Or is there some and I’m missing it? I’ve been searching online for ages but not found anything.

Trigger In an effort not to discriminate - my weight gain is because of medical issues. Endocrine tumour, steroids, PCOS just to name a few. I lost lots of weight through starving myself to fit the norm & it piled on so any comments regarding weight please be mindful*

I broke a chair (the mesh type one) and basically feel mortified. My bum & ego are bruised 😂
I can’t go in direct sun/daylight, so the evenings myself & DC like to have supper and time outside whilst it’s cooler. I don’t want to have to stop that just because, well basically I’m fat.

Your issue may be medical but let’s be honest, that’s a small number of people who can use that reason. The majority are just fat because they eat too much and are sedentary. I think it’s dangerous to start shaping the world around severely overweight people.

SummerBarbecues · 21/06/2024 11:19

I am sure product designers are already designing things to accomodate the majority of their customers. I'm sure they have high weight limit than 50 years ago. I am short and I can tell you what a pain it is when supermarket put items on the top shelf. Or chairs are too high and my feet don't touch the ground.

MissMoneyFairy · 21/06/2024 11:20

Would something like a 2 seater be more comfortable, argos and wowcher have them

GasPanic · 21/06/2024 11:24

Outdoor furniture tends to be lightweight because it is moved around a lot.

If you were to reinforce it for heavier people then it would get very heavy and difficult to carry.

I think you just have to search online for some more robust furniture. I am sure it is possible to get. You may also find the more robust furniture is designed so it assists people getting up as well, as it cannot be easy getting up out of a lightweight chair for example.

SummerBarbecues · 21/06/2024 11:24

Also, are you sure it's your weight? DC1 broke a wooden garden chair last week. She's very light and skinny. DH and I both think it's because the wood has weakened over the years. Especially because they have been left outdoors all year round.

10speckledfrogs · 21/06/2024 11:26

We use proper wooden outdoor benches and chairs made of thick timber (not the cheapo ones that look like they are made out of thin wood) and a cable reel for a table, have you considered investing in some?

Ours have lasted 6 years so far no breakages and they are not treated delicately - not overweight ourselves but I'm pretty certain they would hold up to a very very large person.

Obviously can't be moved around or folded away, they pretty much stay where you put them.

I completely agree and a few years ago I was a normal BMI and then obviously I had that blip not eating.
I’m on complan shakes on prescription because I struggle to eat.
I do see your point though and understand it.

That’s a good idea!

I doubt there would be a market for it.
It would cost more as a niche product and most people don’t like to spend that much on their outdoor furniture.

You could just buy a two person bench and use that.

MidnightPatrol · 21/06/2024 11:27

I have a garden sofa which happily supports multiple people sitting on it.

Could you buy something geared towards seating more than one person?

Also - don’t feel too bad. Cheap chairs can be pretty flimsy.

AnneLovesGilbert · 21/06/2024 11:28

Get an outdoor corner sofa? Plenty of room in the corner to lounge comfortably. Plastic wicker or whatever most of them are made out of is pretty sturdy.

Fwiw people who are fat because they just eat too much also deserve safe comfy furniture, your disclaimer sounds a bit judgy.

I’m not too sure, it’s never happened before and sat on various sets outdoors already this year (I don’t think I will again!)

Just get a 2 seater bench or sofa and sit on it by yourself.

longdistanceclaraclara · 21/06/2024 11:28

I'm bored so just googled op, there is lots available online

MissMoneyFairy · 21/06/2024 11:29

Argos do a 2 seater rattan effect chair £39

Ah I’m so sorry I didn’t even think of that, I think I was just sensitive to comments I would get, I’ll try edit it now, thank you

Does it have to be light to move around? I'd suggest a nice wooden bench or two. If you're really concerned, I bet a joiner could make you one to your own specs. Something that you can add lovely box cushions too, with memory foam inners. Easy to take off when not in use.

I have been for ages but not two seater, I’m probably away with the fairies!

We have a load of the metal bistro chairs similar to this
Aluminium Bistro Arm Chair (Minimum 4) | BiGDUG

They will pretty much hold anything

Yeah these don't work for fatties because the arms cut into your legs, as a fatties, I avoid these like the plague

MigGirl · 21/06/2024 11:34

I'm sure you can, my SIL is very (how shallnI put this) obese. The IL'S have to buy special furniture to fit her very large frame. FIL has mentioned this in the past, that she has broken chairs. She even brings her own when they come to our house 🙈. So they must exist.

To be honest I feel like I'm getting a bit like that myself but like you OP it's due to medical issues I've had recently, not like my SIL you just eats half a cake at a time 😳.

So what?

Op...you shouldn't have had to justify or explain your reasons for being plus size.

It's irrelevant

VolvoFan · 21/06/2024 11:42

I'm sorry about your medical issues, but the vast majority of people are overweight due to poor lifestyle choices. People weren't this big 30 years ago, people are eating too much and exercising much less than they used to. Corner cases such as yours do not warrant the world to adapt, otherwise it just gets normalised.

This is really unnecessary.

The op isn't responsible for the worlds obesity problem.

There is a lot of scientific research around UPF causing weight gain rather than people just overeating. There are a lot of complex reasons for people eating more UPF foods. It is more complex than people eating too much.
