Are people actually insane?

Yesterday at my son's sports day a family brought an bully type dog onto the field in amongst the kids activities. Am I mad in thinking this is just twatish behaviour. Not all kids like dogs and they had it amongst everything, put me totally on edge.

I'm now at my daughters ballet class and sat in the wait room full of babies and toddlers and a dad has brought what I am sure is an XL bully in this room. It's tugging on the lead wanting to get off and is getting increasingly agitated.

What would you do? Are some people total fucking morons or aibu?

Are you referring to all 'bully breeds' or just the XLs?

The ones that own the bigger bully types. My brother owns one and he fits the stereotype perfectly. Its all about the dog. How ‘sweet’ he is. He jumps up at the kids, he’s knocked them over. He jumped up at me and I ended up with scratches all over my legs. He seems friendly enough but he’s a massive chunk of muscle. He literally looks like he’s on steroids (a bit like my brother 🙄). His jaw is massive and I shudder to think of the damage he could do if he wanted to. I dont go round there much because of it.

SanctusInDistress · 22/06/2024 12:34

The thing is these dog types are a status thing amongst some people, and if you’ve got nothing else to feel proud or confident about, then you get one of these types of dogs, that’s why they do it. These people bringing in these dogs to these events must have been trying to make themselves look better ‘look at me I’m a macho man’, when in reality they probably have a lot of angst and lack of confidence.

I somehow am relaxed around small dogs. But I'm sure they could cause a nasty bite. But this dog is muscular and huge. If it turned, someone would be dead in a minute.

if it’s an XL Bully legally it needs to be muzzled. I’m a dog owner but wouldn’t take my dog to either the activities you’re describing, not fun for the dog either I should think!

There will be lots of people gritting their teeth and getting on with it. Don't take lack of objection to mean that it was"positively received".

I wouldn’t complain outright myself, but would be seething inside. So true, my lack of objection doesn’t equal consent either.

I find it very hard to believe no one from the school or ballet class have said anything? Confused

This

LoftyTurtle · 22/06/2024 12:50

Unfortunately, owning an XL bully almost invariably goes hand in hand with being incredibly thick. Only someone incredibly stupid wouldn't A. Research the dog breed they're buying before buying one, B. Believe the actual proven lies that XL bully breeders spout (Nanny dog myth which was created by enthusiasts of dog fighters to try and sanitise their fighting dogs) C. Buy a dog that is, given its breed, essentially guaranteed to be either supporting dog fighting and/or puppy farms D. Not bother to understand or research basic fucking dog behaviour before buying a dog. "Oh he's just being protective of the baby, how cute!" No, that's resource guarding and you or your baby is 1 step away from being mauled

Anyone who buys an XL bully or believes they have the potential to be nice family pets are at best absolutely deluded, and at worst, absolute idiots

Tatiepot · 22/06/2024 12:58

Me and DS would love to get a dog at some point, but the way some people are with their dogs now - the whole furbaby can go anywhere never mind who it upsets thing - is really putting me off. I just don't want to be associated with that kind of behaviour just because I have a dog.

ilovesushi · 22/06/2024 13:02

People are mental. It is completely inappropriate to bring a dog into those situations. I love dogs, I love dog friendly places but some places need to be dog free.

mindutopia · 22/06/2024 13:07

It’s not insanity. It’s small dick energy.

SpicyMoth · 22/06/2024 13:11

YABU unless you also feel the same around German Shepherds, Dalmatians, Malinois, Huskies, Malamutes, Chow Chows, Boxers, Great Danes, Newfoundland's, English Mastiff's, the list goes on.

Yep I do. If I couldn't pick up a dog and throw it across the room if it was attacking me I don't want my children near it.

I would probably email the manager of the dance school re: dog waiting for toddlers to finish ballet. How awful.

Do this. Complain. Ballet is for kids not dogs. Dog can wait outside.

I'm surprised the dog was allowed at school. Complain to both saying that your inclined to take your child to another ballet class, you don't feel comfortable at school with dogs about.

At one of my boys private SEN schools you can take dogs in. Because the teachers bring the dogs to work. But if they are well behaved. If they started to bark tug etc they would be asked to leave. But this is independent school. I'm surprised state allow it tbh.

Huskies are lovely looking dogs but have also killed a baby a couple of years ago.

I agree. Huskies should NOT be kept as pets! The breed is utterly unsuitable for that purpose. I guess the puppies look cute and people don't look beyond that. Madness.

Would you genuinely have started this thread though if there had been a dalmatian at the sports day or a Greyhound at the ballet?

eggplant16 · 22/06/2024 13:18

Saw one of the XL Bullies the other day with a muzzle on. Obviously just had pups. Small children in the family.

Its awful.

Poor, poor things. Totally unsuitable choice.

