… to object to the funeral parlour unloading body bags at the end of my street?

There’s a row of shops at right angles to our street, where the back entrances face onto a small cut through road and the back alley between rows of houses. One of these shops is a funeral parlour, which has recently expanded. They now park two massive hearses in the shared alley, and frequently ask us to move our car so they can fit the hearse through the narrow road if we park there (it’s a public street and the only way we can access the back of our house) They also load and unload body bags (with bodies in!) from the back of the private ambulance in the public street, and my DD4 asks what’s in the bags, which is… not a fun chat? My DS11 hates it and won’t walk round the back as its “too creepy”. Not only this, but they leave bags of rubbish out on the street which the seagulls get into and encourage rats. I’ve tried complaining to the council, but they say the only thing they can do is “register my complaint” with the bin collection service. AIBU to think a small terrace shop isn’t the place to run a funeral parlour from, especially if there’s no room to privately unload body bags?

I should think body tissue and fluids etc

Doubtful. Unless they’re carrying out autopsies.

IndigoLaFaye · 29/06/2024 18:52

I don’t really get the disrespectful thing. It’s not like you can see anything. My father has passed away and so long as he wasn’t tossed around I don’t see an issue - but each to their own I guess

that would be clinical waste and disposed of appropriately. I am guessing its the usual kind of waste that any business would generate. We have a seagull waste problem here, they will even come for stuff like crisp bags and empty frozen pizza boxes unless they are double sealed (no wheely bins) so I am guessing its stuff like lunch rubbish. If clinical waste is being left to be disposed of with domestic type rubbish, that is a HUGE issue, but I doubt it.

Beautiful3 · 29/06/2024 19:53

They shouldn't be parking in a shared alleyway. It's for access, not for parking. I'd refuse to move my car, as long as I was legally parked.

Beautiful3 · 29/06/2024 19:54

I'd report their clinical waste to the council.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/06/2024 19:58

Well carrying them from the hearse in their body bags one thing. They’re dead they can’t walk in the funeral parlor themselves and get back in their coffins can they. (Well I hope not) 🤣. It’s the seagulls round the rubbish bags that would concern me, though.

What clinical waste? You just made that up.

Yes absolutely! Clinical waste would have to be disposed of per protocol and any human remains etc would be likely be incinerated. They ABSOLUTELY would not be put in general waste

Milkand2sugarsplease · 30/06/2024 15:36

The only bit i'd object to is the parking issue.

If you're parked legally, don't always be available to move your car when they ask. They'll have to make alternative, better suited, arrangements.

CollyBobble · 30/06/2024 15:41

The bodies in bags are not something to be hidden and moved under the cover of darkness. That you are being ridiculous about.

The rubbish though, you can complain about.

Tlolljs · 30/06/2024 15:46

I think the planning office is the way to go.
The business has obviously grown too big to be suitable for that location. They should have had planning for their expansion. See what they say.

The funeral parlour has been there before op says it's just bigger.

That’s not what she said…

Must admit I wouldn’t want to live where I could see body bags being removed from a hearse. Also I can understand children being a bit upset about this.
When my father in law died at home in bed the children said goodbye to him in familiar surroundings and were fine, however seeing bodies in body bags may seem strange to a child.
As a nurse I dealt with a lot of people at end of life and in death. Funeral directors were always discreet and respectful but if a patient did witness anything they mostly got distressed.
It’s a natural part of living but I wouldn’t want it on my street. It’s better if undertakers are in a more isolated area where they can be more discreet.

Why have you just resurrected this thread from the dead (ahem) when there is an almost identical one posted today?

NormasArse · 12/03/2026 10:00

It sounds as though they need to scale back their operation, or look for new premises. None of that sounds ideal.

NormasArse · 12/03/2026 10:01

Oh- zombie thread 🙄

Have you been in to talk to them?

I think that you need to say to them what you have said on here.

  1. we are concerned that they are unloading body bags in public.
  2. they ahve taken over the back road so we can no longer park, this was not an issue for 8 years and now is and we will no longer move our cars to accommodate the hearse, it shouldn't be there, we should not have to do that .
  3. rubbish bags are attracting seagulls and rats and they need to organise better refuse storage etc.

A polite conversation may get you quite a long way, no business wants to upset the locals. If that doesn't work then put it in writing and take it up wiht the council.

This and get some time dated photos so that there can be no denial and the council can clearly see what you find a problem.
