My Mum had a Chronic Condition from when I was 12 years old that led to her becoming disabled. The experience of growing up with a disabled parent and supporting her once I became an adult inspired me to want to become an Occupational Therapist.

I enrolled on a Degree Course three years ago, and today at the Grand age of 47 I've found out that achieved a First Class Degree in OT. Sadly, my Mum who was my biggest supporter in my re-training passed away suddenly three months ago so never got to see this day.

I'm soon going to be working in Older Adults Mental Health and hoping that my own life experiences will make be a kind, understanding and empathetic OT.
Hope you don't mind me sharing. I've told my children and husband but wanted someone else to tell!

Massive well done OP. Thank you so much for sharing your incredible news. I hope you are really proud of yourself and everything that you’ve achieved, especially considering how awful the last few months must have been. I suspect your new employer is very lucky to have you and your life experiences and empathy will make an enormous difference to your clients. Congratulations!

@sleeptight1 I am chuffed. The OT's I've met and who have helped me so much with first my Mum and then my Dad were brilliant people and the service is excellent - they're unsung heroes in my book. OT's really do get shit done! Amazing profession. You'll be bloody ace and I'll bet your mum is proud.

sleeptight1 · 28/06/2024 17:02

Once you've passed your OT degree you have to register with HCPC to enable you to practice as a registered OT. You complete the forms and then you get your pin number and your name is on the register. Woohoo

My Mum was such a happy, sweet and kind person and just got so happy about every little thing. I never heard her say anything negative about anyone.

Any good news and she would squeal with delight and put her hands over her face as if she couldn't bear the loveliness of the news.

She was like that even with people that she didn't know- she wished the best of everyone, even with people she didn't know. She would see a sad documentary and cry her eyes out for the people involved.

I feel that every person who has responded to this message has her spirit - you felt gladness for a person you didn't even know. ❤Bless you all.

I couldn't wait to be registered as I was going to ask Mum to type my name into the 'search for a professional' section as she would have been over the moon to see my name pop up.😂
Instead - I will be asking every other family member!!
