Or is there some and I’m missing it? I’ve been searching online for ages but not found anything.

Trigger In an effort not to discriminate - my weight gain is because of medical issues. Endocrine tumour, steroids, PCOS just to name a few. I lost lots of weight through starving myself to fit the norm & it piled on so any comments regarding weight please be mindful*

I broke a chair (the mesh type one) and basically feel mortified. My bum & ego are bruised 😂
I can’t go in direct sun/daylight, so the evenings myself & DC like to have supper and time outside whilst it’s cooler. I don’t want to have to stop that just because, well basically I’m fat.

Your issue may be medical but let’s be honest, that’s a small number of people who can use that reason. The majority are just fat because they eat too much and are sedentary. I think it’s dangerous to start shaping the world around severely overweight people.

I don't really agree with this. Yes it's about eating more, but before I went on medication it would have been impossible for me to get fat, I couldn't do it if I tried

Mabelface · 21/06/2024 19:15

Bloody hell, there's some right nasty people on here!

JaceLancs · 21/06/2024 19:17

We are a fairly sturdy family although trying to be less so!
ikea aluminium garden furniture is amazing - bought a set in first Covid lock down still looks brand new

Shizzlestix · 21/06/2024 19:24

We have mesh folding chairs, they’re quite big and never quailed under my nearly 24st, (lots less now) had them years. They were from Homebase. Alternatively, nice wooden bench? Stick cushions on top for comfort.

You know PCOS doesn’t cause weight gain? They go hand in hand, both caused by the same root cause = insulin resistance.

PCOS is known as type 4 diabetes (type 3 being dementia).

Get yourself low carb and save your money on what would no doubt be a massively overpriced piece of furniture!

What about my endocrine tumour that regulates many of my body functions? Having to live with not being in control of simple things.
Can you even imagine what it’s like to gain weight even though I count my calories? All whilst trying not to go back to starving myself.
Many medics involved in my care talk about my weight gain. I’ve many other conditions too.
The looks of disgust & comments I get from people make me so insecure.

Even if it wasn’t caused by that, there’s many reasons people are overweight such as trauma, mental health. Just because someone is outside the normal BMI they shouldn’t be berated.

I genuinely applaud those who can keep their weight under control and envy them secretly.
But please be mindful. I’d like to think humans treat each other equally!

Thank you for your responses all.

Sorry I haven’t managed to reply individually to everyone.
I seem to bite at the negative ones, whilst I should be thanking the positive ones.
We all deserve furniture regardless of weight or circumstances- thank you for those who’ve spoke up about that.
I’m not one for conflict tbh and going to ignore judgy comments going forward.

Apologies to anyone this has upset, it wasn’t my intention.

I have a la fuma XL chair, have had it 10 years and recently replaced just the seat bit. It stays outside all year and is is fab condition.
Expensive but well worth it.
I am size 24

If not look at a lovely chunky wooden bench.

Totally genuine question. Do the hormones, steroids etc. make you put on weight directly (e.g. by signalling your body to store more food as fat), or do they hugely increases one's appetite to a point that almost no one would be able to avoid eating more?

I can’t explain it, so the steroids generally make patients feel more hungry, but also can create something called “moon face”.
The moon face is very noticeable on me. It’s become really round (& chins!)

Typically someone “healthy” on my diet etc would lose weight quicker & vastly more, but my metabolism is very low.

I don’t know too much about it all as weight is a sensitive topic due to my past issues with food so it’s not something really talked about at my appointments, I’m just reassured really that it’s nothing that I’m doing. I do food diaries etc and it effects me emotionally.
It is something on my list to look into when things settle.

Thank you for asking, it’s refreshing that someone wants to know the reasoning. I apologise I don’t have more knowledge about it but another poster may do :)

(* I hope others don’t see this as me bashing overweight people who don’t have medical issues, I empathise either way as I know and feel the stigma)

Only 2 posts setting out some actual recommendations

I used to be 20 stone (more actually) and Ive lost 10 stone. Thats with an underactive thyroid and PCOS.

However my biggest fear when big was furniture, so I did months of tedious research before buying anything.

So as someone has mentioned, Lafuma do XL funiture. This is what we now have, its too big for me now and do be aware it is quite big and heavy.

Look for things that have a weight limit of 125kg or 150kg, most garden furniture, home furniture, bikes even have weight limits of 100kg, sometimes less!

