Work calls on train

Lifesucks2024 · 25/06/2024 06:40

I'm tired and crabby this morning so I might be being unreasonable but I'm frustrated by someone on a loud work call at 6.37am on the train I'm on. AIBU to think she should go in the vestibule or wait until a more normal time to make her work call?

Quiet carriage OP if there is one. I also hate people who do this

Unfortunately, there's no quiet carriage.

I raise you the very loud snoring and snorting from the man in front of me. I forgot my airbuds and the coffee shop was shut.

I usually enjoy my office days...

To cheer you up, watch clips of Bob Mortimer's "Man on Train". So accurate!

Makes no difference. People do this in the "quiet carriage", too. The only people who keep quiet are those who respect other people, and there are very, very few of those.

Think you're probably right

I'm constantly surprised by the number of people willing to have work calls, with potentially sensitive information, in public places.

I was once entertained on a train by a man discussing on the phone how one of his team had been arrested and the fall out from it... a lot of identifying information)

Edited

Agreed. It's a small world and could potentially get someone in bother.

Take your phone out, pretend to make a call and start talking very loudly. They won't be able to focus on their call and will hopefully move.

I haven't got the energy. I feel like shit.

Calls generally are very rude, unless quick. And I’m always surprised how much sensitive work related stuff I overhear! And personal stuff!

Goingasteady30 · 25/06/2024 07:38

It's unprofessional in my opinion. They could be discussing confidential information and company policies etc that anyone could eavesdrop.

Tagyoureit · 25/06/2024 07:39

Work call at 6.47am is just obscene!

AmandaHoldensLips · 25/06/2024 08:13

I'm the woman who shouted at a man on a train, "HAVE I BOUGHT A TICKET TO YOUR BLOODY OFFICE????"

I agree with you OP. There should be a special carriage for all those who want to do loud work on early morning trains. I commute a fair distance and it’s my quiet time so I don’t need to listen to your work calls before 8am. Can I add aggressive laptop typists too?

Why are you on a train then spreading your germs about? Exactly why I hate going by train. You and your germs would annoy me more than a man on his phone.

Never seemed to make a difference when I travelled. I think many thought the benefit of the quiet carriage was so they could make their calls in peace.

Did have a lady call her office over a disciplinary she was taking part in later that day, telling her colleague she was looking forward to it as she never like him and wanted a reason to get rid of him. I did overhear someone I knew arranging to meet her affair partner for an overnight assignation.

Most however are I'll be a little late or the trains on time.

Minesril · 25/06/2024 08:28

Yes! I bloody hate people bashing their laptops on the train. I work on confidential material so I can't work on the train, but even if I could I wouldn't.

I'm not ill. I haven't slept and I'm shattered. Not that I need to justify myself.

Tell him you work for one of his competitors and are listening to every word he says.

Avatartar · 25/06/2024 08:30

If you can see her face, can you catch her eye then nod and shake your head in time to her comments as if she’s talking to you? Probably won’t get the hint but worth a try

I feel absolutely awful this morning, but as far as I'm aware period pains aren't contagious 😆

Ogonek · 25/06/2024 08:40

YANBU. An entire train carriage I was on, in rush hour, was once party to a guy's (full volume) job interview, complete with confident bigging-up of his achievements and abilities. You could feel the entire carriage cringing.

Another time I learned more than I wanted to know about a court case as one of the legal team shared the details at extreme length and volume. At least that time it was off-peak and there was only me and maybe a couple of other people within earshot, but I was seriously contemplating ringing and making a complaint should enough identifying details be revealed. It was totally unethical.

TheCadoganArms · 25/06/2024 08:44

It's not just on trains, 'work calls' seem to have infiltrated other typical non work environments be it the supermarket, coffee shop, the gym etc. Most of the time it just smacks of 'look at me, I'm a very important business person' as opposed to the reality of them coming across as a poundshop Alan Sugar.
