Omg what the hell were they thinking.
Just tried making bolognaise with it. It's direct separate in the same way, and is just big lumps. 😬

Wow. I actually prefer it. Less plastic waste, less room in fridge or freezer, tastes the same to us.

Yeah, it's shit isn't it? Uses less plastic but it's completely non-recyclable!

Floppy plastic is recyclable at the big supermarkets. My Sainsbury's has a collection point outside.

Oblomov24 · 01/07/2024 20:02

I hate it with a passion. I've stopped buying it.

magnoliablooms · 01/07/2024 20:03

Anything I can do to reduce the carbon impact of beef is appreciated. I have it very rarely and don't notice an impact on the texture.

Oblomov24 · 01/07/2024 20:04

Have sales not dropped? Are they do stupid that they just don't care?

hot2trotter · 01/07/2024 20:05

Unfortunately had the same experience with Asda mince on Sunday. Trying to make a chilli con carne. I struggle with wrist pain so trying to break up the lumps was agony. My friend suggested using a potato masher but that also hurt. Needless to say I won't be buying it again - just hope that all supermarkets don't follow suit (have a feeling they will).

Mrsdyna · 01/07/2024 20:09

Go to the butcher and ask them to mince you actual meat there and then. It's what I do.

SauvignonBlanche · 01/07/2024 20:13

I can’t bear the look of it so much that I’ve no idea about the taste as I just switched to Aldi.

FpTr3952fHp · 01/07/2024 20:15

Morrisons still sell proper mince.

theredspindletree · 01/07/2024 20:18

I've only bought the tiny 250g packets recently which weren't so bad but I was making a large lasagne recently so got the 500g and it was awful.. I had to extrude it from the packet and put it in two batches to break it up - won't do that again

Snowpaw · 01/07/2024 18:33

I haven't noticed a difference in taste or texture to be honest. Granted it is a bit more of a faff to get it broken up but thats the only down side for me. Hasn't stopped me buying it.

Also agree.

I wasn’t keen when they first changed the packaging but we actually can’t tell a difference. I tend to use it for chilli/bolognese/lasagne and usually cook it for a long time. Breaking it up is a good workout though!

icebearforpresident · 01/07/2024 20:58

Break it up with a whisk, honestly it makes it much easier. Once it’s broken up the texture and taste is the exact same.

This and the receipt scanning machine to accuse all the paying customers of being shoplifters are why I stopped going to Sainsbury's

I'm with you on the receipt thing. Seriously annoying.

Wolfiefan · 01/07/2024 21:02

It’s grim. I won’t buy it. And nowhere here recycles that plastic either.

Lokshen · 01/07/2024 21:04

emerald1981 · 01/07/2024 19:00

I buy the frozen mince now. So handy to have in and it is nicely minced like pellets. So no big lumps.

I find this just goes to paste though. I'm sure they pump it full of water for freezing

Dbank · 01/07/2024 21:07

Hate it and shop at Waitrose or butchers instead. It isn't "normal mince" in a vacuum pack it's some form of meat slime.

Amazed they are still trying to sell it,

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 01/07/2024 21:11

I haven't tried sainsburys but Hello fresh and lidl beef mince is vacuum packed and seems fine to me? I'm intrigued

Katemax82 · 01/07/2024 21:12

I hate it too, aldi and home bargains do it in the old style package (not sure if tesco do but Jack's at my local shop does) I still use it but it gives annoying grainy chilli and only really works well in a lasagne

Singersong · 01/07/2024 21:14

I don't know why anyone still buys supermarket meat to be honest.

Littleguggi · 01/07/2024 21:16

It's actually gross 🤢

Hotpolarbear · 01/07/2024 21:16

We don't mind it now we've worked out the best way to cook it. Don't try and break it up into small pieces to start with. Let it cook briefly and then break it up. Works well and can't tell the difference now

mrsm43s · 01/07/2024 21:21

I squidge it around in the packet before opening to break it all up, and can't tell the difference between it and the old style mince once cooked. Happy to be reducing packaging and doing something good for the planet. I can't really think of any dishes that I cook that I wouldn't be either sliding it tight together (meatballs, burgers, koftas), or cooking it for a long time so it became silky (ragu, bolognese, cottage pie, chilli, curry).

YellowHairband · 01/07/2024 21:25

I've not noticed a particular issue with it once cooked - I tend to use mince for things I cook for a really long time though.
But I hate it. Getting it out of the packet is disgusting, you end up clawing it out with your hands, and then you have to break it all up and it's all stuck in lumps and takes ages.

And packaging isn't recyclable, whereas before the solid base bit of the packet was, it was only the film on top which wasn't!
