Waitrose incident.

I am not sure if I am being sensitive or if I should complain.

Every Sunday morning I go out for a coffee and read my book, then do the weekly shop without the children. I like to be back before midday so I can spend the rest of the time with my children, including 9 month old baby. We have every supermarket local to us, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, M&S, Asda, Tesco, and I always use the ‘scan and shop’ to make the shopping as quick and easy as possible. I’ve never had an issue until today in Waitrose. I’ve only used it a couple of times in Waitrose and never for a big shop.

After scanning my entire shop, strategically packing it so it’s easy to unload at home, I went to pay. When I beeped the scanner, it flagged up as needing to be checked. I thought that was fair enough, it happens sometimes, and I haven’t done a weekly shop in Waitrose before using the ‘scan and shop’ option. The worker came over and said she needed to rescan 30/58 items. I thought that was ridiculous, in every other shop they scan a random selection of a few items, not over half your shop. It seemed pointless to me to have even used the option in the first place, but I didn’t say anything and the worker started to empty shopping bags full to rescan items. This was taking ages, but I just stood patiently waiting for her to finish.

Then, she came across one that I apparently hadn’t scanned. I know I did, but it was a yellow sticker packet so I can only assume that it hadn’t registered properly. She repeatedly asked me if I had scanned it, and I repeatedly told her I had but it clearly hadn’t registered.

She told me she would need to rescan my entire shopping trolley, then took me over to a till, and I stood on the end whilst she unpacked every single one of my bags and scanned every item individually. It was completely unsubtle, in front of all of the other customers, and obvious that they were rescanning the entire shop in case I was attempting to steal things. I felt like an idiot and a thief. To make matters worse, I am a small business owner working with children, and had already bumped into several of my clients in the shop. I was absolutely mortified thinking that they may think I am a thief.

I was thoroughly embarrassed and teary eyed, and hastily shoved everything back into bags whilst the Waitrose worker apologised. Half of my shopping is crushed as I was shoving things back into the bags indiscriminately. I promptly paid and left but it has really upset me. By that point, I’d spent around 20 minutes having everything rescanned.

AIBU to think that if Waitrose are going to have a system that is open to abuse, they need to have a solution that doesn’t involve treating customers like thieves? I have never had an experience like this in any other store and whilst I realise they have to protect themselves from theft, surely this is not the correct way to go about. It’s not the Waitrose workers fault, it just seems like a very poor system and they shouldn’t offer ‘scan and shop’ if this is the way they treat customers.

My goodness, how dramatic. You crushed your shopping and cried because the worker was doing their job?

So, there's this thing called empathy... 🙄

How would you have felt in OP's shoes?

OP, I think that's disgusting of Waitrose given that it was their error. It could have been done more discreetly.

lemonmeringueno3 · 23/06/2024 16:11

Every time I go in Waitrose I see someone being rescanned. It's happened to me several times. I wouldn't see you and assume you were a shoplifter. And, to be fair, you did have at least one unscanned item.

BallaiLuimni · 23/06/2024 15:46

I'd expect them to manage the situation by having a service that isn't utterly shit.

You have nailed it, people are just putting up with shitty customer service from supermarkets.

TonTonMacoute · 23/06/2024 16:12

I do think the Waitrose rescan system is crap.

In the old Safeways if there was a notification for a rescan they just sent you to a normal checkout, which is much better - if annoying. Trying to do it in the limited space of the quick exit is an absolute pain.

However, I don't see why you felt mortified by it, everyone has been rescanned at some point.

BobnLen · 23/06/2024 16:14

What's having coffee, reading a book and a baby that wasn't there anything to do with it.

Choochoo21 · 23/06/2024 16:15

You are taking this way too personally.

I’ve had them scan a couple items, half my shop or my entire shop several times.
Its one of the ball aches of using self service but the majority of the time it’s quicker and so I’ll still use it.

I’m sorry you felt so embarrassed but I promise you that no one would have even raised an eyebrow at this.

If you don’t want this to happen again then just use a normal til as there’s no guarantee that this won’t happen again.

pandasorous · 23/06/2024 16:15

self scan is totally bullshit. It's made going for shopping a nightmare especially places like the big Tesco (they only usually have a couple of staffed tills open). Just a total pain. I do almost everything online for this reason. waitrose at least has more staffed tills but still not enough as they have reduced.

sorry you had a bad experience OP

itsmylife7 · 23/06/2024 16:16

Who's got the time to look at other people's shopping being rescanned, certainly not me.

The only time I'd look is if the person being rescanned was making a big fuss.

It's a chance you take when you use this type of system.

CordyD · 23/06/2024 16:17

Argh! This happened to me in Sainsburys. The lady scanned my Tesco wet wipes that I'd got out for my toddler to wipe her nose and just thrown into the trolley in haste and then we had to have the entire big weekly shop re-scanned.
I had a very bored and hungry toddler and had to repack all of my shopping on my own. Which personally I thought was poor customer service, maybe I should have complained.

So people havent got time to LOOK at other peoples shopping being rescanned but somehow magically have the time to actually HAVE their whole trolley load reacanned. Bit of a contradiction there

NecklessMumster · 23/06/2024 16:19

I get rescanned a lot, in waitrose, and twice in sainsbury's they've said I've missed something and then do the full rescan of shame. I'm sure I didn't but there's no point arguing. I'd love to know if the scanner can go wrong or if it really was my fault. I'm v paranoid in sainsbury's now and doublecheck everything, and hold my breath when I checkout. It adds a bit of excitement I suppose 😊

amicissimma · 23/06/2024 16:19

I'd much rather they rescanned on the spot than taking me to one of the traditional checkouts to rescan. On a Sunday they all have long queues, so I'd either have to wait or have the staff member bring me to the front of the queue which would be much more embarassing than just a routine scan at the self-scan till.

