Or is there some and I’m missing it? I’ve been searching online for ages but not found anything.

Trigger In an effort not to discriminate - my weight gain is because of medical issues. Endocrine tumour, steroids, PCOS just to name a few. I lost lots of weight through starving myself to fit the norm & it piled on so any comments regarding weight please be mindful*

I broke a chair (the mesh type one) and basically feel mortified. My bum & ego are bruised 😂
I can’t go in direct sun/daylight, so the evenings myself & DC like to have supper and time outside whilst it’s cooler. I don’t want to have to stop that just because, well basically I’m fat.

It may not be precisely what you had in mind, but I suggest you try a Google or amazon search for a heavy duty camping chair.

I'm size 24/26, and i have a carvapet one I bought for camping, but use in the garden as well , as its amazingly comfortable, and feels totally secure.

Someone even said I looked elegant sitting in it!

Your issue may be medical but let’s be honest, that’s a small number of people who can use that reason. The majority are just fat because they eat too much and are sedentary. I think it’s dangerous to start shaping the world around severely overweight people.

What a bonkers comment. Whatever the reason (and surely we are all aware it’s a complex issue), it you’re fat you still want to sit down!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 21/06/2024 11:59

Yes there should be furniture to accommodate larger people. Everybody needs to sit and excluding people by dint of their weight isn't right.

Market forces will drive this, if there is enough demand then the furniture will be made and sold; I can imagine a high demand for it.

I'm not getting into the bollocks of diet chat that's already started on this thread, it's utterly irrelevant however much posters here love to wang on and on about it. People need clothes to fit them and chairs suitable to sit on. Their bodies are their own business and this really isn't rocket science.

I hope your condition is brought under control, OP, sounds miserable for you.

shearwater2 · 21/06/2024 11:59

I imagine there is a market for it, and if there is, it will happen.

I'm sorry about your medical issues, but the vast majority of people are overweight due to poor lifestyle choices. People weren't this big 30 years ago, people are eating too much and exercising much less than they used to. Corner cases such as yours do not warrant the world to adapt, otherwise it just gets normalised.

I find comments like this bonkers. The world absolutely can and will adapt to people being bigger, and already has in many ways. It's just a fact of life now that 66% of adults are overweight and no amount of bitter judgey pants remarks to try and make you feel better about your own failings as a human being will change that.

sprigatito · 21/06/2024 12:01

As showcased on this thread, a lot of people think fat people deserve to be humiliated and hurt by crashing through furniture, because it serves them right for being greedy. Making furniture to accommodate them spoils the fun.

My advice is to go and try some chairs out in actual shops - we got a lovely study table and chairs from Homebase years ago and its still in great condition - I am 22 stone for reference.

sharpspade · 21/06/2024 12:04

Buy a properly made wooden bench, and get comfy cushions for it. The sort of bench you see in parks. They get a lot of use and seem to last years with regular painting or varnishing.

No one is asking the world to adapt, it's checking that the capitalist society we live in provides chairs for larger folks. Spoiler - they do!

What loss is it to you? None. Wind your bloody neck in.

CrotchetyQuaver · 21/06/2024 12:05

I think if you choose carefully you might be ok. I would look for a good quality metal chair with some weight to it which should mean it's got the extra strength you need it to have. Then a seat cushion for comfort. You probably need to see it in person rather than trust the internet photos.

Looking at my Kettler set, the plastic wickerwork is stronger than it looks, one of my DD is a big girl, I don't know how heavy but she must be 100kg plus. It's coped fine with her. But that was expensive at over £2k, depends on your budget really.

Kittea · 21/06/2024 12:07

You know PCOS doesn’t cause weight gain? They go hand in hand, both caused by the same root cause = insulin resistance.

PCOS is known as type 4 diabetes (type 3 being dementia).

Get yourself low carb and save your money on what would no doubt be a massively overpriced piece of furniture!

Comedycook · 21/06/2024 12:07

I have seen really quite robust garden furniture...looks more like furniture for indoors often but is actually garden furniture. It's usually pretty expensive like most things which are better quality. I think the cheapo rattan sets are generally more flimsy feeling

TheArtfulWriter · 21/06/2024 12:13

Items marketed as 'outdoor furniture' are often light, for putting away. And the cheap ones can be quite flimsy! Given our shitty weather they're not build robustly for constant use.

