To want to do something other on holiday than lie on a sunlounger?

The people I'm on holiday with just want to lie on the sun loungers by the pool all day every day. Is this common?

If you suggest an outing and the others decline then just go do it and meet up later. You're not connected at the hip so please yourself

WobblyBoots · 02/07/2024 12:47

A lying on sun loungers holiday is exactly what I need right now as I have three small kids and absolutely no time to sit down and relax. So YABU because I'd sell my soul for even a long weekend with a sun lounger, beer and a book!

But I get it. Under normal circumstances it's a bit boring and something I like to do on hols but not all of the time.

outdooryone · 02/07/2024 12:48

It is common.

I personally cannot think of anything worse.

But each to their own.

Can you do your own thing each day?

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 02/07/2024 12:49

When we have resort holidays we have to compromise because I like to lounge and DH likes to sightsee. We tend to do day on day off, so to speak. Works nicely and we both enjoy the holiday.

ginasevern · 02/07/2024 12:50

I like a mixture of both on holiday but I definitely would want to see the historic sites and check out local restaurants.

I find it curious that you say "the people" you are on holiday with. Did you not know much about them beforehand? Why did you go on holiday with them when your interests are so radically different?

kerstina · 02/07/2024 12:51

After the British weather the last two years I would love that sort of holiday yes but would be happier on the beach than by a pool. Sometimes I want to just relax .

2chocolateoranges · 02/07/2024 12:51

Sunlounger, good book and plenty suncream and I'm happy beside the pool.

We do go lots of walks and have at least 1 day trip on our holidays sometimes 2.

But we both work incredibly hard and see holidays as down time to relax all day.

pinkyredrose · 02/07/2024 12:51

Doesn't sound much of a holiday. Who are you with? Just go off and do your own thing it's your holiday too.

Zwicky · 02/07/2024 12:53

For those saying I hate lying in the sun, you can always go in the shade.

I think the OP is talking about beach type holidays in southern Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Caribbean etc. You don’t go into the shade in places like that and it magically drops to 16 degrees and you still need to walk about and if you want to go in the water it’s near impossible to also be in shade. It’s honestly much easier to go somewhere not too hot in the first place if you don’t like heat/sun. If someone said they wanted to go in a beach holiday in February you wouldn’t say “Riga is fabulous and you can always wear a coat”.

FeelingHotHotHotFeelingHotHotHot · 02/07/2024 12:53

As @pinkyredrose asked, who are you with @Chocolatelover223 ? Friends, family, partner???

BloodyAdultDC · 02/07/2024 12:54

I'm a busy holiday-er - always got a plan for days out, visiting local places of interest - after all, what's the point of travelling thousands of miles to not actually experience any of the country you're in.

That said, after a mental year I am looking forward to a relaxing 10 days later this year. But I already have been researching a few local places of interest...

I couldn't for the life of me sit by a pool for 2 weeks. I'd burn to a crisp and be bored out of my skull.

FrenchandSaunders · 02/07/2024 12:55

All depends on what's going in their lives I imagine.

I work from home now and the DDs are adults and have left home. Therefore my life is quite chilled these days so I'm happy to go off exploring in a new place.

When I worked in London with a big commute and had small children I'd have given anything to lie on a sunbed for days with a book and cocktail.

FourChimneys · 02/07/2024 12:56

Everyone is different. My brother and SIL like holidays like that, even though they are very inactive in their everyday lives too.

I don't think I've laid on a sunlounger for the past 50 years. We are usually doing something energetic like cycling, climbing mountains or hiring kayaks.

Perhaps you need to take yourself off this time and then go away with different people.

reallytimetodeclutter · 02/07/2024 12:57

I used to be a bit snobby about this but now my life is extremely busy and tiring resting on holiday is very attractive. I'd pick a spot in the shade though

Pigeonqueen · 02/07/2024 12:59

I like to do both. Each to their own but lying on a sun bed all day and reading is my idea of hell unless it’s split up with some outings and sight seeing stuff too.

shearwater2 · 02/07/2024 13:00

I do a bit of both. Certainly I like to see and read about what the local area is like and do some pottering about. I do like the opportunity to do nothing apart from read, swim, drink cocktails and eat good food and it takes me a long time to be bored of that.

I've certainly had some holidays where we barely moved from the hotel. Depends what is going on in the rest of your life, but sometimes I have been very stressed and burned out by work and needed to not do very much. I've also had holidays where we've done too much and I came home needing a holiday.

Staringatthewalljustmeagain · 02/07/2024 13:10

People who just want to get burnt and bloated on a lounger, never leaving their all-inclusive resort, baffle me.

SummerBarbecues · 02/07/2024 13:17

Different people like differetn holidays. I don't sunbathe and can't stand lying on a sunlounger. I'd rather stay at home that doing that. I have a fully packed schedule on holiday.

purplecorkheart · 02/07/2024 13:17

I am would not be a huge fan of spending the day on a sun lounger. I like to walk around and explore the area I am in, try some local foods, visit the port etc. That would be other people's idea of hell though. Everyone is different.

I would go off on my own if I were you. Depending where you are there my be companies offering sight seeing tours or see where the local transport can bring you. Or find a nice local coffee shop and people watch.

greenpolarbear · 02/07/2024 13:19

FeelingHotHotHotFeelingHotHotHot · 02/07/2024 12:37

That would do my head in tbh. You can do that in the garden - at home!

Can you not just do your own thing?

Did you not know what these people were like before you went on holiday with them?

Not everyone has a garden, and no one has much in the way of sunshine 😂

stressedespresso · 02/07/2024 13:19

YANBU at all. I hate those kind of holidays - so boring! Went on one with a friend last year and have decided that beach holidays are simply not for me anymore, such a waste of money to lie there and do nothing. I am so much happier going out on adventures and sightseeing

greenpolarbear · 02/07/2024 13:20

It's common to not want the same as the people you go on holiday with, yes. Holidaying with anyone outside of direct household usually spirals into differences very quickly.

catin8oots · 02/07/2024 13:21

You're clearly a much better and intelligent, worldly-wise person than your scummy sun-lounger dossing travel companions OP.

I'd ditch them personally.

BellaVita · 02/07/2024 13:21

This is exactly myself and DH atm! Lying on a lounger, reading a book, dip in the pool, cool beer/cocktail or two…venture in to the little town on an evening for some traditional food = bliss.

We have not had the easiest time the last two years and more recently April/May/June with DS1’s health.

Jengnr · 02/07/2024 13:24

Depends on the holiday.

City break? I want to see the sights.
Sun holiday? I want to chill out with a book while the kids go wild in the pool.
