Falling birth rate v immigration UK

TripBalzac · 01/07/2024 11:25

I’m missing something obvious, probably, but why isn’t immigration the solution to the falling birth rate?

OP posts:

@Carebearsonmybed

Within the decade half of English primary school pupils will be born outside the UK. So in 80 years most of the population will have been born outside the UK?!

Where did you read this?

JHound · 14/10/2024 10:28

caringcarer · 02/07/2024 10:13

Immigrants are more likely to have more DC often 4 or 5 and so the majority become net takers not net contributors. How does that benefit the economy?

Why do you assume that those children will be net recipients not contributors?

There's an MC liberal viewpoint that caring about maintaining a national culture and identity is somehow veiled racism, and yet these same people will go on holiday around the world and love the different cultures they encounter. They'd be the first to complain if everywhere they went on their exotic holidays had lost all their culture and customs. Most people in the world identify strongly with their own culture and want it to continue. This doesn't make them racist.

The country will always reflect the culture of the majority of people living there.

These things naturally evolve over time but rapid population change can bring about more tensions and dissatisfaction amongst the native population - it's not exclusive to the UK.

This is very true. There has been rapid demographic shift in many European countries and that has directly lead to both some of the results in the recent EU elections, and what is now happening in France.

Sweden is an interesting example of how the rapid demographic shift has had a large negative knock-on with gun crime statistics in some areas, for instance.

But are the people being referred to immigrants or Swedes (I.e people born in Sweden.)

There is often a lazy habit of blaming everything on immigration while ignoring that some sub-cultures were not imported but actually cultivated in the “host nation”.

JHound · 14/10/2024 10:34

I also think for a lot of people it’s not numbers. If we had the exact same numbers as now but they were all white Swedes / white Australian (for example). Most would be fine.

You can see that with the vitriol typically aimed at refugees which was completely absent in discussions of Ukrainian refugees.

YourRoseLurker · 14/10/2024 10:36

This is a disaster waiting to happen. You’ll end up a country where the population has a massive difference on views such as religion; freedom of speech; gay rights. It’s an absolute disaster. A country only works where the majority share the same values.
I am saving up so much children can move somewhere else when they are older.

WTF were their gov thinking of - incredible really.

The Swedes are paying a heavy price for thrir government going 'woke' essentially. Incredibly naive.

I always love people who are horrified at the thought of immigration to their country….

……and so go to become an immigrant in somebody else’s county 😀😂.

And why do people assume culture is like something in the blood stream. Many migrants move to new countries and take on the habits and practices of their “new” country. And if they don’t immediately their kids, grandkids, great grand kids etc definitely do.

Authoritarian faiths - that’s it! The description I’ve been looking for!!

A non religious country has many incomers with A Fs naturally the culture will move from the old to the demands of the new.
Also where I live the foreign students are getting jobs in the U.K. after achieving their degrees which is good, right, but probably accepting lower salaries than U.K. born students - and immigration standing at 700,000 most of whom are students that must have effects on jobs and pay.

Why do you think foreign students will accept jobs on lower pay?

JHound · 14/10/2024 10:50

lovelyjubblys · 02/07/2024 09:55

there's a religiously agnostic/ambivalent population in the UK. What concerns me, as a non religious person, is that with increased immigration we're also increasing the population with followers of authoritarian faiths. This worries me, as a non religious person.

I will admit I am rather bemused when I see loudly shouting Christian preachers, clearly of West African nationality - loudly preaching the beauty of following Christ.

I often see it as them returning to us then Christianity we went and proselytised to them in the first place! 😂

What exactly is your indigenous culture? What’s now the UK has been a melting pot of immigrants for thousands of years.

Halfemptyhalfling · 14/10/2024 10:56

Problem is that immigrants can be single men on minimum wage in a shared house saving for a nice house in their own country and a great future. People here in minimum wage will be renting forever (,more and more from someone from a different culture who came in and bought housing)

When we were in the EU new labour gave dentists less money so white British dentists went private but nhs was fine because dentists came from EU Greece particularly. Now we have left EU there are no NHS dentists and we are paying £100s for private dental treatment and most children not seeing a dentist. If not able to have easy immigration from EU government would have had to change the amount paid to dentists. So native population loses out.

Also a lot of the cultures coming in are more misogynistic. British men are now copying and also being more misogynistic (although some of this to do with internet.) Also middle class coming in from countries without good state education and healthcare and local government won't necessarily value them ( if doing well themselves). White British not paid enough for private schools and healthcare. Also those coming in will have religious based social lives and youth events while increasingly atheist white British population have less and less from local council.

Saw a very good bbc documentary years ago on the effect of people in the north seeing roads where they used to live and visit granny now completely taken over by a different culture (so not mixing). I didn't really understand the problem before then.

Oh but its OK because her children will be the nice sort of immigrants (and of course, British people are allowed to go wherever they want).

I was a member of a British “expats” (I.e. immigrants) when I lived overseas and this kind of attitude was rife.

I laughed each and everytime.

LOL!

I have heard of blaming everything on immigrants but this takes the cake.

Yes Britain was a feminist Utopia and then those pesky immigrants came over and because British men are so weak and pathetic they just decided to start “copying” their misogyny. Before that every aspect of British society had complete, total gender equity, no domestic violence, no sexual assaults, no women abandoned to raise kids alone, no sexism, no objectification of women in print and media and complete sharing of all domestic and emotional labour.

😆

So many sweeping statements and generalisations in one post. So even misogyny in white men is now being blamed on immigrants?? Interesting.
I live in Leeds, fairly close to an area where nearly all businesses are owned by ethnic minorities- grocery stores, bakers, restaurants etc. I've never seen this as a problem. In fact, I go out of my way to go there and buy all the delicious foods.
There are plenty of places where most people are white (even in a very diverse city like Leeds) should certain people wish to avoid brown faces.

The blaming misogyny among white men on immigrants was really the bit that took my breath away.

Whenever literally EVERY societal problem is apparently the fault of immigrants and their influences no wonder we have riots and so much anti-immigrant sentiment. It’s like Starkey, back in 2011 claiming white rioters were actually “becoming black”.

It hasn’t been a melting pot for thousands of years. Look at the immigration levels from 1920 to the present day, it was a trickle until the 2000s

Blueskies3 · 14/10/2024 11:36

I would have loved a third, but finances and time stopped us. I didn't want to be overstretched and busy, overwhelmed with work etc and so only had two.

Incorrect - up to 40% of Brits share DNA with our Anglo Saxon invaders. The Anglosaxons first tried to invade britain in the 5th century but were driven away by our other invaders, the Romans. They returned not long after.
We've also invaded by the Vikings, Normans and the Celts - all who have shaped our DNA.
We are a mongrel nation and have been for over 2000 years.

BorgQueen · 14/10/2024 11:51

Fewer people will mean less need for housing and less resources consumed.
We are keeping more people alive when they should be long gone, all those dementia patients being pumped full of antibiotics / vaccines for example. I don’t know why anyone would want to end their days like that.
Why would a population of under 50m be a problem? Much more of industry is mechanised than before WW2, so less need for workers. We certainly don’t need undocumented and illegal migrants.
We should be more or less self sufficient in food production, but the globalists don’t want that. It’s about time we protected ourselves before it’s too late. War and famine will come to the West within my lifetime.

‘Mongrel nation’ what a way to say it

Which countries are not this? The top ones if too many to mention

It's funny, I hear about this falling birth rate all the time but yet when someone like myself chooses to have a larger than average family I get berated, insulted and abused verbally when out with my children.

What exactly is it that people want?
