To think about botox

How common is botox and how haggard does it make you look when your older?
I've been thinking of getting a bit as I have a deep line on my forehead but partner said i will regret it when I'm older. I am 32 just now. I would obviously only be getting a few top ups a year. I know people can look terrible after but they are the people who get loads but does a few top ups a year really make you look that bad when your older ? I would maybe get some around my eyes too to hide the wrinkles lol

I've had it twice. I like the reduction in forehead wrinkles but mine seems to wear off after 3 months. It's a bit expensive to maintain.

I go through phases of 'why the hell should I feel the need to get rid of my wrinkles'
And 'oh god, i have much deeper wrinkles than anyone else'

I wouldn't have thought they'd make you look haggard when older. Just go for a light touch.

Gingerdancedbackwards · 27/06/2024 06:39

Why?
Why are you not happy to age gently and gracefully?
Why not feel that this is just part of life?
You are going to age, wither and finally die.
Immobilising your face won't stop that.
And unless you can sort your hands and neck, it will always be obvious how old you really are (yes, talking about you, Madonna!)

Gilbertwasawuss · 27/06/2024 06:51

Botox is amazing.
I have very hooded eyes and also a very asymmetrical face.

One eye is smaller and one brow a lot lower!

Properly placed botox gives my brows more symmetry and lifts them slightly so I am not so insecure and I have even stopped looking at getting an upper bleph.

A lot of people I know get a little bit of botox in "problem" areas, like if they are very frowny and have a deep crease between eyebrows.

Botox just slowly wears off and you go back to how you were before you got it. But that's the point, things don't get WORSE.

You are kind of freezing time and by stopping those muscles from creating the wrinkles, you are actively preventing/decreasing them.

You don't look worse if you stop getting it.

Botox is much more user friendly than filler which does build up and affect someone's face long term.

Personally, I think botox is amazing. Even my husband says that when I have it I just look a bit more awake/refreshed/younger.

I get it twice a year :)

Illpickthatup · 27/06/2024 07:05

I'm also considering it at 36. I don't really have deep wrinkles but can I have some fine lines on my forehead. I've started using tretinoin cream and seen a big improvement already so I'm just going to stick with that for now.

HangingOver · 27/06/2024 07:07

I love Botox lol I'm 36 and started getting it before the lines really took hold. It's expensive though, it wears of quick.

Surprisedmystified · 27/06/2024 07:09

I think good on your partner for trying to dissuade you from this.
So sad that women of your age and much younger are so worried about something that is so natural and inevitable: actually getting older.
When you sit and stare in a mirror inevitably you notice every crease, wrinkle and perceived fault. But in reality for the most part other people don't even notice or see them.
Do you have a good skin care regime, drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep and eat healthily? Because these can work wonders for your skin without the need for botox.

Summerhillsquare · 27/06/2024 07:09

I haven't stopped yet but I can't see how it makes things worse down the line? That doesn't make sense.

TheFlis · 27/06/2024 07:12

I’m a bit older than you but started Botox last year just for one fairly deep vertical line between my eyes brows that was very noticeable and really aged me. I had 2 lots 4 months apart, the next lot after another 5 months, and now it has been 7 months and no sign of the line coming back at all! 100% worth it for me.

Ski2025 · 27/06/2024 07:16

It is the ‘botox alienised’ look that puts me off.

I know medically it is used for so many things and the PP who uses it to fix her face symmetry makes a good point.

I am not against it just scared to look like an alien.

charitynamechange · 27/06/2024 07:22

36?? I have a 26 year old daughter and fear for her generation.
I'm not having botox simply because I'd rather she saw her mother happy enough with her aging face. And I am, mostly.

But to answer your question - how common? It depends where you live I think. When I go to London and other cities it's noticeable everywhere. i think if you live in that environment it passes you by. Where i live faces look entirely different! Just returned from provincial France and Spain, and there too there is little evidence - lovely variety. And yes, it can be very obvious - try standing outside Selfridges on Oxford and looking at the women's faces. Incredible!

UghFletcher · 27/06/2024 07:28

I'm 38 and have had Botox for the last couple of years.

For me it gives me confidence, I had a few deep lines on my forehead and the eleven lines between my eyebrows. To me they were really pronounced but maybe because I spend my life on video calls and see it really clearly (I don't notice it on anyone else btw)

It was expensive to begin with - topping up every 3 months but a couple of years down the line I can stretch that to 4-5 months between top ups.

