WHERE is the sun?!! It is ludicrous, I don't remember a June like this for years and I keep depressing myself with the fucking BBC weather app. They promised sunshine and warmth and now they are saying rain, rain, rain. How on earth is anyone supposed to cope? I am going to Barcelona in a few weeks, and I am counting the seconds. AARGH!

I don’t really understand these sort of weather threads. Some people like warm weather and sun, some people hate it- none of us can do anything about any of it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Climate change has probably already been mentioned, but obviously it’s a factor. Our weather is likely to continue to get more extreme and more unpredictable. We can all help to look after the planet in small ways.

Poor weather can affect mental health, but unlike other things that can affect MH (work, relationships etc), we can’t do anything about the weather so the onus is on us really to find some sort of acceptance. Either that or just continue to get vexed every time the weather isn’t doing what we want it to.

My MH suffers in the winter- not the weather but the short daylight hours. There’s nothing I can do about that, apart from relocating to somewhere nearer the equator. I don’t really want to do that so instead I have to find strategies to help me get through a dark UK winter. There would be no point me coming onto MN to get angry about the fact it’s getting dark at 4pm

It is lovely in SE England today though, just in case no one’s mentioned that yet 😉

TBF though, as a later poster rightly identifies - it's the difference to what is the norm for the area at the time of year that's so depressing for the OP (and me, and others who get what she's complaining about). We're not saying "bloody November, it's cold and wet again, what's that about?" because we expect November to be cold and wet, just as we all know winter mornings and evenings are dark and so we have strategies to cope with that, be it appropriate clothing to stay warm and dry or a daylight simulation lamp and a Vit D supplement. But between late April and late June it's not unreasonable to expect some half-decent weather, some days of sunshine and warmth, even in the cooler and more northerly parts of the country overall. And this year that has been almost entirely lacking in a way it simply isn't in most years. Up until two weeks ago, the temperature in my part of the country was rarely reaching above 12 degrees, and a 14 deg. day was worthy of note, and it was just constantly grey. Of course we can't do anything to change it but it isn't usual or easily predictable (and a London/SE-centric media continually predicting 'heatwaves' and 'BBQ summers' doesn't help 🙄) so it's not so easy to be as calmly accepting of the disappointment of it as it is something that you know is definitely going to happen, like rain in November or getting dark at 4pm in December.

You don't say what country you live in to give perspective. Sunny and hot in Scotland :)

Not all of Scotland! I'm in the Western Isles, and it's really windy, but at least the wind has blown away the fog, and the rain has stopped for a while.

We don't usually have the best of the weather until the first week in July (although May is often lovely, weirdly), but it is usually better than this.

Totally get you OP. We are similar in Belfast in that our best and sunniest months are often May and June ("exam weather" means hot and sunny around gcse times!).. And this year has been just grim. Just grey and much cooler than normal. It's not about comparing to other hotter places it's about comparing your normal to this year and this year for some of us has been crap compared to our normal.
Not needing the heady heights of 20+ 🤣 just a bit of blue sky and temperatures of 16 - 18 would do us all rightly. Hold the faith.. Maybe this year it will be summer in July for us!
Ps Belfast is actually really lovely finally yesterday and today. I'll wave some your way!

Edited

Could you wave it 10 miles down the road please? It's dull and sticky here!!

Wonderfulstuff · 24/06/2024 16:40

It's really warm today down south... we are in sun defence mode with all the curtains and windows closed. If it makes you feel less envious I will be commuting in 30 degree heat by the middle of the week on sweaty overcrowded trains. I'd happily take cloudy and cool over that.

QuestionableMouse · 24/06/2024 16:41

27c currently in Hartlepool!

Agreed in South Hampshire. Every hour or so theres a break in the clouds and I rush out to the sun lounger only to find it goes in again and its back to dark grey.

I'm cross. and we've had the longest day so in the back of my mind we have shorter nights ( really noticeable by the end of August).

Well I'm also in south Hampshire - Southampton - and its been glorious sunshine since dawn! Odd that our weather could be so different in the same part of a county!

