Omg what the hell were they thinking.
Just tried making bolognaise with it. It's direct separate in the same way, and is just big lumps. 😬

I don't know why anyone still buys supermarket meat to be honest.

Affordability? Availability?

Butchers are extortionate. I can't afford to go there.

Rusty101 · 01/07/2024 21:27

I’m amazed that Sainsbury & Lidl are still selling it, surely sales have dropped off a cliff!? Agree about the cat food vibes, although I’m sure that most cats would turn their noses up at it. I get mince from Morrisons now.

I raw feed my dogs and their food.comes.like this!

I can't eat the human version. It's just dog food to me

Me too, - had to get a Sainsburys home delivery this weekend due to chaos here, and this “stuff” was delivered… We couldn’t face it so the Ddog got lucky!
Somehow the words “un fit for human consumption” flashed into my head and we had something else for tea instead🫤

Which ever poster said it looked / tasted woolly got it spot on!

Wow. I actually prefer it. Less plastic waste, less room in fridge or freezer, tastes the same to us.

I don't mind it either and because it's vacuum packed it doesn't smell odd like mince does sometimes.
You can but a kitchen spatula called a meat masher which breaks it up properly when cooking

I don't know why anyone still buys supermarket meat to be honest.

Because butchers are much better quality but expensive in comparison

AppleCream · 01/07/2024 21:48

The vacuum packed mince tastes the same and it's better for the environment - not because of the plastic packaging, but because it takes up less space so uses less energy to transport.

FofB · 01/07/2024 21:49

Hate it. Refuse to buy it now and made sure I left a crappy review online

I don't know why anyone still buys supermarket meat to be honest.

Because supermarkets deliver and my butchers don't.

Weekends are too short as it is, I try to avoid shopping as much as I possibly can, and there's only so much that fits in the freezer.

Dontsayyouloveme · 01/07/2024 22:11

I bought it without thinking then panicked when I got home! But I prefer it like this! I hate the minced worm mince.. I always had to mush it right down so there were no strands.. so this saves me a job! Only thing I’ve noticed is that it doesn’t taste as beefy…

Change2banon · 01/07/2024 22:15

I find it no different to regular packaged mince. It breaks up when cooking, looks the same, cooks the same, tastes the same 🤷🏻‍♀️

LadyChilli · 01/07/2024 22:41

I prefer the vacuum packs. I can't stand that horrible red soaked pad that sticks to the bottom of traditionally packed supermarket mince. Plus the new way takes up less freezer space and must be way cheaper/more environmentally friendly to transport. I often buy mince from a farm shop or the local farmers market and it's vacuum packed too. I can tell decent mince from cheap mince (which I'd still use in things like chilli) but packaging doesn't affect the flavour for me.

WithIcePlease · 01/07/2024 22:53

I almost posted this last night. It's a right PITA to get it separated.
I'll just have to go with Iceland frozen steak mince if all supermarkets do this. I keep as a spare usually.

CointreauVersial · 01/07/2024 22:57

It's an absolute nightmare getting into the package, and it takes ages to break up when you cook it, but once cooked, I don't think it's much different. I prefer the classic packs, though.

Moier · 01/07/2024 22:59

It's disgusting.. even though they say its the same. I tried to make a cottage pie and a chilli..
Even in slow cooker it's just big lumps.
I get from the butchers now.

Hohofortherobbers · 01/07/2024 23:02

Yep, gave up on it, I buy frozen now so it's separated

Turquoise19 · 01/07/2024 23:03

It’s absolutely vile!! We made beef fajitas with it and they were inedible (to us). Tesco still do normally packaged mince

evilkitten · 01/07/2024 23:08

It’s awful. I changed my weekly shop from Sainsbury to Tesco a while ago - pretty much entirely because of the new squashed mince packaging.

TheSmallAssassin · 01/07/2024 23:11

TipsyKoala · 01/07/2024 17:53

Yes I found this. From Lidl, vacuum packed but I thought would be good quality as it’s grass fed. When I cooked it it just formed big lumps which I had to break up with a spoon. It seems to be ground so fine it’s become meat mush.

Most British beef is grass fed, it's nothing special here.

GenerousGardener · 01/07/2024 23:21

I use it all the time. It’s no different to how it used to be. Not one person in my household has complained. You just need to stir it a bit more when cooking it.

lashy · 01/07/2024 23:36

Oh no! I bought a pack from Sainsbury the other day (having never seen it packaged like that before) and am planning cooking it tomorrow.
Hope it cooks ok.

LadyFeatheringt0n · 01/07/2024 23:46

Its compressed too much and i find i have to work hard to break up the lumps.

I mainly use it for bolognese which i cook for ages so that does get it where it needs to be. But it feels stupid to replace largely recyclable packing with non recyclable film and reduce the quality of the product. They should go back to having a meat counter where people could take their own tubs etc

RebelMoon · 01/07/2024 23:56

Awful stuff. I'm not convinced it's any better for the environment either since the soft plastic will end up in the bin most of the time. I get mince from Morrisons these days, they've stuck with the old style packaging for now, as have Tesco.

Tarkan · 02/07/2024 00:05

Yes to it not being recyclable near me either. It's actually caused more waste in our house which is why I've gone back to the butcher.

Our butchers are decently priced and do deliver but they're also closer to my house than the supermarkets are so I'm lucky there. We also find their meat is more filling so I can either make a meal with less meat and make it go further or we have something with plenty of leftovers which is handy for DH for work. It doesn't shrink anywhere near the same way as supermarket meat does.

The last time I was in I spent £33 and got 1lb of steak mince, 1lb of steak sausages, 4 steak burgers (DH would normally have 2 supermarket ones easily but only just managed 1.5 of these), 6 rashers of really nice thick bacon, 4 massive chicken breasts that weren't full of water, 1lb of marinated chicken for stir fry, and a steak round which I served for 3 of us but would probably have been better for 4 as there was a lot of meat in it. It's honestly not much pricier than I would be for the same in the supermarket and I would have to pay for a taxi home from there compared to the butcher.

Cheesecakelunch · 02/07/2024 00:06

I actually prefer it. Takes more elbow grease but I've found it makes a much smoother bolognese. Can't stand the tough little strands of mince.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 02/07/2024 00:08

CointreauVersial · 01/07/2024 22:57

I buy the Taste the Difference mince which is vacuum packed, I cut open the packaging round 3 sides and it comes out easily, then fry it off at high heat as usual while separating the bits till brown with a wooden spatula as I would with any other mince, it's perfectly fine, I don't know what people are fussing about.
