Cheeky to order room service or not?

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 19:54

I’m babysitting in a 5 star hotel (live abroad, I’m a teacher and babysitting on the side pays well)
Lovely family, just put baby down, the mum texted and said to make yourself comfortable etc and help myself to anything, but that as they’d just arrived, don’t have anything really and to feel free to order something to be sent up (assuming that would go on their bill?)
Been here since 6, will be here for 6 hours, should have brought some snacks really but was sorting out my own Dd before I left and no time to nip to the shop on the way,

I’m hungry, but that’s cheeky right?

Would you order or no?

We are this kind of family, and would absolutely mean that you should order a meal on room service and we would pay for it. She said “feel free to” - that means that they will cover it as they don’t have other food in for you.

Tillslag · 21/06/2024 20:12

yes I was the parent sending this message, I absolutely mean to put it on the bill.

S0livagant · 21/06/2024 20:13

I'd order something basic, not a treat meal.

5amClub · 21/06/2024 20:14

I know the snack preferences of my regular babysitters and make sure I have something appropriate in. If I told them I had no food in but to order takeaway I would mean I was paying.

Morningsiesta · 21/06/2024 20:14

Order a simple sandwich. That would be 100% respectable.

Aquamarine1029 · 21/06/2024 20:14

Quornflakegirl · 21/06/2024 20:12

At not one point did I tell op not to, I was purely staring what I do. What an odd thing to get so worked up about.

How odd to think I'm worked up.

Gulbekian · 21/06/2024 20:14

The mum said to order something if necessary, so go ahead. It's in no one's interests for you to fall over in a dead faint.

Just don't go mad, and mention it when you say goodnight to them so that they know to expect the charge and you don't put them in the position of querying it on departure.

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 20:14

Hmm so was looking in the drawers etc as can’t even find a menu/booklet thing that they always have in hotels 🤷🏻‍♀️has phones where there’s the button to contact reception. Just paranoid say the brought some food up (would only go for a toastie or something) and if they asked for my card or something, I know that doesn’t usually happen but knowing my luck it would 😅
Why are there no menu thingies

redmimi · 21/06/2024 20:15

I'm sure they meant to order on them, but I would do exactly what @weareallqueens suggested.

Bearbookagainandagain · 21/06/2024 20:16

She would not have suggested for you to order room service if she didn't meant they would pay. In the odd chances that she did, they can take the money off your pay for the evening, but that would be super weird.

On the other hand, I have never provided meals for the babysitters watching my kids, I always assumed they got their own food.

For goodness sake you just tell them to charge it to the room. You really are making mountains out of molehills here. Just phone reception say you want some food and take it from there.

FishPhoods · 21/06/2024 20:18

You're being so weird about this. Call reception and say you would like a room service menu and is it possible to order something and charge it to the room. Order something cheap if you're so worried.

AmelieTaylor · 21/06/2024 20:19

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 20:04

@Quornflakegirl I do feel weird about it, never had that option before. I brought my own water and there’s literally nothing here aside from baby snacks, not going to eat those 😂am hungry though

She said to 'help yourself, but there's nothing really there as they've just arrived so order something up'

its as plain as the nose in your face that she she meant on their bill!! Order something other than lobster/caviar & (obviously no alcohol).

it would have been cheeky to do it if she hadn't said so, but she did.

if she expected you to pay, she didn't need to 'permit' you to use room service!

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 20:19

With the babysitter for my Dd, I always leave drinks and snacks for them both and she only comes for 3-4 hours tops, she always eats it. I would never not leave her something

Pigeon66 · 21/06/2024 20:20

A lot of hotels put the room service menu on the Tv these days and you order through there.

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 20:20

@Pigeon66 Ohh that’s a point, going to look

PeloMom · 21/06/2024 20:22

We are a family that travels and gets Nannies sometimes- I’d fully expect to feed the nanny and pay for her food even if its 6 hrs

Just call reception fgs. You're scaring me! You're a teacher and you've been left in sole charge of a baby. This shouldn't be beyond you!!

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 20:22

@Pigeon66 Youre right! Ok so it’s on the tv, think I have to scan code to see menu…god how embarrassing, used to travel so much and stay in many hotels, haven’t really since having Dd

But do you think they meant on their bill? I don’t have my card and only €15-20 in my wallet, that won’t be enough. Imagine if she meant for me to pay for myself 🙈how embarrassing

Yes she means to just order something on the room if you are worried take it off your babysitting money. Just don't order the lobster 😃

PlacidPenelope · 21/06/2024 20:22

You arrived at 6, are going to be there for 6 hours they clearly expect you to need to eat in that timeframe and savvy enough to realise you are unlikely to have had your evening meal so they have told you to order room service.

Stop overthinking and making a drama out of it. You are not in someone's home where drinks and snacks would be left.

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 20:23

@AmelieTaylor Calm down. It’s not beyond me just don’t know if it’s cheeky

As we've said, it's not cheeky when she's told you to order food.

viques · 21/06/2024 20:24

If you were babysitting in their home they would have said help yourself to something from the fridge or the freezer. Just think of the hotel kitchen as their fridge away from home.

When the food comes the waiter will ask you to sign the docket, but won’t care who you are, they just need a signature.

MindatWork · 21/06/2024 20:24

@Itsanotherworldisntit but why would it be cheeky when she literally told you to order something? I don’t understand.