Its not just the weight limit, its also the width, as others have said your legs and arms cut in, if they're too narrow.

Anything wooden would be strong and sturdy but the disadvantage is that you cant fold away easily/cover easily/move round the garden easily.

Do some googling OP and you will find what you need, although its more expensive too

Check these out, I remember seeing them in IKEA and they looked pretty large. The measurements say they are good up to 110kg

Hi @ThemysteriousH I'm plus size myself. Basically a poor diet after my mum died suddenly. Didn't look after my self. Used food as a comfort. So for my entire 20s I've been 19/20 stone. I get paranoid about furniture holding my weight. Had quite a few near misses!
I've got some lovely garden furniture from a shop called jysk. It holds my weight and is good to be kept outside. Had it for over 7 years no issues and still looks good. Thankfully since becoming a mum myself my weight has gone down to 16 stone mark. Still overweight but feeling better than I was.
Hope you can find something suitable.

Hi!

Bless you, it’s horrible we have to feel we need to explain the reason for being plus size in this day and age 🥺 especially on a forum predominantly women.

I will check that out now! Thank you so much ☺️

I posted recommendations too but the OP didn't reply!
She also hasn't clarified what she means by 'garden furniture' whether it needs to be foldable, can be left outside, also budget. And what exactly she's been Googling. But she;s replied to all the mean comments...

Ignore all these pricks OP and let's return to actual garden furniture

I’m so so so sorry. I got too hyper focused on the mean ones, which I shouldn’t have!

So looking for a chair that is easy to assemble and lightweight. I’ve got the an ikea one and camping one posted on here.

Also looking on Facebook marketplace for some kind of wicker (can’t remember the word!) as I’d be useless at assembling.

Apologies again, I’ve found your comment and it was really helpful :)

It's dangerous for overweight people to have accidents on furniture that doesn't fit

I'm sure you can find some op?

This made me smile. I'm 5ft 6" but I find that a particular product at M&S that I buy every time I go but it's just that bit too high for me to reach. My solution was to go to the shelf with rolls of foil/baking paper on it, get on, go back to the product, use the roll to flick that off for me to catch - and replace kitchen foil as I go round the shop.

The last time I went I saw that this product had been moved to a shelf lower. Perhaps they saw and took pity on me? Either way, I wish they done it years ago.

I’m 4’11 and past tactics I’ve used have included standing on a lower shelf, borrowing a stool from a different aisle & pulling the plastic edging off the top shelf because sometimes that’s all it takes to make something reachable. The foil box is a good thought, I’ll try it!

I have under active thyroid and PCOS and have lost 6 stone.

Do it. You'll feel so much better.

The chair wasn't the problem...

CocoapuffPuff · 24/06/2024 09:36

I got a beautiful wooden bench at our local garden centre. Yes, it was £180 but it's comfy and has lovely flat wide armrests that can comfortably hold a mug of tea (garden essential).
Do you need furniture that can be moved, or will a bench work? We only have one place to put ours so the weight of the thing didn't matter, it's staying put.

TheArtfulWriter · 24/06/2024 09:37

There are foldable benches for up to 150KG - I tried posting but link keeps getting messed up

TheArtfulWriter · 24/06/2024 09:40

Also I'm not sure if anything light weight other than metal will be safe - they ones I've tried are flimsy.
If space is an issue, you can get a folding chair that you pack away and put a cover over, so it can be left outdoors

Did you miss that pcos is not the only issue for the op?

OrlandointheWilderness · 24/06/2024 09:51

God there are some horrible comments here. I'm fat, 20 stone. I tried bloody hard not to be, my whole life is an endless roundabout of feeling ugly/worthless/hungry at the moment. Being fat is miserable. Then you come on MN and some of the comments are just designed to make you worse!

There is furniture out there OP, it just takes some finding.

This is awful.

Have you read any of my comments?
I can post my full medical history, medications etc if that helps?

It’s disgusting I have to even comment on my own weight. Regardless of health, even if I were to lose weight (which I’m bloody trying!), do you think I’d be able to do it rapidly enough to buy furniture now for this summer? It would be a miracle.
its not only offensive to me but many others!

Thank you those who gave genuinely helpful comments. I’ve got some ordered and coming this week for FAT me 😊

Hope this thread hasn’t upset anyone else.

Shame my trigger warning was ignored.
Luckily I’m not in a mindset of starving myself again..!
