My Mum had a Chronic Condition from when I was 12 years old that led to her becoming disabled. The experience of growing up with a disabled parent and supporting her once I became an adult inspired me to want to become an Occupational Therapist.

I enrolled on a Degree Course three years ago, and today at the Grand age of 47 I've found out that achieved a First Class Degree in OT. Sadly, my Mum who was my biggest supporter in my re-training passed away suddenly three months ago so never got to see this day.

I'm soon going to be working in Older Adults Mental Health and hoping that my own life experiences will make be a kind, understanding and empathetic OT.
Hope you don't mind me sharing. I've told my children and husband but wanted someone else to tell!

Shit, I'm crying now. Your mum sounds lovely.

Bless you. She really was such a beautiful spirit. She cared so much about other people and always tried to believe the best of everyone. Sometimes it was misguided because she always imagined that everyone else thought the same way about fairness etc as she did. She was lovely and her legacy and the person she was will carry me on to my new role. I never went into this role for money. I used to work in IT from the 90's onwards and the earnings were good. My motivations for working in OT has always based on social justice and what i had experienced as an adult child of a person with disabilities.

What lovely news! As a parent to a child with dyspraxia, we love OT's and all their knowledge and understanding. They have helped our son beyond measure, giving us fun things to do to develop skills - and helped us stick up for his right to a suitable education too.

You'll be brilliant, and so appreciated by the people you work with and their families. Flowers

Well done you! You will make such a difference to peoples' lives.

I am retraining at 49 (to be a specialist dyslexia teacher), and have 1 more essay left to go. I know how dedicated you need to be. I also watched 1001 people graduate today (mainly women, mainly nurses) at our Uni and the sense of achievement was palpable. I felt so very proud of them.
