COVID causes period

Sunshining20 · 01/07/2024 19:30

I have COVID and am on day 13 of my cycle and been spotting for a few days and now full on bleeding. I only ended my last period over 1 week ago!

I have been to gp and awaiting ultrasound (before I knew i had COVID) to cover all bases as have had some lower back pain recently too. I am 37.

Researching I've found that COVID can cling to estrogen receptors and bring on a period. I've had COVID 3 times before that I'm aware of and never experienced this. But never had bleeding between periods either until this month.

Aibu to think COVID could be the cause?! Anyone experienced this?

Early on there were LOADS of reports of both covid and the vaccine causing women's periods to go a little out of sync/heavier/longer. It was denied but then lots of people started filling in yellow cards and I think they listened.

OhshutupDerek · 01/07/2024 20:08

As with PP I had a bleed after the COVID vaccine when they first came out. I have never ever in 30 years of having periods had an irregular bleed aside from that once. I think it was 100% the vaccine.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 01/07/2024 20:09

Yes I had this from the vaccine, twice!

CelesteCunningham · 01/07/2024 20:09

I haven't had any irregular bleeds but my periods are much heavier since my first covid infection two years ago and a few friends have found the same.

greendu · 01/07/2024 20:11

Yes, period irregularity is a known side effect of Covid and the vaccine. Nothing to worry about 😊

Hoglet70 · 01/07/2024 20:13

Never had any issues with my period with any Covid vaccination (I had four) or dose of Covid (had it twice that I know of).

Sunshining20 · 01/07/2024 20:48

I was aware of the vaccine causing issues with menstrual cycles but not the actual virus itself. Tbh it would be somewhat a relief if COVID was the cause..

I thought it was the fact that the immune system was activated that caused irregular periods, rather than the vaccine per se. So it stands to reason that Covid would cause it too.

Bingbangboo · 01/07/2024 21:13

I had disruption to my period after each vaccine dose and after both times I've had covid. Didn't seem to be a pattern - sometimes it came earlier and sometimes two weeks late.

BelindaOkra · 01/07/2024 21:18

I am end of perimenopausal - prob just menopausal now and bled after the pfeizer vaccine (not after the Astra Zeneca) and after having Covid.

Tsulsaquoola · 01/07/2024 21:18

I'm 53, menopausal and have a Mirena coil fitted - and last time I had Covid I had a period of sorts afterwards, after well over a year of nothing. My GP said it isn't unusual for Covid to cause disruption to periods. It lasted a few weeks then things went back to normal.

mitogoshi · 01/07/2024 21:21

I went 5 months after the vaccine, dd went 6 months and they had sent her for an ultrasound etc (as a young adult they worried the pregnancy test she took was a false negative). It's definitely messes you!

DawsonsFreak · 01/07/2024 21:44

I was 18 months period free and thought I was firmly in menopause, then had a bleed 30 days after my second vaccine. I am also sure the vaccine kickstarted my daughter’s periods, as she had her first one around 30 days after her vaccine.

GG1986 · 01/07/2024 22:34

I've recently had covid and my period was 4 days late that month, then with the vaccine it was 1 week earlier than usual. I think it's quite common.

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/07/2024 23:07

Weirdly I've just had Covid and had a period - my first in years as I am almost through menopause (I hope). Took me by complete surprise.

MargaretThursday · 01/07/2024 23:16

I missed a period after having covid, but also the next 3-4 periods I had loads of clots when normally I hardly get any. We know covid can cause clotting so when I thought about it, it wasn't unexpected but I hadn't heard anyone saying they'd had that issue.
Didn't have any issues with my period after any of the jabs.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 01/07/2024 23:41

I hadn’t had a period for 4 months when I got Covid last October as I am in the final stage of perimenopause, I had an horrific one so heavy it was bordering on a haemorrhage and it lasted 10 days, I had a further light one 2 weeks later and haven’t had one since

I read widely and it’s very common with Covid, mine was exacerbated by steroids which I needed for lung function

nocoolnamesleft · 01/07/2024 23:47

Ironically, Covid seemed to make my periods more regular for a while.

LittleTalkingMan · 01/07/2024 23:48

Since having Covid 4 times my periods have gone haywire!!

NewMe2024 · 01/07/2024 23:52

I honestly think having very bad covid (possibly long COVID) triggered my early menopause. I had just turned 40.

I wonder if it is the new strain or something? Other then a bit of a blocked nose and slight headache I've had no other symptoms then felt so light headed ystrday and my bleeding really ramped up. Soaked through two pads last night and onto my pjs. So heavy.

No, it's happened with previous strains

PTSDBarbiegirl · 02/07/2024 08:11

I was menopausal and had a light but v painful period in 2020, spotting after both vaccines and again on 2 more bouts of new covid. V weird.

Sunshining20 · 02/07/2024 08:34

@PTSDBarbiegirl that's really interesting. The Dr said she couldn't immediately see anything and my smear was only 6 months ago. I've never had one week between one full on period ending and another one starting. Very weird indeed

My periods restarted at the age of 60 (after years of no periods and HRT) a few days after my 2nd Covid vaccine.
After a year of heavy bleeding I ended up on the Mirena coil and will have to have it replaced after 5 years.
I will be 66 then which seems ridiculously old to still need a coil....