I don't think the system is at all shitty. You have the choice of queueing for ages and going through the traditional checkouts or self-scanning and risking the odd rescan. I don't really want to pay extra to cover the cost of the stuff that people didn't pay for because they knew they could get away with it.

BobnLen · 23/06/2024 16:21

If you have it delivered, you don't get any of this shit and the service is very good, much better than at the shop.

TerrysNeapolitan · 23/06/2024 16:21

I used to do scan & shop with Sainsbury's, I don't bother anymore because of this. What's funny is the last time it all got scanned - we had scanned something twice so would have over paid - so it works both ways.

WalkingonWheels · 23/06/2024 13:59

This. Also it’s the risk you take if you do scan and shop. It’s annoying yes but unfortunately people do abuse the system so they do the checks.

Strictlymad · 23/06/2024 16:24

You are being unreasonable, this is standard in all shops, quite often there’s issues with yellow stickers, if the sicker doesn’t fully cover the full price barcode you can the sticker the cashiers machine catch the full price, it flags a discrepancy and they rescan the lot. The 30/58 items is cuz your a new customer, it reduces as you shop more. It’s normal practice in all shops

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 23/06/2024 16:27

SensitiveSallySue · 23/06/2024 14:31

@Dominoeffecter I won’t be going back to Waitrose so there’s no issues there. 😂

I suspect they are glad of that 😂

PoppyCherryDog · 23/06/2024 16:28

SensitiveSallySue · 23/06/2024 14:12

I don’t blame the staff at all!!

It was obvious they were rescanning my shopping as a suspected thief, as they didn’t take me back through the checkout in a traditional way. I stood at the side of till whilst she manually took every item out of my bags and rescanned it.

My issue is, there should be a system whereby they can check the shopping without making the person feel embarrassed or look a thief. Why not just take a customer back through the traditional till rather than making them stand there whilst the worker manually unpacks each item and rescans it? It’s system I am complaining about.

If you don’t like the system then don’t use scan and shop… I don’t mind my shopping being checked so I use scan and shop. You clearly have a big issue with it so don’t use it

sleekcat · 23/06/2024 16:29

Those yellow stickers are notorious for not scanning, however the worker was only doing their job. I've done similar work and as a member of staff I would have said something along the lines of 'oh, it happens sometimes with those stickers,' so as to make the customer feel better about it. But because things like this happen all the time I seriously doubt any other customers thought you were a thief. I'm also pretty sure the staff member didn't think you were a thief, a lot of the time we know who is suspicious before they get to the check outs.
This is a system that is not fool proof and there are always going to be something that goes wrong or doesn't get paid for. I assume supermarket chains save money but having fewer staff members and so are prepared to accept the occasional loss.

HashtagShitShop · 23/06/2024 16:29

I had a full rescan scan once too.

It was because I'd scanned an item that was the last on the shelf and it looked a bit tatty but the deal was too good to leave it. Going round I found an end isle where they were also listed and put back the one I'd scanned and just put the other that was sealed in my bag because of already scanned it, it was the exact same item at the exact same price. Ir was a little something for my neighbour so I just swapped for the not ripped packaging so it looked better.

I got pulled for a qc scan and she scanned the item and because I hadn't scanned that exact one I got a full rescan and the lady apologised after but said they had to recheck. It is what it is, it doesn't need to be a big drama, especially when you know you did nothing wrong. It was you who crushed your shopping, you can't blame them for that. I feel for you, but they won't have thought about it again the second you left the building and wouldn't be thinking you're guilty after.

RosstopherGeller · 23/06/2024 16:29

I nearly always get checked in Sainsbury's, never missed an item but it's usually an big shop (family of 6), so I guess easier to hide items in? I hate using traditional checkouts and I avoid supermarkets that don't have scan shop

namechangiosa · 23/06/2024 16:30

These self scans are an utter pain. I get most of my shopping delivered but occasionally I go into Tesco for a few things or a top up shop. Three times I did the self scan, and Every Single Time an assistant had to rescan the whole shop - so I may as well have just waited at the till in the first place. So that's what I do now - they obviously don't trust me to do their job.

WGACA · 23/06/2024 16:31

Vote with your feet. You have a wide choice of supermarkets locally you said.

Arrange a click and collect. Read your book in a cafe for an hour or so then collect your shopping straightaway. Job done!

Blueblell · 23/06/2024 16:33

That is inconvenient but I wouldn’t take it personally. I also wouldn’t think that someone was a thief if they were having their shopping rescanned. I would just assume that something had gone wrong. Just chalk it up to experience. I do also get annoyed with all the anti-theft measures that make self scanning inconvenient. Ultimately the shops are taking a job from someone so if it is not also providing the customer with a quicker service then they shouldn’t do it at all.

WYorkshireRose · 23/06/2024 16:34

SensitiveSallySue · 23/06/2024 14:35

I did scan the item, there system didn’t register it because it was yellow sticker.

It was your job to notice that. You didn't, so as far as Waitrose are concerned, you were attempting to steal it. How they treated you was perfectly fine IMO 🤷‍♀️