YABU to expect 'plus sized' furniture with these features. Any reinforcement will make them heavier.

There are loads of other options. Sofas, heavier furniture that isn't 'outdoor' , but with a protective cover.

There are also custom furniture makers who can build to order.

The issue probably isn't your weight but money.

Porridgeislife · 21/06/2024 12:15

Please don’t feel you have to justify why you’re living with obesity. The reasons are complex and very rarely due just personal lifestyle choices.

I think if you spent a bit more on a high quality furniture like Maze you would be okay. Outdoor furniture is usually a bit more generously sized, at least ours is.

You probably need to go in store to sit on the chairs and make sure you’ve got space and they feel sturdy. Every deserves comfy seating in their own home.

RandomUsernameHere · 21/06/2024 12:16

I'd go for a good quality wooden bench. Don't feel bad about the broken chair, furniture left outside can degrade so it becomes really weak, it may well have broken regardless of your weight.

Just because it worked for YOU doesn’t mean it works for EVERYONE.

This lady is also struggling with a lot more on the endocrine side than “just” PCOS.

TheArtfulWriter · 21/06/2024 12:22

Also OP - if money is an issue, depending on where you live, lots of people move and sell quality furniture for a low price. Look on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree , Freecycle etc.

Current on FB marketplace within 30 miles of me there's a lot of garden benches, ex-pub furniture, and metal chairs.

SummerBarbecues · 21/06/2024 11:19

I am sure product designers are already designing things to accomodate the majority of their customers. I'm sure they have high weight limit than 50 years ago. I am short and I can tell you what a pain it is when supermarket put items on the top shelf. Or chairs are too high and my feet don't touch the ground.

This made me smile. I'm 5ft 6" but I find that a particular product at M&S that I buy every time I go but it's just that bit too high for me to reach. My solution was to go to the shelf with rolls of foil/baking paper on it, get on, go back to the product, use the roll to flick that off for me to catch - and replace kitchen foil as I go round the shop.

The last time I went I saw that this product had been moved to a shelf lower. Perhaps they saw and took pity on me? Either way, I wish they done it years ago.

Disturbia81 · 21/06/2024 12:28

I'm out and about a lot and I see lots of things that need to be made bigger to fit the modern population but I doubt they ever will be. Biggest one is bus seats. I see many people take up 1.5 seats and the other person is half in the aisle. Getting through the aisle on a full bus takes a lot of careful stepping around people.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 21/06/2024 12:32

ThemysteriousH · 21/06/2024 11:26

I completely agree and a few years ago I was a normal BMI and then obviously I had that blip not eating.
I’m on complan shakes on prescription because I struggle to eat.
I do see your point though and understand it.

Please don't feel that you need to validate the overly simple but objectionable views of some really lacking posters. Just as they feel that overweight people shouldn't be accommodated, I feel that morons shouldn't either.

I often think they're current or previous 'fatties' given the fury and vigour of their frankly silly witterings? Who knows? Who cares? You owe no explanation to anybody, OP.

Cluborange666 · 21/06/2024 12:33

Jeeze, as a fellow fatty, not reading these comments is self care (some at least).

The woman asked about chairs, not diets, not pompous condemnation, chairs… Op I reckon plus size anything probably has a market (for here and the US anyway). Probably an online business opportunity. Equally, as more people buy Chinese products, I find the fit of all cheaper goods are not suitable for ‘traditionally built’ ladies like myself.

Btw, for the benefit of the ‘just eat less’ crowd, PCOS means you can starve and still be obese. It’s not as simple as overeating.

Yes, fat people should just stand, or sit on the floor. Why should they be able to use furniture like other people?

Some astonishing comments on here, OP is asking for a chair she can sit in, not for the world to ‘reshape’ itself! Looking at you too @Badassnameforadojo

OP’s very understandable disclaimer about the weight gain being due to multiple medical conditions is then criticised for being ‘judgy’

@ThemysteriousH , I hope you find something comfortable and have some lovely time sitting out over the summer

Thank you so much, I’ve stepped away from the thread due to the comments. I appreciate this 🫶🏼