MsLuxLisbon · 24/06/2024 18:14

I have come back from my walk in a slightly better mood. The weather is warm,if not super sunny. For the people who just want to contradict everything an OP ever says, I hope you find satisfaction. Seriously. For everyone else, hang in there. We are at least warm, if not bathed in sunshine. My motto is not to let the morons grind me down!

I'm midway between Southampton and Portsmouth and it's been a fabulous day, really warm with the faintest breeze.

Tumbleweed101 · 24/06/2024 18:37

Finally found summer here in Suffolk but it has been long awaited, it's felt like it's rained continuously since last Nov. I have loads of sympathy for the areas still waiting for sunshine.

I am really sorry but that's like saying "Where's the sun?" in Reykjavik...

Just don't understand posts like these..

I'm in Blairgowrie - north of Glasgow - and its been 21C and sunny all day

Not where I am in Scotland.
Yes it's warm but not sunny at all. And tomorrow we have thunder and lightning forecast.
I'm with you op, the older I get the more I've realised the weather really affects my mood.

Sorenips11 · 24/06/2024 18:48

Cloudy in Devon but really warm and dear God, the humidity! Everything is sticky and my hair has done a Monica from friends. What I wouldn't give for a warm, sunny day with a gentle breeze. This slimy, wet heat doesn't count.

headstone · 24/06/2024 19:19

Finally clear blue skys , I did manage an outdoor swim earlier and it was glorious , the first time I wasn’t freezing getting out.

Chipsahoy · 24/06/2024 19:36

Beautiful here in north east Scotland. We had a fab May, beginning of June was cold but been lovely since last Wednesday. Baking today at 26c. Plenty of warmth and sunshine to come this week.

Lilacapples · 24/06/2024 19:37

24 degrees, hot and sunny all day today here on the south coast 😁

MsLuxLisbon · 24/06/2024 20:04

I'm somewhat eating my words as it is absolutely gorgeous just now. Sunny, bright and clear. I am hoping that the forecast for tomorrow is a lie and that it will stay like this for a few days. I'm honestly not asking much, just for a sliver of sun on my skin. I think that the people who have been rubbing in how nice they have it are being unkind and I hope it pours on you while I'm basking in Barcelona, Nice, and Berlin (note, I'm not talking about the people who've said it nice but also wished me well. I'm talking about the gloaters)

I get that @SoundTheSirens, but I think British summers have always been a tad unpredictable! It feels like it’s only been in the last ten years or so that we’ve had the more extreme heatwaves as a regular thing. I certainly remember grey and rainy days in the summers of my childhood. We used to go camping as our annual family holiday, always in the UK. And there was often rain! Lots of family photos of the time show us all in our kagouls 😂

Agree that it was unusually cold this year until recently. But none of us can do a damned thing about it! I just think it’s worth trying to think more positively about things that you can’t change. Or just carry on feeling cross, it makes no difference to me either way.

Oh and also, climate change. A lot of people don’t seem to give a shit about that, but then hopefully they aren’t the same ones moaning about the weather. 😬

Greenlittecat · 24/06/2024 20:18

Have a great holiday! Make sure you make a post gloating about the weather and how much fun you had when you get back, I'm sure everyone gloating will absolutely support you 😂

Oh, I will, make no mistake! I am positive that after a few weeks of the crap that will undoubtedly be the next months, the people gloating will be just where I am today. I'll be sure to post pictures of my gorgeous golden skin and lots of holiday snaps! That'll larn 'em!

Erm you asked if you were unreasonable? I absolutely hate the heat for multiple reasons so I can't think of anything worse. It's been boiling here all day and I've had to spend it in laying on the bed with the curtains closed 🤣

Well you're in luck then, as it's sure to be miserable again in the next few days! You must have been ecstatic this last few months.

I have lung issues that means the heat puts me in hospital so yes! I have been ecstatic to be home thanks 😊

Come to Suffolk 😀 we have blue skies and its 23c! It's meant to be like this all week ...absolutely beautiful!

Sounds idyllic.

Lovely day where I live, not too far from the UK.

MsLuxLisbon · 24/06/2024 21:04

It is so lovely here this evening that I feel a real dolt for complaining! I can't believe that it will be grey tomorrow, I think that stupid app must be wrong. I have noticed that they've got a lot wrong recently, I really wish they'd up their game a bit.
