Cheeky to order room service or not?

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 19:54

I’m babysitting in a 5 star hotel (live abroad, I’m a teacher and babysitting on the side pays well)
Lovely family, just put baby down, the mum texted and said to make yourself comfortable etc and help myself to anything, but that as they’d just arrived, don’t have anything really and to feel free to order something to be sent up (assuming that would go on their bill?)
Been here since 6, will be here for 6 hours, should have brought some snacks really but was sorting out my own Dd before I left and no time to nip to the shop on the way,

I’m hungry, but that’s cheeky right?

Would you order or no?

Order and ask to pay on your own card?

GoneFishingToday · 21/06/2024 19:57

Presumably you have a contact number for the people you're babysitting for? Call and ask her if she minds you using room service, as other than that, if she doesn't have anything there, what else are you supposed to do?

tortiecat · 21/06/2024 19:57

The mum explicitly said to order something yes? Provided you're sensible and don't go for a twelve course banquet that sounds acceptable to me.

OldKingCole · 21/06/2024 19:58

She said to order something - so I don’t see why you are deliberating? I think it’s fine

Aquamarine1029 · 21/06/2024 19:58

The mum told you to order food, so order food. If you order the whole menu, then yes, that would be cheeky.

Stop being silly and order something to eat.

Tillslag · 21/06/2024 19:58

she literally said to order something. Obviously don't go crazy on caviar, but yes order room service.

PaminaMozart · 21/06/2024 19:59

But why are you hesitating, given that you were specifically told "to feel free to order something to be sent up"

Quornflakegirl · 21/06/2024 19:59

This sounds like my life, I too am teacher who babysits for very affluent families. I personally wouldn’t order room service. I’ve only ever made myself a cup of tea in the room.

You don't eat? How silly. You are watching their child and need to eat and obviously can't leave. I doubt these families expect you not to eat.

SquigglePigs · 21/06/2024 20:01

She told you to order something so you are absolutely fine to. I'd just go for something on the lower to mid price range. So a pizza or burger, not a steak.

CelesteCunningham · 21/06/2024 20:01

If the mum explicitly said to order something then I think you're fine. Don't pick anything crazy expensive if you want them to ask you back. Grin

I bring my own food, book and water. Unless I take the children down to the dining room for a meal, no I don’t.

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 20:02

But do you think they meant on their bill? I don’t have my card and only €15-20 in my wallet, that won’t be enough. Imagine if she meant for me to pay for myself 🙈how embarrassing

Bjorkdidit · 21/06/2024 20:03

If they're staying in a 5 star hotel and are paying you to babysit, the extra cost of room service is going to be fairly trivial. Plus they've said you can order something.

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 20:04

@Quornflakegirl I do feel weird about it, never had that option before. I brought my own water and there’s literally nothing here aside from baby snacks, not going to eat those 😂am hungry though

weareallqueens · 21/06/2024 20:04

Order something on their bill, say when they come home that you didn't have your card and will transfer money later, see what they say.

babbi · 21/06/2024 20:04

Of course she meant add to their room bill !
go ahead and order your dinner .

enjoy !

renthead · 21/06/2024 20:05

Of course she meant on their bill! I don't stay in 5 star hotels but I always feed my babysitters. I'd be mortified if they thought they had to spend their own money on food while looking after my children. OP, this amount is nothing for them.

Families always offer for me to order room service but I never have. Same with the mini bar.

ShouldhavebeencalledAppollo · 21/06/2024 20:09

She wouldn’t have said to order room service if she meant for you to pay for it yourself.

If you were paying for it yourself, it wouldn’t have been any of her business if you did or didn’t.

Why are you being so weirdly martyr-ish about this? Them providing/paying for food is part of your well-earned compensation, obviously. I have taken babysitters along on holiday, know many others who do, and covering food costs for the sitter, especially when they are on duty, is always part of the deal.

PicaK · 21/06/2024 20:11

She's told you you can. Don't order lobster but do order something. They sound nice.

Yes that is exactly what they meant, order on their bill.

Just order something to eat, they don't expect you to starve but nor do they expect you to order oysters, caviar and champagne, just be reasonable and sensible.

GrumpySock · 21/06/2024 20:11

Google the hotel. In some the room service is included. Check the menu. It might just have some food for choice but not the prices.

At not one point did I tell op not to, I was purely staring what I do. What an odd thing to get so worked up about.
