Cheeky to order room service or not?

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 19:54

I’m babysitting in a 5 star hotel (live abroad, I’m a teacher and babysitting on the side pays well)
Lovely family, just put baby down, the mum texted and said to make yourself comfortable etc and help myself to anything, but that as they’d just arrived, don’t have anything really and to feel free to order something to be sent up (assuming that would go on their bill?)
Been here since 6, will be here for 6 hours, should have brought some snacks really but was sorting out my own Dd before I left and no time to nip to the shop on the way,

I’m hungry, but that’s cheeky right?

Would you order or no?

I stay in 5 star hotels, I know the average menu prices and that doesn't surprise me at all. So if I tell a babysitter to use room service, I mean to order a meal.

ditalini · 21/06/2024 20:52

It's a 5 star hotel. Can you imagine what they've paid for the room.

Op, this is silly - your sandwich is a drop in the ocean of all the other costs that They Are Clearly Happy To Pay.

RhiWrites · 21/06/2024 20:52

That’s an expected hotel charge. Order the sandwich.

StainlessSeal · 21/06/2024 20:52

@op then order yourself a club sandwich. That's not an unusual price for a 5* hotel.

User1974 · 21/06/2024 20:52

Order a reasonably priced meal and unclench! They are massively rich!

Florabelle · 21/06/2024 20:53

You are lovely but being ridiculous. They are staying in a 5 star 🌟 hotel and can afford to go out and hire a nanny. Stop looking at it through your own lens. They’d not bat an eyelid at 20 euros at all !!

Differentstarts · 21/06/2024 20:54

A club sandwich sounds amazing do you get chips with it

WaltzingWaters · 21/06/2024 20:56

If they’re like the family I used to work for they won’t even bat an eyelid at the cost of food there, it won’t even feature on their radar. I used to find it crazy that we’d be ordering 2 poached eggs for £50, then they’d order a £100 steak for me to blend up for the baby, knowing full well the baby never ate meat and it would go to waste.

She told you to order something, just don’t go crazy. It’s hard when you’re in a 5* joint and the prices are waaaay out of your league but there’s no alternative. Please don’t go hungry!

Boreoffwithyournakedpics · 21/06/2024 20:56

Please order it OP. I've had babysitters up to the hotel room, always tell them to do the same - I'd be honestly very upset at the thought of them worrying about getting some food because it's outside of their usual budget.

Windinmyhair · 21/06/2024 20:57

If you are worried suggest they can take it out of what they pay you at the end of the night. They can refuse and it will all be fine!

ChampagneLassie · 21/06/2024 20:57

You’re being daft. They told you to order. If you really need permission text them and say something like “are you sure it’s ok for me to order x it £x” and I’m sure they’ll reply of course! They choose hotel and babysitter, I’m sure this is not a big deal to them. I stay in expensive hotels and hire sitters, I want my babysitter to be comfortable and not hungry!

cestlavielife · 21/06/2024 20:58

Order a club sandwich

CheeseWisely · 21/06/2024 20:58

OP, with kindness, please unclench and order some food as you've been told to do!

I'm lucky enough to stay in 5 star hotels (mostly for work) regularly and anything up to €30 for a club sandwich is par for the course on room service. The family who are staying in 5 star and paying a babysitter so they can go out will not so much as flinch at it.

Miyagi99 · 21/06/2024 20:59

Order as you were told to but if you feel guilty you could order and pay for yourself or ask reception if you can order takeaway to the room.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/06/2024 20:59

Stop being so wet. They'll feel awkward asking you to babysit again if you don't act normally and eat when a person usually would, especially when they've told you to!

itsmeagainagain · 21/06/2024 21:00

just order takeaway and get it delivered to your room

RamonaRamirez · 21/06/2024 21:00

So what are you afraid might happen?

What is your worst case scenario?

And how would you deal with that if it happened? Could you handle it?

Why are you so anxious?

Angelou79 · 21/06/2024 21:00

Can you order takeaway to be delivered?

Decompressing2 · 21/06/2024 21:00

You could get a take away delivered to the hotel would be cheaper

Decompressing2 · 21/06/2024 21:03

I am guessing you are hesitating because she said make yourself comfortable rather than order room service.
i would order the cmub sandwich and when they got back day I forgot to bring dinner with me so I ordered a club sandwich it cost x - sorry just take it off my pay. They will hopefully say no problem it’s ok

Differentstarts · 21/06/2024 21:04

Don't do this they probably won't thank you if their room smells of mcdonalds

Itsanotherworldisntit · 21/06/2024 21:04

So if I order something do I tell them when they come home, seems so awkward, when would they receive the bill for it as I’m sitting next week too

OP posts:
WiddlinDiddlin · 21/06/2024 21:06

For the love of whatever woman will you order yourself a meal!

If you really are that concerned, then tell them when they come back 'I hope I didn't misunderstand you earlier, I ordered some food to the room and I can pay via bank transfer if it was too much'.

Sorted then whichever way.

Trust me, they booked this hotel, they know damn well how much room service costs and would not have told you to 'feel free' if they didn't expect to pay for it.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/06/2024 21:06

They'll get the bill when they check out. It'd be polite to let them know you took them up on their offer so you can thank them.

Well I wouldn't bother given that she literally told you to order something, but if you're going to stew on it all week then probably best for your own wellbeing.