I would just add that not all 'bull breeds' are born equal by the way. Staffordshire bull terriers and English bull terriers are not the same as an XL bullies which seem to have been almost man made and designed to be aggressive.
So I'd try and be a bit clearer about the type of dog you're talking about before making a complaint. Of course all dogs, regardless of breed, should be on a lead in public. There's also no need for any dog other than an assistance dog to be in a ballet class. But you can't just go around saying 'the dog was a powerful bull breed therefore it must be dangerous' - that's simply not the case.
I say this as someone who owns a bull breed but also hates XLs with a passion.

No, you're right, Staffordshire bull terriers aren't the same as an XL - they're worse because they're exempt from the Dangerous Dogs Act following pressure from breeders in 1997, despite being a type of pit bull. Following the staffy exemption, dog attacks surged by 76% in 10 years, as staffies became more and more popular as one of the few pit bull breeds without restrictions.

According to a parliament committee report from 2018, staffies are responsible for 43% of all dog attacks in the UK, and had by then caused 6 deaths. Since the report, at least 5 further Staffies or staffy cross dogs have been involved in fatal attacks.

IMO they should be banned, just like other pit bulls, XL etc. Not because of one single outlier event, but because they're by far the breed that is behind most dog attacks, and regularly cause fatalities.

I'm sure the owners of Fizz and Dotty that killed a baby boy in December 2018 thought they were cute and fluffy too...

Justnot · 22/06/2024 13:22

I was bitten by an off the lead huskie last year - he went for my dog and bit me 3 times in the process. Since then I have a bit of a panic every time I see anything apart from a small dog off the lead. If it even looks slightly like a bully I basically shit myself and run away. I am hyper alert when I walk my dog and find myself coming up with ridiculous plans to save me and my dog (jumping over a fence, throwing my dog over a fence etc) even if my head says it’s alright, my body panics, heart thumping like I’ve run up some stairs. I’ve run and hid in the park toilet from a big staff off the lead - who apparently is lovely but my body just says run.

The huskie dog bite in itself was not that bad, but the thought of what a bully type dog could do off the lead scares the shit out of me. I honestly worry more about dogs on my night time dog walk then I do strange men

Did you report it to the police? They had to be sterilised before the end of last year and it's a crime to let them breed.

Likewhatever · 22/06/2024 13:24

People are nuts about their dogs. They’re animals, they don’t need a holiday, they don’t need to accompany their owners to go shopping or eat out or anywhere else that isn’t a walk. World’s gone mad.

Over Easter I was in a local park to my mum’s house (a housing estate). We were all in the playground surrounded by a fence. A lady walked up with a young XL. She didn’t enter the park. The dog was not on a lead. She was on her phone and the dog was wondering almost pacing outside the fenced area. I called my husband who had gone back to my mum’s to use the toilet and said loudly there is an XL bully off lead here, don’t want down. The lady obviously heard me and walked over to the dog put it on its lead and she walked off. We waiting behind the fence , my husband did come down and then called us out once he could see the dog was gone.

we were all petrified. My brother in law how is a GP (he was back at the house and we had taken his kids out) said he hates parks as he has had so many kids in with complications from dog bites.

I think this is an extreme reaction to a dog who is behaving perfectly normally.

However I walked my puppy through the local park last week. We haven't been to many parks and she doesn't know many children, so partly to she has she was and work on training. She was on lead and it wasn't a busy time of day but there wered families around. Two groups of children wanted to come a stroke her. The older ones (4/5 upwards) perfectly fine and asked first but there was a tiny toddler who kept trying to follow and grab her. Dog was backing away. It made me very nervous as a scared dog is an unpredictable dog, but I was trying to gently hold this toddler back.

parkrun500club · 22/06/2024 13:29

No people are no insane. But it's a cult. We all have to worship on the cult of the Dog.

The Dog has to be allowed everywhere and if you don't like them, tough. If you scared you need to get help for your anxiety.

Heaven forbid that people get a Dog if they know how to look after it properly :(or are willing to learn) and train it so it can stay at home for a few hours.

Sossijiz · 22/06/2024 13:33

Setyoufree · 22/06/2024 11:05

What? So if a cafe says dogs welcome, and my well behaved dog lies under my table and minds her own business, you say I should have just left her at home?? 🤨

Yes, because if you can bring your dog in, other people will bring in their less well behaved dogs. And your dog might not carry on minding her own business if another dog comes in and decides to start a barking context.

FallingIsLearning · 22/06/2024 13:36

No, YANBU.

The only dog allowed in our school grounds is a therapy dog. Family pets are not permitted, regardless of breed.

Thinking of my daughter's dance school, I wouldn't bring a dog into the waiting area - it is packed, noisy and full of small people moving quickly and erratically, some of which are likely to want to interact with the dog with varying degrees of kindness and calmness.