If you want to - go for it - at the end of the day it wears off if you don't like it. make sure you find a reputable aesthetician! Good luck

olivehater · 27/06/2024 07:31

Started at 38 and been doing it for 4 years. Initially every 5 months but now every 9-10 months. I like it best when it is starting to wear off a bit. I look fresher when I have had it but there is no question that some facial movements look slightly less natural when taking.
I have stopped the 11s in their tracks and they are now less prominent than when I started. I left it 10months last time and they never came back to what they were originally. No I did not look more haggard than when I started.
I pay for two areas but spread over three. So slightly less than most which I prefer. Around the eyes is also fab and a good starter and prob the most subtle place to start if you were going to pick one area.

Do you colour your hair or wear makeup, ever where heels, remove any body or facial hair or buy new fashions?
If so Why?
Why do you feel the need to embellish yourself or change anything and not just enjoy looking natural without artificial enhancements?

Gingerdancedbackwards · 27/06/2024 16:11

The answer is no to all.
Happily grey
Happily trainered with most of my fabulous clothes, which are not necessarily fashionable/ transient
I don't feel the need to look 'younger' by filing my face with a toxin.
Hapoy in my skin, and no issues with finding frirnds or attracting a 'mate' if I wanted to
Sorry to piss on your 'clever' post

olivehater · 27/06/2024 18:19

Good for you ginger. That’s your perogative. Why do you care so much that other women might think differently to you. It doesn’t make you superior just different.

TaylorBrown · 27/06/2024 23:36

Thank you for all your answeres I think I will maybe bite the bullet and go for it. I just feel/look constantly drained sinse I've had the little one and I feel I need to do something for me to feel good again. I am also trying to lose weight so this will go nicely with that. Thanks everyone.

I don't care
This is aibu
The op asked about botox
I proffered an opinion, asking op why she would want to stuff her face with Botulism toxin raather than growing old gracefully
I had a sarky reply asking if i dye my hair, etc
I replied that I don't
Ffs - someone asks 'aibu', people respond, then PPs pile-on because your response doesn't accord with theirs

Maytorain · 28/06/2024 06:40

It brilliant. You won’t look odd if you go to a good injector. Don’t pay peanuts to a beauty salon, go to a medical professional.

It’s so common with the people I know in my circle.
You can try it, and if you don’t like it, it wears off on 3-5 months.

Octaviaaa · 28/06/2024 07:02

I am your age and it's the best thing I've ever done! It is ultimately your choice but I've had a small amount on my forehead, frown lines and crow's feet for the last year or so as a preventative measure. They always ensure that I have enough movement and I'm not frozen. Please do not go for top ups every 3 months. Instead wait for 6 months to restore full movement back before going for another.

I always receive compliments about my skin. I recommend using factor 50 every day on your face and neck alongside tretinoin in the evening-I pay a monthly subscription to Dermatica. I understand why some people want to "grow old gracefully" but realistically not a lot of women want grey hair and wrinkles at the tender age of 32!

Powderblue1 · 28/06/2024 07:06

I started last year, just in my frown lines as I've always naturally frowned and squinted and had a deep line. I also recently had it around my eyes and I really like it. It prevents further wrinkles by softening the area. I would recommend to anyone considering it.

I do have a good skincare routine too and always look after my skin on my face, neck and décolletage

curious79 · 28/06/2024 07:07

Do it! My sister used to have most awful frown. Botox killed it. The aging thing in my view is her fillers

jeaux90 · 28/06/2024 07:10

I'm 52 been having Botox and fillers for about 5 years.

The two deep vertical lines on my forehead had filler 5 years ago and I have not had to have them re-done as I have regular Botox there.

It has made a massive difference.

And honestly I only do it to keep up the performance of femininity that society expects, I am senior at work and a lone parent, so the sole provider. Keeping my career going (with confidence) is really important

Does it jar with my feminist principles? Yes.

Do I look and feel better? Yes

Pippa12 · 28/06/2024 07:12

I’ve had Botox for the last 12months and love it. I still have movement in my eyebrow but I look and feel fresher. I suppose it depends on the person, totally respect those who don’t want it and want to age naturally. I don’t if I’m honest.

Inthesummertimewhen · 28/06/2024 07:29

@Gilbertwasawuss that's interesting my eyes are getting more hooded etc

SwedeCarrotLimes · 28/06/2024 07:29

It seems most PP who've had botox have had it done on 1 or 2 wrinkles that have appeared. What happens when these lines and wrinkles increase in abundance, evenutally exponentially? I find it hard to believe that someone who can't cope with a couple of ageing lines is going to happily accept a barrage of lines over time? More likely they will increase their botox usage in an attempt to ward them off.

Research has shown prolonged use can cause atrophy of facial muscles, so those PP say it can't make you look worse are incorrect (unless they mean using it only a handful of times). But I wonder how many people that jump on the botox merry-go-round only use it a few times. If this thread is anything to go by most people who've had it are hooked.
