02/07/2024 14:40

How well do you know the people you're with?
Surely you discussed the holiday before booking
Personally I enjoy exploring different places( gentle pace as I'm disabled) and stopping for coffees and people watching.
Can't you go off and do your own thing and agree to meet later? You'll come back resentful otherwise

NOTthisOldchestnut · 02/07/2024 14:45

It doesn't need to be one or the other. We like a balance, an active day one day, a relaxed one the next. It doesn't have to be two extremes. I would hate either, and like to coast in the middle. A jam packed itinerary for the entire holiday would be a nightmare for me, but I also wouldn't like sunbathing and not leaving the hotel restaurant for the entire time. A balance is good.

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/07/2024 14:45

I like a mix. First couple of days, shade, book, swim, sleep, eat with a wander around the resort/to the beach in the afternoon and a walk in the evening.

Then explore a bit further - bus/tour/bike to various places. Then another chill day.

It's your holiday - do what you want to do.

YellowAsteroid · 02/07/2024 12:34

I hate holidays like that. I can lie about on a sun lounger at home. I like to be doing & seeing new stuff.

So, YANBU.

  1. The weather sucks in the UK (I love heat)
  2. My job is awful with boundaries even when I'm on leave, and the physical barrier/distance helps me disconnect enough to relax (and is a deterrent to clients contacting me!)

My ideal holiday would be a looong one where I have 1-2 weeks to recuperate from being constantly knackered, and then another 1-2 weeks to wholeheartedly explore once re-energised! Sadly very few holidays last that long.

StoneColdAlibi · 02/07/2024 15:01

I tend to do both, a few days exploring and then onto somewhere else to switch off and recharge. Always works really well and having two different destinations makes it seem a lot longer.

KimberleyClark · 02/07/2024 15:07

I don’t think there’s been the same level of snobbery on here as is usually expressed on threads about cruising. The “my idea of hell” posts are on a completely different level there.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 02/07/2024 15:07

Look around you. Yes of course it's common.

I mean, your username says it all. You clearly don't like the heat 😉if you live anywhere in the UK, lying in the back garden is invariably a sad, grey exercise.

Tbf, I do miss the uni student days when I was up to do anything – even whistletop city break day trips. I've always been a huge museum buff, and I love outdoor al fresco ambience as well as hearing/practising my languages (native so no I'm not one of those self important tourists who waste locals' time forcing them to listen to mangled basic pleasantries!)

But if I HAD to pick (and you often do with limited holiday time), these days, I need the relaxation time. My job means my mind, body and soul are crying out for rest first. In some glorious heat 😉

Gelasring · 02/07/2024 15:08

Is feelinghothothot the reason for the protests about tourists in some European countries? Poor locals.

Wotcher · 02/07/2024 15:09

Boring as hell.

MadYoke · 02/07/2024 15:11

I would hate this but loads of people clearly love it, that's fine, each to their own. You will just have to go off on your own I guess?

CloudywMeatballs · 02/07/2024 15:13

Are they lying in the sun on the sun loungers? Or in the shade? There's no way I would want to lay in the sun for long. I wouldn't want to get burnt first of all, plus it's just really uncomfortable being in the direct sun. I can see the appeal of laying on one in a nice shady spot, reading my book and sipping a cocktail, but I don't think I would want to do that all day every day and I would be in and out of the pool too.
