Work calls on train

I'm tired and crabby this morning so I might be being unreasonable but I'm frustrated by someone on a loud work call at 6.37am on the train I'm on. AIBU to think she should go in the vestibule or wait until a more normal time to make her work call?

As someone who often has to take work calls at unsociable hours due to time differences, it would be even worse to have to be in the office at the time and I am lucky that I almost exclusively work from home. However, I don’t think they should be noisy or contain any sensitive/identifying information.

And if you're in public space being considerate of the other people using it comes with the territory as well. At least, it does for some people.

People are allowed to talk and have phone calls, which is what the OP is complaining about.

EBearhug · 25/06/2024 12:27

Other people talking is fine. I am quite happy to listen in if it's interesting. But I suspect not all their employers would be.

I'm the woman who shouted at a man on a train, "HAVE I BOUGHT A TICKET TO YOUR BLOODY OFFICE????"

I'm the pregnant woman who stood up and shouted at a man on a phone at a similarly early hour

"You are disturbing the whole carriage! Haven't you noticed no one else is making a sound?"

He hadn't. Noone else was willing to stand up but once I did I got a round of applause.

He turned his phone off after that.

UnctuousUnicorns · 25/06/2024 12:31

Some people on public transport are just clueless, selfish a-holes. I was on an overnight bus once, trying (unsuccessfully) to get some kip. Some tosser was talking on his phone as loud as if it were three in the afternoon, not three in the bloody morning. And some other wanker kept clanging their foot rest over and over. What the fuck is wrong with some people! 🙄

I didn't say they weren't but it was 6.30 in the bloody morning and I was shattered. Personally, I wouldn't do it - I think it's antisocial.

There is a world of difference between "Hi love, I'm on 5.45 train....yep......should be there for 6.30.....yep.....looking forward to it as well....see you soon" and "Hi David, I have the south western regions sales report through and I would like to discuss chapters 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14....After that we need to review resource histograms for the next period.......blah blah"

But the point still stands that people having phone calls on trains comes with the territory,.

I don't disagree it's shit and annoying, but it's a public space and you have to expect it and to a large degree put up with it.

But no! If we were all on our bloody phones, it would be chaos!

Actually I don't put up with crap behaviour on public transport and I'm not sure why the majority have to 'put up with' the antisocial behaviour of the minority. I'm glad a few others on this thread feel the same way.

I once heard about a bloke who was so indiscreet that one of the other passengers overheard enough to phone him up, pretend to be the PA of the person he was meeting, and tell him that the meeting had been postponed by an hour.

Oh to be a fly on the wall.

Hats off to that passenger! 😀

It's scary how much you can find out from what people disclose in work conversations. The other evening I amused myself by Googling some of what 'Billy Big Balls' opposite was sharing with Jeff and Sarah. It didn't take long to find out who he was, where he worked, details around some of his colleagues and the project that he was responsible for costing SIX MILLION POUNDS (repeated several times so that we all knew how important he was).

Having a (slightly loud) phone call on a train is not unacceptable behaviour though.

It's not a black and white situation, as much as you want to make it so. It's a public setting, some degree of noise and "undesirable" behaviour has to be expected and it's unreasonable to expect otherwise.

But some degree of unacceptable behaviour is only possible because the vast majority of people behave in an acceptable and considerate way. So if the vast majority of people can manage to behave in a considerate way, then why not the very few people always fucking men engaging in the unacceptable behaviour too?

All journeys on public transport will have an element of background noise, low level chatter etc, that is to be expected, I don't expect total silence. Most people buy into the social contract of not being too loud, not making a disturbance or being irritating to fellow passengers. Common said annoyances are well documented and includes loud phone calls thar everyone can hear, it ceases to be normal humdrum background noise but a dominant distracting irritation. Kicking off at some new parent with a blabbing baby is unreasonable, asking someone to turn their loud music down or to stop shouting down their phone, perfectly reasonable.

Blouson · 25/06/2024 14:43

It has always happenned since the advent of mobiles. Usually a posh bloke in a loud voice. Some blokes reminds me of a fonejacker sketch

ABirdsEyeView · 25/06/2024 15:20

It's all very well to say that we have to put up with some people taking long business calls on the train, but they are only able to do it because everyone else is quiet enough for them to hear. What happens if the person opposite decides he's entitled to listen to his music at the same volume and the person next to him has an audiobook on the go and the woman behind would like to carry on the argument she's having with her husband etc.

Sometimes it's unavoidable but really people should try as much as possible to keep it to a minimum and not just conduct their daily business in exactly the same way they would if they were in an office or at home.

My favourite experience with this was watching this man rudely and performative berating some poor staff member about not having sold some stocks and how when he gets back into the office, he is going to make sure everyone will know how fucking incompetent she is, blah blah blah, - and his phone rang.
Someone just said “Oh, you fucking wanker.”
