The people I'm on holiday with just want to lie on the sun loungers by the pool all day every day. Is this common?

Don't the hotel have any excursions you could book? Or go online and book yourself on something? You can usually find stuff really easily on Tripadvisor.
We usually have a mix of relaxation and sightseeing on holiday, I get a bit bored if I don't leave the hotel all week but it's not fair for you to dictate how your friends spend their holiday just like it's not fair for them to stop you going out by yourself.

Viator are also good for excursions.

Well it is for some people, just as fishing or rockclimbing or looking at medieval churches all day is normal for some people. I think it's best to have the talk about what everyone's idea of a good holiday is before going on holiday with people the first time (same goes for partners), and if you aren't mostly on the same page, don't do it. But if there are at least two people who want to lie on sunloungers all day, I don't think you need to feel bad about leaving them to it and going off to see the sights.

I like to read and will do it for 3-4 hrs a day when not compelled to do anything else - I'll do it on the sofa at home and I'll do it just as happily on a sunlounger with a drink. But not all day long. Do it for as long as you feel like it and then do something else and meet them again for dinner!

Yes it's common but I wouldn't opt for a holiday like that. Most of the people I holiday with like a mix of relaxing and sightseeing/activities. Otherwise I would go off on my own.

I can think of nothing worse than frying my skin in the sun all day.
But horses for courses...
